in the PC version each NPC has a unique portrait during conversation and it helps a lot with the sprite reuse thing

I really admire some of the things this game did. Ending it in a sensible way that pleases both sides is really inspired and the huge amount of depth NPC's have is something that really makes a game world feel alive. Even tons of games these days still don't do this and it adds so much to the world. These ideas are clearly ahead of their time and honestly that's still pretty true today. Risks in the gaming industry are becoming less and less common as the price of game-making increases and I wish it didn't feel so homogenized. I appreciate games from older generations for the very reason that so much experimentation took place. Great video!

Talking to the Shrines is prayer, something that is more obvious if you have approached U6 after playing U4. When I went back to the PC Version to finally finish it after 30 years I tried Use-ing the Shrines several times before remembering that you need to pray and say the mantra - would would be a talk command. Universal, context-specific one-button Interaction buttons like we have in games today certainly reduce the complexity but "Press A to Interact" is so much less cool than Talking to a shrine and entering the correct Mantra. At least for an old gamer like me. Good content -- subscribed.

I swear you breakdowns get better and better. It’s definitely made me look differently at retro and modern RPGs the commonalities and why some series have thrived and others barely made it out of the gate

Unbelievably good game but quite a pill to play, especially on SNES. Respect for plowing through. Playing it on PC is an experience I have not been able to fully re-create in 30 years.

you get a glass sword and smash a guard (if you WANT to), deal with some gypsies, collect stones, get some spider webs, make the lazy seamstress to make a balloon once you get the blueprints, get the pirates treasure for good measure, pass through the dungeon hythloth, say whats up to Sin Vraal, dont remember why, fly to a cave, talk to pushme pullyu at some point and the whole time you can only really have an idea of where you are by coordinates provided by a sextant and yeah....EZPZ....at least before the internet was a reliable thing, I had a whole notepad of random coordinates

PC Version is an all-time favorite of mine. Day/Night cycles, NPC schedules, completely open world -- can any other SNES RPG (besides U7) claim any of this? This game also calls back to IV and V, and elements of this game are resolved in Ultima VII. Quenton's murder discussed in U6 is never solved until 200 years later in U7. Britannia is a deep, deep game world but the NES and SNES versions just couldn't really provide the same continuity between games that the PC could.
@JasonGravesPoser3 жыл бұрын
I can think of plenty with day/night cycles, but nothing that does as much with NPCs. I guess we'll see as I keep going through them, though I hear Ultima 7 SNES is unfortunately a completely different game

As a fun side note, in the PC version you could pay to have sex with either the male or female gypsy, regardless of the Avatar's gender. Ditto for Ultima 7 and the baths in Buccaneer's Den.

Looks like Nintendo censored the sacrificing gargoyle catching a crossbow bolt through the skull from Iolo in the opening sequence, no surprise I guess considering the murdered victims in The Black Gate are now 'kidnapped' in the SNES version.....ah Ninty of the 90s. I don't miss that.

Had this game new(stupid expensive even for the crazy '90s) and thought highly of it at the time. First time in maybe five years I needed more than a week more than a MONTH to complete a game. Deeply, furtively, incongruously odd chinese checkers of a game. Oh, and your bag of items has a MASSIVE exploitable glitch that lets you obtain any item(and some that weren't even implemented?) that might happen even if you're not actively trying to do so lol. Only a freak that contributes to GameFAQs would go though the entire sodding thing, and me😅

i never could figure out what to do after befriending the gargoyles, given conversations went nowhere with most characters you talked with, and ultimately, felt this was the second time I got trolled by an ultima game. Beyond that, I had no idea which shrines were the best ones to power up your characters. This game was the second most horrible dumpster fire of an rpg i had ever played and was second only in awfulness to Ultima 3: Exodus for the nintendo. Thank goodness I fell in love with the superior Final Fantasy series.
