Remember the Ka-Bar USMC we tested? Big fail... It bend and it broke... In our opinion a soldiers knife shouldn't just be for self protection. You need to be able to depend your life on it. So we tested the Extrema Ratio AMF and put it through hell.... Can you depend your life on this knife? Is this the Knife you should have gotten from your stingy country where you put your life for on the line? Find out in todays episode!

I spent 29 years and 10 months in the US Army. I never got issued anything but an M9 bayonet. They treated those like firearms and took them back and locked them in the arms room when we got back from the field. We were discouraged from carrying “Rambo” knives. I had Korean customs seize a Cold Steel Kobun I tried to bring into South Korea with my military equipment. Mostly we carried small folding knives. I knew of some people who actually got issued the Benchmade AFO automatic knife in Bosnia. I mostly carried cheap pocket knives I wasn’t afraid to lose, or a Spyderco Delica 4. I primarily used a knife for opening MREs, cutting 550 cord, and opening boxes and packages. I never had occasion to baton wood or stab anyone the whole time I was in the US Army. I did need to cut foliage to camouflage fighting positions and sometimes used a machete for that, but honestly the ideal tool for that task was small handheld pruning shears.

@@EireGenX I think the Benchmade AFO had a National Stock Number, meaning it could be procured through the supply system. I have one I bought but I don’t like it because it’s too heavy and it’s half serrated. I hate serrated knives. Plus it cost $200 so if I lost it in the field I’d cry. A Dollar Tree pocket knife will open MREs and cut paracord just as well and if I lose it I’m only out $1.25. Seriously, Walmart was selling some excellent folding knives a few years ago (Ozark Trails) for $3.88. There are several KZbin videos about them.

If I were packing my bags to go to war right now, I’d pack a Cold Steel Kobun or Tanto Lite, and a couple of Spyderco Delica 4s. But the U.S Army doesn't issue knives typically. I always had to buy my own. Pilots may be different, but people on the ground usually only get a bayonet and then they take them away mid tour. I bought a Benchmade Nimravus tanto and it did good opening MRE's, scraping dirt out from under my fingernails, carving some stuff, cutting 550 cord, shaving some arm hair off to see if my sharpening skills were still good. My pocket knife got far more use and I didn't stab anyone with it either. Used a lighter to build fires. I did eventually learn that different blade steels work better or worse with fire starters. I had one on me, but the lighter was more convenient. Just kept extras in sandwich bags. -Former Scout.

I do know that he was often asked to produce the green beret and the Pacific without serrations but would always refuse for whatever reason. So to a hardcore collector I'm not sure these newer models have the same sort of prestige that the older ones have.

The American Soldiers don't need a knife, because we have other thing to take out our enemy's, just because it's a issue knife, doesn't mean they carry that one, because the soldier can carry any knife he wants to in the field.

Looks good. The only downfall of it for me is that bolt loosening. Ideally you don’t want bits of the knife to be able to come off at some point when you’re out in the field.

as a member of the military one thing you have to keep in mind , kit gets left behind - crash moves , someone else moves your kit, your kit gets run over by a vehicle .... Because of that I have a hard limit of $50 for a field knife . And yes we mostly use them as tools because thats what knives are for if you want to kill you use a gun ! I normally use a mora

I dont think the combat aspect of a knife is ever regarded as primary. It's kind of a no ammo back against the wall type of thing. Obviously anyone would sooner use a gun but what if you can't for whatever reason?

@@mrdarren1045 I men I might also use a 6-foot picket , a sohval , machete ,helmet , hammer , axe or whatever comes to hand . At the point can not use the gun then its whatever I can use to get a new gun

Well….soldiers don’t use KaBars, Marines do. Even in the Marines the Kabar is no longer an issued knife. We usually brought our own knifes, I had a Gerber LMF. The best knife? A combo set…stainless steel leatherman or Gerber multipurpose pliers and tools!

Original desing Gerber BMF (Basic Multi Funtion) steel 440A. Serrated (8') and non-serrated (9') version. Gerber LMF (Lightweight Multi Funtion) steel 420HC 56HRC ("soft" low retention but easy sharpen), serrated and non-serrated version. 420A and 420HC, selected for mass production process. Gerber LMF II, steel Sandvik 12C27.

440A is not a bad stainless steel at all, it keeps an edge pretty good and can be field sharpened. It's just not the latest and greatest, that would be magnacut.

Nice one. It looks almost exaclty like the Gerber BMF from the 1980s 1990s. BLade shape, the pomel, even the holes in the blade guard. Also the sheath is similar. I think the old Gerber BMF looks better with it´s black handle. In case you like the Extrema Ratio AMF also take a look at the Gerber BMF.

The Ontario sp1 and sp6 are pretty tough. They have a encased full tang. They're different versions of the kabar and the current issue marine bayonet.

Damn! I forgot that I wanted to send you guys some American white oak to see how it compares on wearing your blades. At the time I had shipping worked out and everything, and could totally afford it. Unfortunately, I cannot even remotely afford it today. Bummer. Oh well. I'm totally jealous of the knife, fwiw. Nice review ^_^

Also, you'll get better performance if you pitch the edge back to make it a real cutter. That edge you are polishing is just for shipping, it's beveled like an axe head, so it will only get somewhat sharp. File it back about 8-10mm, and it will be razor sharp. Very hard to do with softer stainless, because it deforms. Maybe that 58roc will take it.

I was infantry for 6 years and I was never issued any "knife". I was issued a bayonet when I signed out my rifle from the arms room. Bayonets are not sharp and aren't supposed to be used for anything other than a mounted combat stabbing option. All the "knives" I had I bought myself. Pocket knives because fixed blades were not allowed to be worn (uniformity purpose).

As American I agree the k bar ,that k bar has extremely weak tang its way to thin ,if it had actual full size tang it would be a decent knife.

If the tang was long enough to taper down & tread it. Would make for a stronger join. And shape the finger stop at the back to fit more comfortable. Only things I'd change.

Your “I’m an American soldier and I’m completely fucked” statement is true . We hate it, they buy it. Most essential gear for warfare I bought myself to replace whatever they gave. Sucks but how it is. Still won.
