I think most artists have a preference in a body type- but the “pretty girls” thing often is a specific girl and also specific poses. Idk I think it wouldn’t be as much of a problem if I saw these girls at different angles, with backgrounds and props ect. It makes the girl less of a subject and more of a character. There is no personality in “girl” so just drawing that with nothing else seems kinda bleak.
@dawrushesin
@dawrushesin Жыл бұрын
i agree, its not the girls that's the problem but the impersonality of how they're drawn. why draw a person at all if you're going to draw them with the same amount of character as a bowl of fruit? it's objectification.

So true! That's why I appreciate Guweiz's art. Yeah it's still pretty girls but it's also story, and different poses and angles, and interesting backgrounds. I think that's what it takes to make a career drawing pretty girls; expanding on other skills alongside it.

Yeah definitely. I know Michele didn't mean for this to be a socio-political topic but it kind of is. A lot of the pretty women that are drawn are viewed from the male gaze which comes from being raised in a patriarchal society. Beautiful women don't just look one way. They can be all shapes and sizes.

THIS FR!! I feel like with men you get your Miguel O’Haras and Peter b Parker’s, who have very different shapes and features but both are HUGELY popular, especially in fan art, for being attractive (just the most recent example to come to mind lol) But I feel like female characters just have such a narrower spectrum where they’re still considered attractive, and they tend to be extremely similar in facial structure and shape, which I just personally find lame considering (especially with animation and cartoons!!) that there’s SO MUCH ROOM for exaggeration and experimentation, they just tend to exaggerate the same features compared to male characters (ex. “Doe” eyes, small nose, similar face ratios, etc). Ik blizzard is an actually terrible company but Moira from OW was one of the most memorable (HELLA attractive imo lol) female characters in recent to me and I just love how refreshing she was in the genre

I feel it’s more a societal thing than an artist thing. The conversations among friends at school, among family at the restaurant, are where change starts. We are already making progress with convincing men to appreciate a wider variety of bodies and faces, but there’s still more work to be done!

I think what maybe doesn't help is that a lot of artist use pinterest for references and it seems to push certain aesthetics to you even without you interacting with those pins so then people end up drawing the same things over and over again that and the instagram algorithm pushes the "pretty person" art more than anything else

I always use pinterest for references, and it takes a bit of digging in order to get a reference that matches what im looking for. Usually its filled with aesthetic pretty girls, so i cant really find other body types or options unless i do a whole exploration just for a few good pins. Its pretty frustrating since pinterest has some really good stuff, but its hidden under lots of pins that dont seem to fit as a good reference for what im aiming for.

Completely agree. I use Pinterest for refs all the time. Even though I've started looking up candid photography for references (trying to improve at drawing more expressions, characters interacting with each other & their environment, etc) I will STILL get recommended a ton of generic pretty girls doing a neutral thousand yard stare directly into the camera

This is such good timing, I’ve been reflecting on this myself since drawing pretty things is a habit I’ve built up all my life - I’ve been working on growing past this for years now because it genuinely feels more authentic to me, but I still have a long way to go. Recently I set the artistic goal for myself to draw more honestly, rather than simply drawing beautifully. Thanks for bringing up the topic, this was a great video!

coming from someone who was fixated on manhwas and webtoon art styles because of conventionally attractive characters, some people seem to get really defensive when valid points are voiced about the reality of drawing pretty girls. i think your videos are so insightful from on industry pov and i’m sorry some folks immediately project what they *think* you’re gonna say without even listening. this is a generalization but i’m just gonna say it- based on my experience, a lot of these defensive people come off as incels to me... they’re enraged by even the suggestion that diversifying one’s art beyond drawing generic pretty girls could benefit them because they twist it into the notion that people are “policing” their art. like c’mon dude, draw whatever you want, no one is holding you at gunpoint. i can enjoy lovely pretty girl artworks while simultaneously pondering how the lack of variety in the definition of pretty woman speaks to larger societal problems and sometimes artistic limitations. and tbh i do agree that artist’s aren’t obligated to worry about other people’s self-esteem if they’re exaggerating proportions since people online also need to be less impressionable. like you said, it’s nuanced!

I subbed. This was a very respectful way to send this message too: youre limiting yourself if you only draw pretty people. Its easy to make a perfect, perfectly symmetrical face. But its hard to make unique, even ugly features in your own style and make them look plausible and cohesive. If you look at the greats of ages past, you often find studies of "ugly" people that inform their anatomy and enhance their work. I think a lot of people feel called out by this one; a lot of us fall into the trap of drawing within our confort zone!

For people looking to grow their social media platforms or professional work, drawing the same "pretty girl or boy" face in the same poses, isn't really going to help you. The art work is lovely, but it's boring, making it more likely for people to dismiss you. "I've seen this a 100 times whats make THIS image so special?" It can suck to hear that as an artist, but it's a hard truth. Usually I find the most popular of artists are ones that are able to set themselves apart from the crowd, you can easily recognize their work. As for the professional side, being flexible aka draw in multiple styles, is a necessity, you MUST be diverse. If you want to keep drawing "pretty" people go ahead! But I encourage anyone to branch out into textures, animations, backgrounds, linework (etc) anyway to make your artwork more unique. Experimenting and learning is always a good thing.

I LOVE this message because it's always so sad to see people limiting their artwork to just one face or look. There are so many different body shapes, nose shapes, eye shapes, hair textures, skin colors, hand poses, clothing styles-- just limiting yourself to "pretty girls" can limit your ability to create interesting characters and diverse stories that it's sad to think that some people are taking offense to this kind of message. Like guys come on, if you wanna draw pretty girls, that's fine! Michelle said it herself at the beginning of the video. Have fun! Do what you want! Explore your style! So many genres of media have profited off of pretty aesthetics (ex. Sailor Moon, Maison Ikkoku, Disney, etc) but also know that there's a whole world of styles to explore and there's more than one definition of "beautiful"

Was no one gonna mention just how gorgeous Michelle is rn??!!? Love the style and look, its not often talked about just how much work that can go into putting a video like this together and look amazing doing it. I especially liked the part at 8:20 - 9:20 , there was beautiful wording there and I definetly wrote it down myself for later. Experimenting and knowing well just how much your art skills can actually be applied in different areas of production would make you alot more hireable. I love drawing pretty girls as a default setting in my brain to warm up, but theres a whole world of possibilites that I often see artists close themselves off to trying to draw. Awesome videos as always.

As an artist, I started drawing largely only men. Yes, my "men" were generally quite feminine and if I showed my art to anyone, they'd think I was drawing a woman. That, and the fact early on in my art journey I had quite a bit of "same face syndrome". I had to figure out how to make my "men" actually look like men, and figure out a way to draw actual women. Generally that requires work with face shapes and right placement of face features. Nowadays it's instinctual to me. I just know I'm drawing a man, and even if my men still have a lot of feminine features, you can tell they're men. I hope so, at least.

I want to draw characters with in scenes that tell a story, I want to draw more dark or gory stuff, but I always worry that I won't be good at it (and that people won't like it). Many years ago I have train almost 2 years long at least 2 hours daily to draw many different things like humans , animals , creatures , objects and backgrounds. Now I know what I like to draw and what I totally dislike ..... I don't really like to draw brackgrounds , objects , plants , machines , male superheros , ugly creatures , horror stuff , old people , children , too cartoony characters , chubby people , avarage looking people or dark sceneries. I get easy bored if I draw animals , many european funny looking comic characters (Asterix , Tintin , Smurfs , Werner , Gaston) , some manga styles like Studio Ghibli , faces with too many expressions , good looking males , diverse looking characters. I think everybody should draw the things that he or she likes the most ....... even if this means that some things would not exist. I doubt that someone would make videos about : - The "UGLY TRUTH" About Making Piano Music Only - The "UGLY TRUTH" About Making Rap Music Only - The "UGLY TRUTH" About Making Electronic Dance Music Only - The "UGLY TRUTH" About Making Heavy Metal Music Only - The "UGLY TRUTH" About Making Reggae Music Only Art should be enjoyable to do for the artists and not be forced by the job or the society.

There's also a bias toward drawing men as hugely muscular and heroic; it's rare to see more "normal" men in concept art as well. I definitely agree with you though on your points, not contradicting your video at all, just wanted to add that as something people should be aware of.

I never thought of beauty standards while drawing as a child nor adult I never compared myself to my fantasy portraits I simply wanted to escape my reality and have fun, one of my very first drawings as a child happened to be female as I naturally gravitatd towards drawing females I couldn't help what my brain wanted to draw at that age, but I realized over time if I want my work to be marketable and sell I'll have to switch things up, aside from this my human anatomy skills are rough and all the technical aspects of improving creative anatomy skills began to give me anxiety hence I'd over think every detail and I started avoiding drawing all together therefore I switched my style as I don't have as many years to spare on hyper focusing on technicalities. I have to be able to produce content I need to create work that I may be able to sell one day soon but for me drawing pretty girls was never about promoting unrealistic beauty standards or comparing my own appearance to a made up peice of art I simply enjoyed drawing what I drew, I grew up watching Sailor Moon and Studio Ghibli and Disney I also grew up watching Hanna-Barbera Cartoons etc and I wanted to create similar characters, but now that I'm an adult I realize we really have to have our stuff together to be taken seriously especially with A.I. on our heels. I don't think I'll make it in terms of working for a big art studio but I might be able to earn an income via creating my own art products and growing my online presence, though I have to be honest things haven't been going great thus far and I'm becoming less optimistic about my odds in this field but who knows I might be able to turn things around with a bit more time ☮️🎨❤

The main issue with drawing only pretty girls/guys is that I just dont think they are pretty. They aren't attractive, they aren't cute, they aren't nice to look or interesting - if anything at all I find them off-putting and uncanny. They don't look like people and the things they have that resemble people aren't any part of humanity I have any interest in. Ultimately, though - i don't give a shit WHAT people draw or find interesting. If more people genuinely like the "pretty" super smooth feminine guys/girls then its a good thing its so popular, I guess. I just kinda have doubts thats the case, given how diverse human interests are and how frequently what being 'pretty' means changes in any given culture. I kinda think people just like ''pretty'' stuff because they are expected too rather than exploring what REALLY makes them tick... ...like slightly older men with scruffy beards, whose crows-feet next to their eyes smile just as obviously as their mouths do. Maybe they've gotten a little roughed in their life, maybe they care about other things more deeply than their appearance, maybe they have learned not to care about what other people think - but they are genuine and open and do their best to make the most of anything life throws at them now. They've been humbled by too many things to care about pride and just want to enjoy having people around for the time they have left. I'd take 100 of those over another smooth-faced high school boy with effortlessly good makeup. But thats just me. I'd KILL for more art that emits that sort of vibe, but overall I want artists to draw what makes THEM happiest. Drawing things you dont care about makes the artwork feel off to everyone else, too.

i was honestly hoping youd talk about this more in-depth bc this is an issue im especially passionate about as someone who doesnt see much representation for myself in media. i think its less of an idea of drawing "pretty" girls as it is drawing conventionally attractive ones. one glaring example of this is the fact that artists like this rarely, if ever, draw fat characters when i've seen SO MANY beautiful fat women out there! its the lack of variety more than the fact that everyone is pretty. you can make people pretty while still making them look distinctive from each other!!!
@cybersekkin

I think you have a better nuanced position this time. I still think the charge is too steeped against fantasy and escape that many draw pretty women for. It reminds me of this quote, "What class of men would you expect to be most pre-occupied with, and most hostile to, the idea of escape? and gave the obvious answer: jailers." C.S. Lewis recalling a conversation he had with J.R.R. Tolkien. I think the basic premise is great though, be careful not to get stuck in drawing only one thing and draw many things. It just hits me as too focused against drawing pretty women as an unnecessary point and you just stick to the "draw many things, in many ways" point and avoid being ensnared in all this.

I don't know about "pretty" girls. It's a drawing, so they'll always end up being some level of pretty, lacking the imperfections of real life unless you are going for photo realism. But if you are talking about same face, same body shape and proportions, then I agree. But when it comes to stylized stuff I don't think you have to necessarily make drawings that reflect people in real life. That just seems to be a thing with certain companies trying to raise their esg scores. Most average people don't look for that or connect with a character's appearance, but their personality and what they stand for. Most characters historically are drawn with an ideal to inspire others to be their best selves. How many people decided to get in shape because of son goku from Dragon ball? So yeah, diversifying your skills is good, but unless you are trying to get hired as a professional for a team or project you can draw what you want and just have a portfolio on the side showing your full range of ability. I mean, sure I'd like to be able to draw with the range of say miyazaki of studio ghibli films. I'd say that's my ideal. It really does come down to the genre, context and what the story is about that will determine the characters you will make. At the end of the day the story you're trying to tell matters most. If the story is genuine it will resonate with the audience no matter what it looks like. Ex: before one piece got popular in the West most arguments was that it was "ugly" with the character designs, but once people actually read it and get into the story that doesn't bother them anymore or they grow to genuinely like them because of their characterisation for the most part.

Yeah the issue is that the definition of pretty girl is too limited. All girls are pretty. Big W for nature. W. Is for women. I know it sounds like a joke but genuinely. I love guys too ofc as a guy myself I think we are awesome. But also women. Idk maybe I think all humans are beautiful. That'd be poetic even.

Thanks so much for the video. IMHO, the key to things as potentially problematic as exploiting implicit or explicit gender norms in our art (especially as a crutch) is being clear on WHAT we're doing, and WHY we're doing it. This practice of...[sigh😑]...thinking...is sadly not the norm in our community. It's also not CURRENTLY the norm with A.I. image generators. Go figure. So if we're trying to buy ourselves a few more years, we could maybe put more thought into our art than the PrettyGurlVomitter9000...

Maybe the reason that many people missed the point of your video was the contradictory statements included in it. If someone is hurting their own career by only sticking to one specific subject and style of their art, then hating them surely isn't the right emotion here? In the previous video, you also mentioned how you hate artists who bash other artists for their drawing skills. It's confusing how then you proceed to bashing other artists for their thematic choices (regardless of how they affect their career and personal development)
@mewTripled
@mewTripled Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure where I came off as "bashing people" through the tone of my video. My channel in general discusses pursuing an art career, especially for those who are art students who are serious about landing a professional gig in the art, animation, and comic industries. I've already mentioned that there is nothing wrong with choosing to draw pretty girls if that's what you prefer to do. I even listed the pro's of drawing pretty girls from 1:54 -3:30, as I myself have once been in the place where I only drew pretty girls. However, as somebody who is in various art industries and have seen how people select candidates for potential roles, I'm just providing my knowledge of what can potentially limit people from landing on their goals, if pursuing an art career / having art career options is what they want. I don't know how many times I have to reiterate that there is nothing wrong with drawing pretty girls as a hobby or even for a career if you are able to find one that allows that. However, the truth is not everyone will be able to land a job drawing pretty girls only, and I think it's fair to let people know that truth so they can know what to do to move forward and do what is best for their art career.
@martynaspyra9
@martynaspyra9 Жыл бұрын
@@mewTripled Yes, but that's where the contradiction creeps in - the new video is clearly set in a different tone of a caring and considerate advice (which is the content I follow you for!). However, the previous entry was enveloped in the list of things that you think are wrong with the art community. And with nearly all of them being great and extremely valid points, like calling out immature behaviours, etc. suddenly hating someone's personal *harmless* art choices was the odd one. I hope you can see my point.
@mewTripled
@mewTripled Жыл бұрын
@@martynaspyra9 Thanks for sharing your point, I can see where you are coming from. I apologize if my previous video came off as "hateful," as I can see how the title in itself makes it come off that way. To clarify though, I do not hate someone's choice of drawing pretty girls only. It's all about the intent behind it. If you are able to pursue your goals and are happy doing so, I'm happy for you! However, I can also see when an artist wants to pursue something else like becoming a storyboard artist, but their habits from drawing pretty girls ONLY could be a hurdle in the process. Some art students may not see it as a hurdle, and remain frustrated as to why they can't land that storyboard role (or any other career). That entire process can be frustrating as an artist trying to make a living, and that is just why I personally have a distaste to drawing pretty girls only. I am sure all artists have things they hate, love, like, dislike about certain things in the world of art, and those are just mine. I feel the way I shared that opinion was able to balance both my honesty while also providing help and advice for those who do feel like that is an obstacle in their career that they need to tackle. I hope that makes sense!

MewTripled wasn't the only one pro who talked about "pretty girl syndrome" in art communities. Mohammed Agbadi also discussed this topic, much earlier than Michelle. She wasn't bashing someone, as an artist myself, I personally see "pretty girl syndrome" as a problem. Many beginner artists try to get away from this. It's a fact the most of beginners often stick to "pretty girl syndrome" cause pretty anime/videogame girls are popular on such sites like Instagram and Tiktok. It's literally the ONLY way you can get popularity as an artist on such sites (yeah, algorithms suck). When we discuss this problem, we don't put the fault on artists cause they're actually the victims in this situation. The fault is always on stupid algorithms and audience which is addicted to anime girls and PRESSURES artist to always draw mainstream. I want to draw a lot of things but sometimes, I feel like I'm FORCED to draw pretty girls, I'm not against them, but I just don't want to draw only them.

(sorry for the paragraph, most of this is just a rant about how lack lustre my art class is as i have learned more on my own and with youtube than in my art class .)

Drawing pretty girls at nauseam can box the artist in what their conception of a women has to look like in order to be drawn. "Ugly" features like a nose with a hump are often consciously or subconsciously deemed not beautiful enough to be represented. That's good for the conception of beauty for the artist nor their audience.

Absolutely, but probably not as a production artist in the animation or video game industry. I've definitely heard of people who made a living doing pet portraits or painting racehorses or stuff like that, and I know of a pottery shop that has a fairly big portion of their sales as decorative carved fish and whale plaques and bowls/mugs etc. painted with fish and whales. It will of course be a tougher career path and you'll have to be an entrepreneur and be good at marketing etc. to find that niche audience, but other people have done it.

While I know this is specifically for people looking for work in the industry, I just want to add my two cents. You don't have to draw diversity if you don't want to. I used to beat myself up for this because people would say things like "oh, I wish art was more diverse/inclusive!", but I couldn't draw that type of stuff, and frankly, didn't want to. I would put myself in a box and not try out different lighting styles, color styles, body types, etc. Then I realized that I don't have to be diverse if I don't want to. Sure, it's nice to branch out and not draw the same thing once in a while, but I don't have to work towards it if I don't want to. I am now, though, since a thing i'm working on requires it, but it it's not always needed. So basically, don't beat yourself up for being diverse, and just have fun! I know the industry is different from everything and all, but I just wanted to put this out there. The industry shouldn't decide what you can and can't draw.

I for many years wanted to draw but never got into it enough to get over the initial barrier to entry. Then, as I became more comfortable and understanding of my gender non-binarism, i started drawing pretty girls to express that. Because i'm too old to make significant gender changes, in my mind, and I dont want to half way it because I know how uncomfortable it makes some people. I know thats my own preprogrammed transphobia, but I live with that fear because my family instilled it in me. So my outlet for all things feminine became drawing pretty girls, And a wonderful outlet it ihas been! But as i've progressed the last few years i've gotten to the point where yes, i'd like to go professional with my art. I now face exactly some of the things you mention in this video- However, i feel uncomfortable drawing outside of that box because it has become a representation my femininity and I fear drawing something else will distort my self image. And, also, part of the way I wish to go pro actually poses another problem- I dont draw them pretty ENOUGH. I try and stay rougher and sketchier because I know i'm rough around the edges. I dont have the fine ability to render true beauty but I need that for some of my goals! I'm sorry if thats a bit of a wall- It was a bit of an emotional purge for me. I guess my point is yes, sometimes it is a crutch. But not always an art crutch. It is the only way for me to put beauty and prettiness out into the world. I wish i could myself, but i'm a realist. And the comfort that that comfort zone provides might be a healing space for some.

I think it's important to separate what we draw for the purpose of becoming professional and what we draw just for ourselves and our own satisfaction. If you want to make it your profession, I can't really think how you could do it drawing only pretty girls.. Would be very difficult, and living out of art is difficult enough. Also, I think there's no reason not to keep your femininity in your art even while drawing different topics 😊

@@babyblouie Agreed! It's never too late for you to transition. And fuck other people and their discomfort. It's your life and your body, and I know people are very hostile towards trans and gnc folks lately, but you should do what makes you happy. And if you recognize that these ideas (that it's too late for you, and that "half-waying" it will make others uncomfortable) are just your internalized transphobia, then you should take the next step in unpacking the transphobe within you. I'd recommend finding or forming a community space of older trans/gnc folks! They're not commonly represented in queer spaces nowadays, but that doesn't mean they don't exist, or that they aren't present in queer spaces already. And I think a sense of community and kinship with people like you could help you feel seen and supported.
