The "our fire is red, their fire is green" is indeed historically accurate. Those are tracer rounds. Placed every few rounds in the ammo boxes of the belt-fed machine guns. Gives everyone a point of reference during sustained fire. If I'm not mistaken, these colors were more or less agreed to during talks between the US and Germany. Neither side wanted to be shooting their own soldiers amongst the chaos.

Yes, it’s a small bit of phosphorus at the base of the bullet that ignited when fired, usually every 5th round is a tracer. So for every tracer you see there are 4 bullets you can’t.

The Germans were not known for tracers. Only Russsia, England and the US used them...they were mostly white and red.

@@GatorNick Well I've seen the green tracers from German forces portrayed in several different movies and games about WW2. And I swear I remember reading about it. But I also think that by the t8ne we were pushing into Germany, they were going bankrupt, their resources depleted, etc. So it's very likely they would not have been spending extra money and resources on something like this anymore. And I'm sure a lot of it would depend on how close you are to the main hubs in the supply chains as well, or how important your unit was in the grand scheme.
@robertbrunner4379

It's not because of that but due to the stuff they had to make them as we used phosphorus which burned whitish red and while germany used a element that burned green for there tracers

To understand the dinner table scene you've got to understand that their psyches are hanging on by a thread. War has ploughed out their humanity and they are still raw from the loss of their battle brother, as well as still processing the horrors and violence they themselves have had to endure and inflict. I believe they feel betrayed by their captain, betrayed that it wasn't them that got invited, that they weren't welcome, that he took the new guy instead, even after everything they've been through together. The captain wants to just forget it for a small moment and knows he can't with them around. He needs it. But they can't forget it. It's killing them inside, and it's spilling over in this scene. The captain wanted to steal some normality, a make-believe family dinner, just to breath one breath of relief. They walk in and find out they are not considered part of that family. And that's the strange tension and conflict that erupts. It probably would have happened somewhere else if not here. The truth though is that they are the ones who are probably right: there is no relief to be had, and you can't pretend there is. There wont be any relief, even after the war ends. It's just death upon death.

Those 'lasers' are tracer bullets, coated with phosphorous/magnesium so they shine bright. It allows for the person shooting to adjust their fire and see where their bullets are going. The downside is it allows the enemy to see where you're shooting from

I think the reason why Grady was so mean when he found out Norman slept with Emma is because he's jealous. Not just by the rejection, but because he doesn't have any innocence left, Emma likes Norman, but is terrified of Grady, that really confronts him with how much the war has changed him. On top of that, he felt betrayed by his captain whom he's known for a very long time. That's why he couldn't stand Norman at that moment. 28:50

A lot of people do not realize this, but this entire movie is all within one day. The beginning of the movie is morning and the end of the movie when Norman is rescued is the next morning. This puts into perspective of the daily tragedies that happened throughout the war and makes you a little more empathetic to the "A-Holes" in the movie such as Grady.

Tanks were usually classified light, medium, heavy, and super heavy based on the main cannon. The Sherman tank's main cannon was the lightest and smallest a medium tank could have, and it's armor, speed, and range was like that of a light tank.

I'll answer some of your questions. I'll have to ignore the ones related to story because I just don't have the knowledge to be accurate. Trust me, I've been inside one of those tank models and they're tight as a japanese subway (Full nerd: "Sherman M4A2E8"). They build a "set tank" to shoot the inside footage. The "mini bazooka" is referred generally as a panzerfaust. They were pretty effective when used on the side of a tank, as you saw. The assistant driver (AKA Bow Gunner) was supposed to quickly snap-shot people with panzerfausts or put enough bullets to deny them the window shoot (unless they wanted a quick way to take a dirt nap). A canteen is just a glorified metal water bottle. Lots of different makes and models through different armies. You would think the tracers are some sort of storytelling device but no. Those are the correct colors of the tracers used by american and german forces alike. About being desensitized, although I can't speak for killing, I can speak from the sense of humor: Dark, obscene, twisted, grotesque and dark (did I say dark already?). You get the picture. Ah! The "invincible" panzer. It's just a Tiger I tank. Plot armor, that's why. Although the Tiger could easily punch through a Sherman's armor, the one commanded by Brad Pitt had a gun that could punch through the Tiger armor as well. "The .50" is just a heavy machine gun. Fires a 50 caliber bullet (12.7x99mm). Depending on who you ask it was an excellent/overkill size bullet to kill infantry. They're also a lot of fun to shoot. I think those are all the techie questions you had. Very nice video, enjoyed it very much.

"Although the Tiger could easily punch through a Sherman's armor, the one commanded by Brad Pitt had a gun that could punch through the Tiger armor as well." Exactly. Fury had a 76mm gun. It could have defeated the Tiger's armor in many places, not just the rear. But it made for a great, edge-of-your-seat scene.

Good reaction. The last battle in the movie is "Inspired" by a real battle fought by the most decorated US soldier in Europe, Audie Murphy. In his case, he single handedly faught 200-300 men using a .50 caliber (i.e. the big machine gun on top of the tank Brad Pitt used at the end.) The main difference is Murphy couldn't go inside of the tank destroyer because it had already been hit and was burning. Also Murphy successfully fought off the attacking Germans. After the war Audie became a movie star, even playing himself in a biopic. Sadly, he suffered from PTSD, which probably lead to his alcohol problem.

And the battle with the Tiger was probably part inspired by the lone Tigers the Americans and British encountered in April 1945 in north central Germany, around places like Hannover and Paderborn. The Germans threw in last minute ad hoc units with Tigers, or a single Tiger, which were previously in training schools. The US 2nd Armored Division encountered a lone Tiger I from Gruppe Fehrmann on 11th April 1945 near Achum (around 40 miles west of Hannover). This lone Tiger knocked out 3 Shermans and a scout car before withdrawing. Despite taking hits none of them knocked out the Tiger. The Tiger managed to get over the bridge to Lauenau. Source. Tigers In Combat Volume II by Wolfgang Schneider.

So much to say! First the horse in the start is absolutely a symbolism, associated with war and saviour. In the late stages of the war a lot of "kids" became officers and such. Kids were unfortunately drafted and there is a famous group that managed to do some serious damage. Not lasers but tracers. Dressing in enemy uniform is a war crime and therefor punishable by execution. Sometimes crying is a show of strength... strength in humanity. They usually bite a cyanide capsule and shoot themselves. They hid their women because of what they were told what would happen when allies arrived. And unfortunately it did happen some places. The dinner scene is rough... But very well done! War changes people. PTSD is a very real condition and its affects are very different from person to person. "Do you feel it?! Its called WAR!" Such a powerful quote and scene! Which they have all experienced except Norm, until that point. Tigers... Bigger guns, bigger engines, better armour. Mines are still being found to this day. Canteens are what holds their water. Panzerfaust is not a mini bazooka. In fact a more powerful warhead. But as the movie portrayed, aiming was horrible. German did indeed use green tracers. While the movie is fiction it is indeed inspired by a real story. Great reaction and again, crying is not a weakness, quite the opposites.

17:50 1) Teaching the new rookie to get used to it. 2) This is within the late war (1944-45) period. Nearly the end of the war. 3) That German wore a stolen US military uniform. From a personal perspective, that’s dishonorable, disrespectful, etc. especially to the dead. Basically, like stolen valor. Understandable that he did it to survive but still is a no go. He essentially forfeited all his rights as a POW (Prisoner of War). Why? How? It is generally not allowed for soldiers to wear uniforms that belong to enemy combatants. This is because doing so can create confusion on the battlefield and potentially put their teammate soldier at risk. Additionally, it is considered a war crime under the Geneva Conventions to wear the uniform of an enemy combatant with the intent to deceive. Another possibility of him being a spy. If he wanted to be a POW, he should’ve surrendered without stealing the uniform. However, there’s no guarantee depending on the kind of enemy unit you’re up against cuz even soldiers & officers can take it personally that they’ll just make a cover story for whatever personal reasons so they’re not caught doing a war crime themselves. Stuff like these happen regardless.

The real stars of the movie are two of the tanks -- "Fury" itself, and the Tiger I it is up against in the last fight. Fury is a working Sherman tank, made up to look like a Sherman Firefly -- ironically, not a tank the US Army used, despite the basic tank being a US design. The Firefly was a Sherman modified by the British to carry a heavier gun. The Tiger I is Tiger 131 -- one of the first Tiger tanks captured by the British during WWII. They captured it in North Africa, took it back to England and put it through tests, made training films with it, then handed it over to a museum attached to their primary armored training school. Tiger 131 was used in a film in the 1950s, then disassembled and stored at the museum. They eventually put it together, and it's now the only original Tiger that runs on its own, anywhere in the world.

Fun Fact!: Not sure if it's already been mentioned or not. But the Tiger tank in Fury is an actual Tiger captured by British Commandos during WWII. Tiger 131. And it's currently on display at the Bovington Tank Museum! Always thought that was an interesting bit of this movie, that they weren't using some cloned tiger or one built off of a Russian T-series hull.

90mm? I'm pretty sure Shermans were only up to 76mm (apart from the ones that were fitted with 105mm howitzers, but those weren't for fighting other tanks). Fury has a 76mm gun, the tank used is in a museum and it is a 76mm. This is somewhat confusing when you know that Shermans originally debuted with a 75mm gun. However, IIRC, this was lower velocity (with the ammo used) and simply not effective at penetrating armor. The 76mm was an upgrade, but still had difficulty penetrating the really heavy (and especially the angled) armor on Panthers, and Tigers (I and II). The only option was to get in close(although not as close as in the movie here IIRC) and hopefully line up on a weak spot if you wanted a good chance at a kill. The US did have tank destroyers with bigger guns (3 inch gun that was originally an AA gun).

To explain the tank battle scene .... Americans used Sherman tanks .. Germans called them tommy cookers as they tended to burst into fire after being hit, this tank also had light armour and an under powered gun. The German tiger was a heavy tank with great amour and a powerful gun. The Sherman tank's gun could not penetrate the tigers armour with the exception of a small section on the rear of the tank .. this is why they had to manoeuvre to get behind the German tank. A tiger or even a panther tank could easily take out multiple Sherman tanks before being destroyed ... the allies knew the limitations of the Sherman tank but still sent men out in them as they knew they could out manufacture the Germans so could replace destroyed tanks .... My grandfather had the job in WW2 of going in after the tanks battles, clearing out the dead bodies and pieces of bodies to get the tank repaired and then give them to a new crew ...

Those colored bullets are tracers. The main purpose is so you can see where your bullets are going; generally only used in fully automatic weapons, i.e., large caliber machine guns. In America we measure the size of bullets in tenths of an inch, we call this measurement "caliber"; this is the short version explanation. A 50 caliber, is 0.5 inches in diameter; a 30-cal is 0.3".

The Tiger tank they fought, is Tiger 131. Captured in Tunisia, is one of about 7 Tigers, left in the world. It Is the only running Tiger left. For now. The Sherman "firefly" (I believe), they had, was still a Sherman. Nicknamed the "Zippo", by the Germans, the slogan, "Lights up first time, any time." It was estimated, it took about 5 Allied tanks, to knock out 1 Tiger. Fortunately for the Allies, the Tiger was extremely engineered and difficult to repair in the field. Out numbered, and too little too late, It was just a brief horror story. A little history, as best I can give it. Love your reactions!

17:45 The execution on that German soldier was in line with accepted law of war at the time. If you are captured wearing any uniform item of the enemy army, you are automatically considered a spy outside the normal prisoner of war protections. Even a winter coat as was in this case.

Thank-you Biss for your reaction. It's not an easy movie to watch, but does a fine job of peeling back layers from the rough and masculine business of soldiering to reveal some humanity beneath. It reminds us we are no less human when we are doing something we don't want to do - but have to do. That's why faith plays such a central role. When you are fighting another man in the same position just a different uniform, where else can you go for validation?

14:45 "What is that? Lasers?" No. When you fire guns at very long distances, it's almost impossible to tell what you are hitting. Machineguns fire lots of bullets and they kick and jerk so much that the gunner never knows if he's being accurate or not against distant targets. To solve this problem, they replace 1/5 of the bullets with a special kind of bullet that basically lights on fire when it is shot and you can see the glowing streak of fire as it flies through the air. The gunner watches those streaks to see what he's hitting and make his aim much better. Also, other nearby gunners can see what the first guy is shooting at so it helps them find targets too. These special bullets are called "tracer rounds".

Junior officers like the lieutenant early in the movie often come straight from college with almost no military, and little life, experience yet they are put in charge of a platoon size unit (around 40 soldiers fully staffed). If they are smart they will work to learn from senior NCO's and their commanding officer. Most are and some aren't. Of course they also must live long enough to learn and become competent.

"SO THEY DON'T GET UP AND SHOOT US IN THE BACK!" A valid point. I read an account by a German soldier. He said that Americans did not use their tanks and infantry together, properly. He said that American infantry would lag behind the tanks at a distance. That allowed the German infantry to stay down in their foxholes to avoid tank fire, then pop up after the tanks passed to engage the unprotected American infantry. If they had a Panzerfaust, they could pop up and shoot the soft rear of the tank, because there would be no infantry there to cover the tank. Here, the Americans are doing it the proper way.

the ".50" is the large machinegun on top. It fires a half inch wide bullet (.50) and can chop up small trucks even very light armoured vehicles. Drawback .. you must stand on the back of the tank to use it. Its full name is a "Browning .50 cal Heavy Machinegun". Yanks put them on top of everything that can carry it. It was first made in 1918 .. and yanks still use it today its that good a design.

My uncle was very much like Norman fighting in Fallujah. He told me that when you first arrive, you arrive as a peacekeeper, you try to be nice to the locals, tell them you are there to help them. All of a sudden you hear one of your comrades / best friend was killed by a terrorist disguising himself as a civilian and all of a sudden you cannot help but imagine every civilian as a possible enemy. On top of this, you do not know who killed your best friend so you begin to develop hatred towards an entire race of people.

I seen this movie about 10 times and it never gets old. Because it's so realistic to how war was before, but my best scene was when they all accepted death was guaranteed in the tank. And top found that bottle and said" well I won't be alive for the hangover anyway, the Bible say his best verse ever. Best job I ever had" to them it was a duty to our country not themselves. Love it

The Sherman tank used but mostly by the Americans were nicknamed zippo’s after the cigarette lighter meaning that lights up with every strike. It did not take much to kill those tanks. The Tigers on the other hand it took five American tanks to take out one German tank.

When the American Sherman tank had the short, low velocity 75 mm gun, that was the unfortunate way they had to deal with the Tiger tank. 3 or more vs. 1, lay smoke, flank it to the rear and shoot it in the less armored rear engine compartment. The Tiger had a massive advantage in armor and cannon. You just prayed you weren't one of the tanks the Tiger would easily kill. Fury is an "Easy Eight" version of the Sherman and had a more effective 76.2 mm high velocity cannon. It could actually penetrate the Tiger at a respectable distance.

The white horse with the German riding it may have had some meaning. In Revelation, the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse is riding a pale horse, and he is Death. There may have been a translation error of sorts though. The original word, Greek in this case I think, didn't have an equivalent word in English so they used "pale". The word really meant greenish-white, the pallor of a corpse. The Sherman tank and most others in WWII had five crew. The assistant driver sometimes did assist the driver, but usually he operated the bow machine gun and radio, depending on the tank. Later tanks didn't need the fifth man because radios improved as did the handling of the tanks. At the end, the loader said they had four smoke and some "supercharged" and antitank shells left. The smoke are what set the building on fire. Supercharged were the explosive rounds. When he was using that tool on the he was setting a delay on the fuse. This was so the shell would ricochet and then explode in the air making the burst more effective. The antitank was a solid projectile that wouldn't have been much use against infantry. They had to get the machine gun off the roof because the other one broke. Tank guns usually have a machine gun alongside the main gun and is called a coaxial gun or co-ax. Since there were the same gun they could be swapped out. Maybe. Sometimes the guns are technically the same but different enough that a regular one could not fit in coax position. Lastly, if you want a somewhat odd romantic movie, try Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride".

If I'm not mistaken all the characters and the story are fiction except the final stand battle is loosely based on the story of a young soldier that survived his tank crew and held off/slowed the advance of German troops saving lives of other troops with just a M2 .50 cal heavy machine gun mounted on top of his tank.
