Hey as someone who is brand new to whiskey. pretty much have only tried a few. I have a bottle of some cheap bourbon and it’s kinda like I licked satans ass cheek…. What do you recommend to help get the burn down? Thank you in advance.
@strictlydiesel8305Ай бұрын
@@theserenitypodcast7570 honestly? Grab a bottle of something relatively low proof. I'll recommend Four Roses Yellow Label 80 proof. Every other day or so, pour yourself a bit of it into a glass. Smell it a bit (not a sniff, think like the smell from chemistry class. Soft inhale.) Write down anything you can think of to write down about that. Does it smell hot? Does it just smell like alcohol? Or is there more? Don't force it, just write what you get. Then sip just a little bit. Sip it like you're sipping a coffee that you know is gonna be hot but you're not sure HOW hot. Just a little little bit. Don't immediately swallow that, let it sit in your mouth a minute. Think about what you're tasting. Do the same thing you did with the smell. Write down what you got, even if that's just "heat." Write what you can about it down every time. Don't skip. If you don't like it at first, that's fine! We're looking for the day where you taste it and think "huh. That DOES have something there that reminds me of brown sugar" or something like that. Once you get there, congrats, now you've learned to look beyond the heat. It might take a little while though. If you're really wanting to try to get into this though, keep at it! I promise that day will happen. Might not even be in the first few WEEKS though.

Not op but if your new to bourbon try makers mark, it has a high amount of wheat in the mash bill making it a wheated bourbon. Wheated bourbons are generally more sweeter and great for use in cocktails like a old fashion or whiskey sour if you want to get acclimated to that burning feeling your talking about

As soon as he mentioned Tennessee whiskey I knew it was gonna be Old No 7. I drank so much of it when I was younger I gotta have something a little sweeter now.

I personally recommend benchmark. Despite its affordable price, it is made by Buffalo trace and has very similar flavor. Especially if you plan on using it to mix most people would probably believe you if you said you put Buffalo trace in it. I sold all of ours at the liquor store I work at.
@RoopeRontu199921 күн бұрын
Benchmark is really surprising to say the least; whenever there's a bottle, I'll take it. Sure, it's not a crème de la crème-bourbon, but it certainly works over when you want to see old friends and play hours of RDR while listening to Cadillac Moon in the background.

Good picks, but no nod to the latest category in American whiskey? The newly defined American Single Malt! You could grab a Balcones Lineage for 35, sub the OGD for Evan Williams Bib and still be within your budget. And all the while getting more variety.

Don't get me wrong - Jack Daniel's was pretty much the entirety of my Whisky journey for many years in and just out of college. That said, I think a bottle of that Buffalo Trace would be a better starting point. Keep the Larceny for a Wheater. Rather than a high Rye, just go with a Rye. Old Overholt is good, but Bulleit might be more the speed of a Beginner. Hard to go wrong with Rittenhouse BiB either. I'd round out the last $20 with some shooters from Four Roses, Maker's Mark, and Wild Turkey to get a sense of other distiller's profiles.

Buffalo trace is so hard to get in most markets so JD is a more realistic option imo

@@dinneratlunch There are literally BT bottles sitting over his shoulder. A year ago I would have agreed, but I'm seeing bottles sitting on shelves as much as not these days. Your reading way too much into "Bottled in Bond". All it really means is a whiskey produced in one season, from a single source (not blended), distilled in one distillery, and aged for 4yrs in a government approved warehouse. It maybe meant something when there was alot of dilution and adulteration going on, but today, it is hardly a mark of quality or really means anything significant. There are many many fine blended whiskeys.
