suggestion on the vent hole. instead of filling make 2 holes. then connect them on the outside of the bottle with a clear plastic or glass tube. you now have a fluid level indicator.

Excellent video series Sir. I am learning as you record :). I have a very similar 12 ton that I have adapted to my motorcycle lift in place of the smaller non-pneumatic assisted stock jack. I have not modified the jack in any way other than drill the foot to mount it to a pivot plate. The new jack position is laying on its side a about 3-5 degrees off horizontal, with the ram side on the up-end. In this position after bleeding I added fluid up to the plug. I hope this application continues to function with no problems as it initally has, I didn't know about the air gap needing to be evacuated and refilled and didn't think of it. Perhaps with the jack being on a small tilt up the air gap will expose some of the end cap interior and will still release air and not emit fluid. So far, no leak. Thanks again.

Ok, now I understand the purpose of the vent hole in the nut always wondered why is was there. So you have addressed the movement of air in the oil reservoir, what about the movement of air on the annulus side of the cylinder?
@TheAussieShed
@TheAussieShed 4 жыл бұрын
G'day Mate, any air in the cylinder will be purged back to the reservoir after the first release of the main release valve. No more air should be ingested into the cylinder after that, as long as the fluid level stays above the Dip Tubes. Cheers.
@markfryer9880
@markfryer9880 4 жыл бұрын
You may need to check the air cylinder to see if inverting it will cause problems with oil flowing where it shouldn't.

Great job on the whole series, thanks for sharing. I'm building a press from scratch and I'll be using most of your innovations. Working on the jack which is almost the same as yours. I found that the oil inlet port for the air pump was 1mm bigger than the port on the hand pump. I tapped the hand pump port to 6mm and the air pump port to 7mm. I'm using an aluminum dip tube with a 4mm id for both hand and air ports. My concern is I'm reducing the inlet port for the air pump from a little under 7mm down to 4mm. Based on your experience do think this will impact the performance of the jack?
@TheAussieShed
@TheAussieShed 3 жыл бұрын
G'day Rich, damn I sent a long detailed reply yesterday & it didn't show up. Anyhow, you should be fine, I've used my press a fair bit since completing it & no issues what so ever with the Inverted Air/Hydraulic Jack. 4mm in my opinion can & does Easily keep up with the required fluid volume. Good luck with it Mate, Cheers.

Have you considered how the modifications will affect the manual hand pump as normally you have to pull the handle down to force the ram up and on the up stroke the pump refills with fluid ready for the next down stroke. Does this mean that you will have to push the manual pump handle up to move the ram?
@TheAussieShed
@TheAussieShed 4 жыл бұрын
G'day Mate, good question. I'm pretty sure I address that issue in the next episode. I have made a new mount & reversed the Mechanism. It worked out really well. Nice Spotting. Cheers.

The Aussie Shed. Cool, I’m looking forward to the next instalment. I have a 20 ton shop press that was made here in Australia by J&B Wade in Ballarat VIC. It uses an inverted jack but I don’t know what all the required modifications were. The only reason I asked is because I was using mine last weekend and I happened to notice that the pump works on the down stroke even though the jack is inverted (so that used to be the up stroke) and wondered if it had to be modified to work like that. In my view your modifications are a very worthwhile exercise as my first press was the standard cheap setup with the upright jack and the moving frame. I found it frustrating as the play in the frame meant the ram could move around. Having the ram firmly mounted makes pressing work easier and more accurate as I’m sure you will find. Cheers Stuart, Canberra.

Invertered my jack which is the same as yours but it won't pump on the hand lever but is great on the air ,what have I missed out ,cheers
@TheAussieShed
@TheAussieShed 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to say Ken, could possibly be air trapped in the hand pump side. Give it a few pumps then release the valve, & repeat a few times, if it improves the issue you'll be good to go. From memory mine was a bit slow to bleed on the hand pump side, but once sorted its never needed any attention again. Good luck with it Mate, Cheers.
