In the early 80's my mate spent a long weekend trekking on the Oliphants past Middleburg. Local head man invited us on a baboon hunt. Young lad woke us before sunrise and we joined the men and some very excited dogs being muzzled by hand. The baboons were grazing the maize field when the pie-dogs were released. Baboons took off, females legging it whilst the males, bayed by the dogs, took the rearguard. No bullets, just dogs to bay and knobkerries to whack them. I was too busy laughing to properly join in, but we helped carry 7 big baboons back into the village. Declined the headman's kind offer to join in the feast that night, and kept on trekking 🙂

Once during a hunt I went to take a piss and, lo and behold, while in the midst of it, the biggest Chamois I've ever seen stepped out from behind a large rock, 50 m in front of me. And my rifle was 15m away. Never got that one. And a year later another hunter got it. Since that day my rifle is never more than an arm's length from me. You gotta learn the hard way, but at least it sticks.

My former wife's uncle was taking a leak once while deer hunting , with his rifle rested against the tree of which he was whizzing to the other side, when a black bear strolled out about 15 yards away from him. It apparently stopped him mid-stream, he picked up the rifle, shot the bear, and then carried-on with his business once his body relaxed a bit. No trophy, to be sure, but made a nice rug and great story nevertheless.

That rifle is sick dude. That carbon fiber barrels looks accurate enough at 300m

Carbon fiber barrels are just as accurate per diameter as their full steel brothers... the difference is that the carbon ones weigh less for hunting applications, and just don't have the ability to hold zero for long strings of sustained fire , say 10-15 rounds in quick succession like at a PRS match. But for 2-5 shots in a hunting scenario, they'll hold a consistent group. You could shoot a carbon barrel at 900m in F-class, but you'd have to use the whole time allotment (~20 minutes) to shoot 12-15 shots without heating up your barrel.

Howzi, Piet. Baie goeie skiet. I'm from CT originally. In the 70s a group us us went down to Olifantsbos in the Cape Point reserve to dive for kreef and perlemoen, and to have a braai. When we got back to the cars after diving, the baboons had raided. One of the guys had a soft top car. The baboons has ripped open the top, torn open the back seat, and taken all their braai kos from the boot. Big Steve, East Yorkshire , England.

How do you like the carbon fiber barrel? I have four carbon barrels, one Christensen and three Proof. The one Proof I have on my 338 and in slow motion the barrel looks like something out of the exorcist, and the flyer has to do with timing of the screwing of the barrel and bullet leaving. The un-screwing of the barrel, and I fixed the problem by put an external carbon tube with carbon washers for support.

Pieter, have you ever considered using a thermal drone to search for the downed kills that are tricky to find? I'm not sure what the legalities are for using it in SA are though - in the US, some states allow it and others don't from what I know. I use mine to find animals for wildlife photography, but haven't used it on a hunt yet.

I do wonder Piet if with a decently large ie good range drone, whether you could haze them down the slopes closer to you, bugger off for a bit before shooting so they don't associate the drone with gunshots, or the drone is used to distract the lookouts to let you move closer or quicker? Worth thinking about and if nothing else you get some good footage or the drone hunts them away fromthe crops regardless. Of course they could start ignoring the drone mostly and let you get very close for epic footage. (Thock!)
