Brilliant fun watching these three discuss their dislike - or perhaps complete disdain - for five bands that others might think they should like. Simon sharpens the stake and strikes the first blow and that continues through much of the episode. OK guys, I don't do this often, but I'll play along and give just one shot: Iron Maiden. I tend to keep quiet about this band, as they are worshipped here on SoT; you could put a blindfold on me, spin me around for minutes, then ask me to pick up a rock - state of sheer dizziness and all - and throw it. Guaranteed that that rock would not land without hitting dozens of Maiden fanatics. Discovered the band in the mid-'90s, and no matter how many times I was subjected to them (by way of radio, through friends, etc.), or went back and gave them many chances over the years (even if sporadically), things just never clicked. For one of the pre-eminent bands in metal, it is to an almost shocking degree how dull and lackluster their music has always sounded; it bores me to tears. I don't mean to come off as someone choosing to jump on some sort of Di'Anno bandwagon, but Killers is the only album from Maiden that I've ever truly liked. Everything after that? Snooze. My sincerest apologies go out to the HVS (especially Nick and Ryan.)

@knightvisioniixv8 ай бұрын
Seeing as I haven't posted a single comment on The UK Connection in quite some time, this post will be a fairly long one, as I offer my thoughts on some of the artists mentioned. The Who - I have to admit my initial reaction to them was one of disgust; I thought they were a bunch of obnoxious clowns, and this from having seen a televised documentary on them back in my early teens. I was none too impressed by their stage antics, and to my ears, the guys in the band sounded as if they were at cross-purposes. A few years after that, I came around. I bought Tommy and soaked it up, both musically and conceptually. I then bought Quadrophenia (my fave), Who's Next, and a bunch of the band's earlier albums. Having said all this, I was most obsessed with The Who during the three- or four-year period that began in my late teens, and ended in my early 20s. I don't find the urge to listen to them all that often these days. While I do love the Stones, they were never anywhere near 'the greatest' in anything to my ears. Same goes for Aerosmith; both are good fun, and when the mood for some 'sleazy', down-and-dirty rock strikes, I go to them most frequently. Even though I love my share of industrial/electronic, I have never cared for Rammstein, and quite a number of people I know from many parts of the globe feel the same way; it's not just an 'American' thing. Pete just about spoke my own experience with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. All throughout the '90s, and in the States, they were inescapable. I bought Blood Sugar Sex Magik upon its release, and I also received a cassette compilation of their hits as a holiday gift from a relative around the same time. I liked them enough, but my enjoyment of the band dissipated before the decade ended; I sold both items, as the Chili Peppers became tiresome all too quickly (my continued love of select songs notwithstanding.) Furthermore, there were other bands of their ilk that outclassed them (e.g., Fishbone.) Magma. Yeah, I had a feeling they would come up, and as always it is hilarious. Maybe not a prerequisite for enjoying them, I sometimes think having an appreciation for vocal music of many kinds (both secular and non-secular) will give some an idea where Christian Vander was/is coming from. Great show, guys!

Great episode! I actually understand why people wouldn't like Hendrix. As a guitar player i love his playing, creativity and songwriting but i really don't like his voice,he isn't a terrible singer but his voice definitely isn't anything particularly good either and after a few songs it starts to feel more like homework than entertainment for me. I understand not liking most of the latter day Sonata Arctica albums, BUT those first 4-5 albums, up until Unia are just great euro power metal. The first 3 albums in particular. The debut is especially essential. Korpiklaani is fun, but aren’t top tier folk metal to me. You’d be much better off listening to bands like Ensiferum, Turisas, Elvenking, Mago de Oz, Eluveitie, Tyr, etc. I liked the Red Hot Chili Peppers early in my music journey, they were my first 2 concerts, but I have definitely outgrown them. Some good songs though. The rest is very spotty. I miss them playing their earlier style.

_Very_ similar experience with RHCP and agree. Loved Mother’s Milk in ‘89-‘90 and then burnout.

Quite the pile-on in comments already after 24hrs- testament to the best show on the channel. This is always a fun exercise and I note someone would like to see the reverse (liking bands we really shouldnt). This task should stick to bands we probably should like based on our existing tastes, rather than punching downwards (ie HM fans hating Taylor Swift, Smiths, Coldplay) and avoid bands we find overrated, or those that aren't obvious bands we should like (er Nickelback et al). Some, may just blur so many lines, we still have to list them. I'm a day behind the curve so it's quite heartening seeing I'm not alone. So... Gentle Giant- I've observed previously that we have now swung the pendulum too far in reappraising them for the lack of love and appreciation 50 years ago. Glenn Hughes- yes he's recovered from adversity incredibly well, yes I can listen to him singing in DP, but I can't take the wailing that passes for singing from the dubiously enobled 'voice of rock'. I literally get exhausted after one listen of an album, solo, BCC. He just doesn't do it for me. Foo Fighters. No point being the nicest man in rock when the music is just this awful. Can't think of a single redeeming feature no matter how big the stadia they sell out. Absolutely baffling. Def Leppard. Listening to Tommy Vance in the demo's submitted by NWOBHM, they were always my least favourites ( Praying Mantis were my choice for stardom over Maiden). I just don't get them or their success, even allowing for what Mutt Lange brought as a producer. Certainly not an outlier when considered in SoT paradigm. Tygers, Mantis, Demon et al were always superior, and this baffles me as much as FF above. I'll never get them. District 97. I've tried, and gave up after first two albums. Bought the hype initially, but now seen through it. Smack of desperation bigging them up carries the leftover stench of fawning over Tales of Topographic Oceans. Or Steven Wilson. So many others qualify as overrated, as opposed to bands I should like but can't stand. Springsteen, Motorhead, Dream Theater, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Led Zep. Others not really in the paradigm, like Blur etc, hair metal bands Gobsmack moment Rory Gallagher- I get being underwhelmed by Live in Europe 72, or first two studio albums, but by blueprint, Tattoo, Grain, Calling Card, there are so many great songs and rockers, and a surprise Steven wouldn't take to Photo-Finish or Top Priority

A great show and while some of these comments may be shocking, nothing Simon says surprises me. Even though I agree with a couple of his choices. Total respect to anyone who can listen to an artist they aren’t keen on fairly and without prejudice. Very difficult to do. A good topic would be singers who ruin a band.

I get Simon's take on the Stones...the only stuff I like by them is their psychedelic pop phase (Between The Buttons/Satanic Majesties) and maybe a few tracks after....maybe. Getting told they were the greatest rock band ever all thru the 70's didn't help matters....they did not live up to the hype.

Yeah, not particularly good.

I'm not a fan of U2, Red hot Chillipeppers to names a few. I've tried Frank Zappa, but i just can't connect. Pantera is another I've tried, but not quite connected.

From the UK - like the Beatles - like odd songs by the Who & the Stones - but if I never hear either again I shall not miss them….

Remember buying the “Fight” album to give Rob some support. Played it once and threw it straight in the bin! Fool me once etc same thing happened with “2wo”. Third time was a charm with “Resurrection”.

Totally agree. It's pretentious "musical rock" and it just doesn't click with me. "Bohemian Rhapsody" especially is a song I never need to hear again.
