My dad did too. During WWII he was assigned to VMF-211, the Wake Island Avengers, and at one point flew 20 missions in 5 days during the battle of Okinawa. Many years later he was asked to test fly a restored Corsair in Kalamazoo, but had to decline due to failing health. He felt he just wasn't safe to fly--a consummate pilot to the end. Thanks to your dad for his service.

The Corsair was fast and rugged. By 1944 with drop tanks it had a sufficient operating range. You don’t think the pilots of the Corsair would have adapted in the ETO and been successful? Of course it would have. That’s why the p47 was successful in the ETO. With that said the Japanese were a capable enemy. Hence why they captured almost all of the pacific early in the war. Also ask the marines who flew the Corsair early in 43’.

@@jacktattisthe Brits did pretty damn good with it before any US pilots climbed in the seat. They also taught us the best/safest way to land em on the deck of a carrier. But, like this vid says, the British operated em in the European Theater, the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Pacific Theater, and the Indian Ocean. But, failed in mentioning the Aussie pilots who flew with the Allies over SE Asia, the China Sea, French Indochina, and Burma. All suffered from very limited numbers of Corsairs though...which is perhaps why the airframe isn't talked or taught about more. They were still in service and flying when the Korean "Police Action" broke out, and the precursor of the Sky Raider's arrival in theatre to start performing fire support missions for the troops doin the fighting on the ground. Apologies for all the ratchet-jawing.

Had an uncle who flew the F4U1D off the USS Lexington as squadron commander of VBF94. He had 4 air victories and was awarded the Navy Cross for putting a 1000lb bomb down the stack of the Jap hybrid battleship aircraft carrier Ise at Kure harbor in July 1945. The bomb exploded the ships boilers and broke her keel. Ise settled into the mud as a useless hulk. She was later scrapped and no doubt turned into Toyotas and razorblades.

Finally, after waiting since I was a kid, I finally got to see a F4U Corsair not only fly but take pictures up close. I can now die a happy man! Took my kids to the Warhawk Air Museum Air Show in Nampa, ID last weekend where we saw three P-40 Warhawk's, three different P-51 Mustangs (including the Boise Bee), a P-38 Lightning, a B-25 Mitchell, some T-6's and torpedo bombers and of course the F4U Corsair. So glad I took my kids there to hear the 1940's music and watch these warbirds fly right over us.

Nice video. Minor point. At :42 second mark the company in 1938 was Vought Sikorsky (VS). In 1943 the name of the company changed to Chance Vought. Also we can't find any record that Igor Sikorsky had a part in the design of the F4U Corsair. At this time Igor Sikorsky had shifted his focus from flying boats e.g. S-38, S-42, S-43, S-44 etc. to the design and development of helicopters. Probably the best way to determine what plane was the best would be to listen to which plane the enemy feared the most. The Japanese were the only axis power to face virtually all the great fighters used by the allies including Spitfires and other British fighters in the far east; also they even faced some soviet planes in the last days of the war. According to Saburo Sakai the highest-scoring Japanese ace to survive the war (number three overall in Japan), he said the plane that the Japanese fighter pilots feared the most was the Corsair. He said he felt that he could safely speak for all the Japanese pilots. That's probably the most fair and accurate way to determine what plane was the best. Now for those who will continue to say the air corps had the best plane, then one would have to conclude that Navy/Marine pilots are by far the best. It was the Marine Corps, at first being the sole user of the plane, who began the great reputation of the Corsair.

My wife has been researching my family history. Traced our relations in the US to the early 18th century Told me this morning she had found a cousin of my father who was a Major in the USMC. Flew Corsairs. Sadly he was reported missing in action over Bougainville, Papua New Guinea during Operation Cartwheel, 1943. My grandfather was born in Newburgh New York. Came back to fight in WW1 with the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers. His reward for surviving Gallipoli was to be sent to the Western Front. We are a family, originally from the Scottish Borders Just made me realise how intertwined our history is. Especially now, we need to keep that bond.

2:28 and 8:53 Very interesting. If you look really close, you can see the type of ammunition they are loading into that left wing is not the 50 Cal, it is the much larger 20mm that was used on later Corsairs. You can also see the end of those massive 20mm barrels sticking out from the left wing too. That footage there has to be from the Korean War and that Corsair is probably the -5 "Dash Five" version. Does anybody know, are those probably the Pontiac 20mm rotary type cannons that were later put into the Northrop F-5?

What I have heard about the aircraft changing from a three to a four-prop propeller was twofold. It was added to the most advanced WASP engine modifications for more speed and stability and two prevented propeller strikes then landing and nose tipping forward striking the carrier decks and runways. If anyone heard more or different, I am all ears.

The F8F Bearcat was just beginning to be sent into fleet service when the war ended. She saw mo action in WWII. Fast and highly maneuverable she was the ultimate combination of the powerful double wasp engine crammed into the smallest airframe possible. It was slow notoriously unstable at low speeds and resulted in several fatal nose over low speed, low altitude accidents during instrument landings and low visibility landings.

Few aircraft have such a long production run as the Corsair. Certainly no fighters had such a long run until the jet age, and only such workhorses as the A-1 and A-26 had a service life as long. For piston-engined aircraft dating from WW2, I can't think of a single plane that had such a long PRODUCTION run as the Corsair, from '42 to '52 plus. I think they may have been in production through '55 for smaller contracts for ground attack? (Obviously, it wasn't produced as a fighter after WW2. It was a ground attack beast like the P-47) Correct me if I'm wrong on the dates, please. But the amazing fighters of WW2, like the P-38, 51, 47, F6F had their production ended immediately at the end of that war. The Corsair lived on and was still in production for over 5 years after WW2. THAT is testament to the Corsair.

Well, we are all entitled to our opinions, but it’s helpful if those opinions are based on facts. In 1943 fly off tests an F4u-1 (early birdcage model) completely outflew the P-51B (slightly faster than the more famous D) in direct fly off tests. To quote the review board “the F4U was everywhere more maneuverable than the P-51” Only in regards to dive speed and a slight advantage in level speed above 25,000 did the P-51 outperform the Corsair. In 1944 the Navy conducted a series of tests between the F4U-1D and F6F-3. Conclusion? The F4U was found to be a better overall fighter, a better aircraft for carrier operations and a significantly more versatile aircraft with it’s significant advantage in ground attack and ability to act as a first rate dive bomber. The board’s recommendation was to immediately begin to phase out the F6F in favor of the F4U. This was begun but fully implemented before the war ended. In Europe, the F4U faced a number of fly off tests , where it again was the overall superior aircraft. It was flown against P-47, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, etc. The closest overall competitor was the FW-190, but again the overall winner was the Corsair. Sorry, but these are not opinions but actual results from actual tests done in the real world.

The wing design was for aerodynamic efficiency, not ground clearance for the prop. Shorter struts, some extra ground clearance etc. were by products of the inverted gull wing. The Hellcat used the same diameter prop, 13' 1" without the inverted gull wing. The F6F-6 Hellcat turned a 4 bladed prop of some 13' 4" diameter without lengthening the struts.

The only set back with the Corsair and P47D Thunderbolt , even though they had the same power plant , was that the P47D Thunderbolt was built like a "tank" . It could take a lot of punishment, have multiple cylinders shot out and still get the pilot safely home. The Corsair didn't have the protective armor that the P47D Thunderbolt had, which gave it a greater range.

It had the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 engine, with over 3,000 hp in the Corsair application. It was a great idea, but top speed wasn't improved enough to really make it worth it. Climb rate was significantly improved, though. The idea was that it would protect the fleet from kamikaze attacks. The F8F Bearcat, with the same engine as the regular Corsair, offered similar performance.

Fans of any aircraft will always consider their favorite "the best". The F4U was a fine aircraft and effective but doesn't look impressive when it's combat record is compared to others. The top five American aces flew P-38's (Bong and McGuire), P-47's (Gabreski and Johnson) and the F6F. An argument can be made for any of those aircraft. The P-47 did the same job in Europe as the Corsair did in the Pacific. Ground attack, Fighter escort, and Light bomber. One of the main reasons that the P-51 and F4U didn't produce any of the top five aces is that by the time they were deployed lesser aircraft had already established air superiority and they found fewer targets. The F6F got a break by being there for the Turkey Shoot where it faced half trained pilots.

And there were planes in the west that were better G/A planes RAF Typhoon Tempest Mustang Spitfire [ in a pinch] USAAF A36 P51 even the P47 [ But not low low] No radial engine powered plane was as good down low as the In-line Liquid Cooled Planes which were faster at sea level

@@jacktattishold on did you just say that the mustang and spitfire were better than the Corsair in ground attack, that’s just absurd. The only planes in that category are the thunderbolt and typhoon. Even still the Corsair was easily the most effective out of them all. The P47 and Typhoon were highly ineffective and required massive amounts of ordnance to even come close to a target because of the rockets they used. The Corsair on the contrary played a massive role in victories in peleliu (I can’t spell sorry), Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. The Corsair was just a much better attack plane than really any other fighter. It had the heaviest bomb load, carried the most effective weaponry (tiny tims, napalm, and massive bombs to name a few), and was just deployed more effectively compared to the western theater of operations were attack planes were really ineffective with there actually destruction being a fraction of what it was said to be. Also radial engines were much more effective at low altitudes on average. Most radial designs were optimized for medium to low altitudes. Corsairs, 190s, hellcats, la 5s, la 7s, almost every Japanese planes. The radial was a much better option at low altitudes because it was a on average more powerful and more reliable option

@@jacktattis wow great you do not bring up any facts about their usefulness at all. The area they cover means absolutely nothing. The methods of cas the planes used was awful. The spitfire could carry absolutely nothing. The typhoon and p51 are the only relevant cas options here. However the P51 could only carry 8 Hvars and 2 1,000 pound bombs and the typhoon really only carried RP3s which are very inaccurate. Vs the absolute CAs god the F4U which could carry more than a B17 internally could on short missions. The F4U has more sorties than almost all aircraft in ground attack, except the P47. The F4U was just used at a much higher rate and much more effectively with cas being more needed in battle it fought. Hell the Corsair dropped 70% of the bombs the USA fighters dropped and considering that the USA used bombs more than the British, that means the Corsair dropped the vast majority of the bombs by fighters from the western allies. The square mileage means absolutely nothing. And if we’re speaking about range the only plane up there that has a better range is the mustang. Looks like the in lines are completely out classed. Considering the two most effective G/A aircraft were radials

Nope, that's a myth, there were already carrier qualified F4U units like VF-17 and VF-12 very early on that even qualified with the original birdcage canopy F4U, VF-17 was even shipped out on the USS Bunker Hill for the Solomon Islands Campaign with F4U's, however upon stopping at Pearl Harbor to take on provisions VF-17 was informed that ComAirLand (the Navy's department in charge of all Naval aircraft) deemed the F4U unfit for carrier service due to maintenance and spare parts issues, something Tommy Blackburn, the commander of VF-17, knew was likely even after they'd departed from Norfolk on the Bunker Hill, him and his guys in VF-17 loved the F4U and were even who worked directly with Vought to improve it during their time in early 1943 while qualifying in the Chesapeake Bay on the converted steamship Charger resulting in the F4U-1A, in his words the biggest problem with the F4U was that it was "over engineered" leading to half of their F4U's always being deadlined, a problem that was compounded with the fact that there was a lack of qualified maintenance crews and spare parts. The issues with landing the F4U on carrier's is something that's been grossly exaggerated over the year's, the Navy never "came close to giving up" on the F4U nor did they pull it from carrier service because they couldn't land them on carrier's, it was simply pulled because an overly complicated aircraft that has spare parts shortages and lacks qualified maintenance crews isn't the wisest choice for a carrier borne aircraft, especially when they had the much simpler and easier to maintain F6F being produced in greater numbers, they never gave up on it they simply designated it as a land based fighter at the time, like VF-17 who at Pearl Harbor on the way to the Solomon Islands Campaign were unloaded from the Bunker Hill and replaced with an F6F squadron, they were then loaded onto another carrier that transported them to the Solomon's where they occupied an airstrip on the island of Espiritu Santo. After only 76 days of combat VF-17 emerged the most successful F4U unit in history with 154.5 aerial victories credited and another 27 probable's along with another 25 damaged. The reason that the Navy returned F4U's to carrier service was because in June of 1944 the Japanese launched their Kamikaze campaign, it was decided that the F4U with it's 4,200 ft per minute rate of climb that was superior to the F6F's 3,600 ft per minute rate and faster speed would be used to launch as a first wave to intercept incoming Kamikaze's with F6F's launching behind them to intercept any that made it through the F4U's. With the F6F's 19 to 1 kill to loss ratio it's silly to think that the Navy had been chomping at the bit for over a year to replace it with the F4U and it's 11 to 1 kill to loss ratio, had it not been for the Kamikaze's and the need for a fighter with the fastest climb rate available to act as an interceptor for them the F4U probably never would have been reinstated for carrier service, the Navy was perfectly happy with the way things were until the Kamikaze campaign was a game changer in that regard, and they didn't need the British or anyone else to show them how to land the F4U on carrier's, that's a myth created by British aviation writer's eager to sell books who knew printing that would be something their target audience would want to hear and cause a sensation with them, like most other long standing WW2 myths created by rumors, misinterpretation's or just plain someone taking credit for something they shouldn't that one doesn't stand up to facts, there's not one bit of evidence to support it beyond "We say so", there's no records of any US Navy fliers being sent somewhere to be trained by the British, no testimony from Navy fliers or any kind of evidence for it whatsoever beyond claims, like Andy Rooney's famous WW2 article in Stars and Stripes magazine while he was assigned to the 8th Air Force as a war correspondent about the ball turret gunner who was ground into hamburger during a wheels up emergency landing of a B17 it's not true, and like it it's proof that just because something made it into print doesn't mean it actually happened.

I have a trivia question I don't know the answer to. Was the Corsair the first and last aircraft PRODUCED with the R-2800? I'm not talking about service life - I'm talking factory production. It's known as the first one to use the R-2800, but was it also the last? More knowledgeable folks are welcome to leave me an answer. EDIT: It was not. The answer surprised me! But have fun with it.
