if i had paid for home delivery and then had to drive 90 miles to pick it up it would still be there with me then calling ikea for a full refund
@DavidKirtley6 жыл бұрын
It's not just a house right now, it is also a video production set. It was unavoidable. If you had gone with open shelving, we would have shots of your underwear in the background of every video. I think it is funny to read all the comments that say you should have built it. Yeah, winter is breathing down your neck and you are going to stop, reorganize everything, design the wardrobe, mill the lumber, dimension the stock, cut out all the joinery, assemble, apply finish, move it upstairs, and then reconfigure everything again for the tasks at hand. All at the same time as you are finishing up the sealing of the house, getting the electrical more usable, finishing the driveway, and hooking up appliances. Oh yeah, you need to think about putting the chains back on the backhoe, build some steps so you can get in and out of the back door, finish the garage door installation, and install the venting for the dryer. All while you are trying to move forward with the construction, keep up the video production for daily videos, then edit and post the videos. Makes the Ikea look like a pretty good choice in time management.

I love IKEA. Most of my stuff is from them. Sure the things they sell won't last a century, but they don't break the bank, they are of acceptable quality, and I don't expect it to last forever. Once in a while a change of decoration style is a good thing.

Its made out of literal cardboard and fiber board. The quality and durability is so bad that even half ass DIY version will be better and longer lasting. Also i dont know if this is general thing, but all couples i have known to go into IKEA seem to break up with in a year after the visit :D Also it tends to cost a guy quite a hefty sum.

Ikea products are made with inferior materials the are designed to break over a short time. Thus causing you to spend more money.

Exactly they chose to buy it because it served their purpose at that point in time, so why do they then need to trash the quality and design? it is what it is and Ikea does it very well.

I'm usually the one to stick up for your choices. But, after your lengthy IKEA rant, I certainly feel like a third rate citizen for liking IKEA. Even my solid oak bookcase (not IKEA) has an almost cardboard back. Engineering wise you don't need more. Even the best custom closets use partical board shells with real wood faces and doors. But I'm going to hold my rant until you order your kitchen and garage built-ins and get a chance to see what's out there. 😫🌞🌵

As a home remodeler, I've installed a surprising amount of knock-down type cabinetry over the years. While I agree with your sentiments about IKEA type furniture, I think you'll find it surprisingly durable (I did a kitchen 6-7 years ago that still looks and functions as well as when installed). Just be careful if you need to move it because that's when it's like to break

In our market place, Ikea furniture has a good resale market, as long as it's in decent shape. So, while everything ends up in the landfill over time, these can hold up well. When IKEA came to our town we didn't think much of them and their furniture. But then our young girls needed bedroom furniture that didn't cost too much so we opted for IKEA. At the same time an IKEA larger couch was within our budget and we decided to buy it. It's still in really good condition 10 years later. We now have two beds, (one of which we bought with bengal cats in mind as cats can go behind the bed and sit (vulture) on the headboard) 1 couch, 2 large closets, 4 dressers and two footstools later and I'd say we like the furniture for it's cost effectiveness and functionality. Bonus, our marriage survived with the putting together of all of those things :):) As an aside, when we were growing up each of our sets of parents bought really nice expensive furniture. But when the time came to downsize there was a big disappointment with these parents in how little their expensive furniture was now worth. To me this makes the IKEA furniture even more appealing.

I was the sales executive who sold companies like Ikea our services to ship. No way any of these companies will bring you freight to your door. One driver one truck can't do this where you are. Also you brought up the no roads that are paved yesterday.? I would be surprised if anybody brings you LTL freight to your door. So when you buy your next products and it's supposed to be home delivered you explain exactly where you live and ask from your money back. Always ask is it docked delivery or home delivery?

Our experience with IKEA is okay. No, it is not the best quality you can get, and yes, you have to put it together yourself and no, you cannot move from house to house more then once taking your IKEA cupboards BUT If you need storage, like the simple designs, if you do not intend to move every six months, IKEA is getting you what you need. We have PAX in our house too, standing there since 15 years, no bigger problems.

Now - let's go wire the SIPs.

Hi, Jesse and Alyssa. As a Swede, it is especially fun to watch a video describing how you put together IKEA furniture. As you may suspect, it is a bit of our everyday life in Sweden. What I personally like about IKEA is that you can choose whether you want their furniture to be a permanent interior in your life or just a temporary one depending on your financial abilities/preferences. In Sweden, we have different websites that deal with used items and it makes it easier if you have only intended to have IKEA's furniture as a temporary solution. If you only take care of the furniture, there is always someone who is willing to inherit them when you are done with them yourself. I would like to wish you a continued fantastic journey in your construction of your dream home. Sincerely Jonas

Little tip! There's nothing stopping you replacing the hardboard backing on Ikea items with quarter-inch ply! It makes them feel a ton more robust, and if you screw it onto a glued-in batten frame instead of pinning it to the carcass it can make them last five times as long. It's a kinda combination of handmade and flatpack that works within a budget but gets you something better.
@jamesk16196 жыл бұрын
Tip: Add glue to the dowels and the joints.. they will last a little longer and even help them stay together when moving them around. It won't be a great bond but it does help. This works especially well with drawer bottoms.

I think IKEA has a lot of marketing potential to do here in the US. I'm a Swede living in SF and your attitude towards IKEA reflects that of what I've seen most people have. I think the doubt is not really originating from reality though because if you buy the high end IKEA stuff you get close to the best quality you can get on the market, but for a fraction of the price. Lots of local furniture firms make these ridiculously expensive pieces that still are poorly made with low quality. But because they have a high price tag, people seem to believe that it must be good. In Sweden, most families buy IKEA furniture for the things IKEA are really good at. 1) Kitchen cabinets - few manufacturers beat them here. 2) Wardrobes - for the reasons you describe, and 3) Beds - really high quality that will last you at least 15 years. Sofas and other furniture is sort of "meh" and sure you can find ok things, but here I would recommend looking elsewhere. :) Anyways, my 2 cents (since you didn't ask) ;)
@wantblackwolf6 жыл бұрын
If you really wanted to make a sacrifice you would of bought something at Walmart for a 1/3 of the price. $600+ for something temporary is not a sacrifice. Hell one of those metal wire closets you buy off the shelf for $30 would of been the real sacrifice.
@rethinkscience84546 жыл бұрын
I can believe in the U.S the land of litigation they would allow someone to wire their own house - in Qld Australia you would be fined $30 000 for unlicensed electrical work and your house would have no insurance. If someone was electrocuted on your property you would be charged with manslaughter. And to think you tried to install a generator lethally wrong. Leave it up to a contractor who knows what to do.

I have been to IKEA a twice. I bought a wall for TV and books. It was expedient at the time. I moved it only one time. After 5 years it was trash. Moving in to the house has been good to both of you. You now have more color and a better complexion. Alyssa has regained the face she had 3 years ago. Not that there was ever a deficiency of good looks and intelligence. The assembling of the Armoir will be helpful to some. It was nostalgic for many, including me. This is not about your furniture!! I was thinking about your Wood Stove and how you could move it into the new house with out putting a hole in ANY of the sips! This would be temporary. You could build a through window pass with plywood, cement board and the through wall thimble. basically build this "window Plug" to fit inside the double hung window you could then pile the chimney through the plug and then be able to use the stove to heat your house until you get the radiant floor installed. Just my 2 cents!! I live in upstate NY and we deal with 210" of snow each season and I love heat!!! and would love to have that dry warm cozy air in the house to enjoy after dealing with the winter!!

You folks are doing the best with what you have to work with. Using even 1/4 " plywood for the back of the cabernet when you repurpose your closet will make things so much sturdier than the normal material. Also a touch of wood glue on the dowl pins also will really help in reassembly. This is an appropriate fix for your needs at this time and this can be reused in an office or light duty storage closet not in your main living area. Keeping it out of the land fill.

Can't see if someone else has written this but as a swede and with a lot of experience of assembling IKEA furniture and clothing cabinets the big secret is to disassemble the cabinets if you're going to move them up- or downstairs or to another house. Put a big towel underneath and push/pull gently from side to side if moving it to another place on the same floor. And this will help you to keep the cabinets useable for a relatively long time. Easy peasy-ish 😊

IKEA stuff can last a lot longer than you think it will. We have our guest bedroom outfitted with IKEA furniture and it’s done fine for the last 11 years. When you get your forever closet built, you may want to consider repurposing the wardrobe down to the area by the washer and dryer. That would give you space for the extra bulky winter clothes while also giving you a place hang clothes while they air dry. The drawers could also become a home for the things you use with the washer & dryer unit like detergent, stain remover stuff, heavy-duty hand cleaner for the sink etc.

Idealistic views rarely survive reality and there will always be compromise. The biggest mistake I see is that you decided on a house that’s way too big even though you might feel it was a compromise as well. Be that as it may, it’s what you have now and you are doing a great job with it. IKEA does the job, and since it won’t last forever, it’s not a temporary becomes permanent scenario

I don't think you should have any reason to fret over your living accommodations or means to cook a meal in the house, all you have to do is picture in your mind what people in some of the third world countries have to live in or means to cook a meal and you will feel like a king and queen in your castle. Move into the house and keep pushing ahead and I'm sure all will end well.👷🏻🚽 50 year retired plumber 🎅🏽&🎉

You are doing a great job on building a fantastic home. You have come so far don't start buying cheap crap. If you have to take a little more time to buy quality then take the time. Enjoy the journey and you will have the greatest memories of building your dreams. It took my wife and I 20 years to build our dream home and guess what we are returning and were going to start building our retirement dream home in the wilderness. God bless an keep moving forward one day at a time.

We are from Denmark and we often buy IKEA furniture. The quality is not high, but you get a lot- and nice furniture for less money. Sometime I strengthen the furniture with additional screws, but often it is not necessary. IKEA furniture are fine if you not a millionaire!!! In reality It is not about spending a lot of money, but have furniture with at lot of space, nice looking and a lot of options for a low price. Last thing, when you mount handles, you can buy handles-templates a IKEA. Thanks for you videos. Love the nature around you. We live next to the ocean, but miss the mountains og the smell of trees and milled wood.

As we built our house over the last year, I bought plenty from Ikea. But our wardrobes we ordered from Gothic Furniture because Ikea's selection of wardrobes wasn't up to par. Check them out if it's not too late.

I had a client out of Europe that was making flat pack furniture mostly childrens room stuff, but also office desk sets and credenza systems. These were not made with cardboard and were composed of high quality materials. I ended up with a set for my office at home. Despite the high quality materials they were assembled with twist locks. Therein lies the rub. Those twist locks will work themselves loose over time and while doing so they ream the hole so that they become unable over time to tighten the bond between panels. Therefore if you ever have to disassemble and move a set you are contributing to the demise of the set. My suggestion is to put those units together and glue and screw them letting the twist locks act as clamps just to keep them together while doing this.
