The period of this anime is from the end of the Kamakura period to the Muromachi period. In a broad sense, it's the Muromachi period. Muromachi is Kyohto. And Kyohto is currently in the middle of a festival. (There are about 300,000 festivals in Japan, big and small, above all summer is the season for festivals) So this time I'd like to introduce a little the Gion Festival (Kyoto), one of the three biggest festivals in Japan. The Gion Festival is a month-long festival that starts with the "Kippu Iri" (meaning : starting ceremony of the Shinto ritual) on July 1st and ends with the Ekijinja Nagoshisai (This is a festival to purify one's body and mind, also the sins, impurity and exhaustion of the past six months, and to pray for a healthy and energetic life through the hot summer and ended safely of the festival) on the 31st. Its origins date back to the Heian period, when 66 Hoko floats were erected to welcome the Mikoshi (portable shrine) of Yasaka Shrine in order to ward off evil spirits that were spreading in Kyoto. The highlight of the Gion Festival is the "Yamahoko Junko," also known as a "moving art museum." 23 Yamahokos will participate in the "Saki Matsuri" on July 17th, and 11 Yamahokos will participate in the "Ato Matsuri" on the 24th. Also the Yamahoko is not used by nails and they are assembled using traditional rope tying techniques. Also there is a unique Yamahoko called Tohrohyama (meaning mantis yama) with a praying mantis on the roof. Its origins date back to the Nanboku-cho period, when the fighting style of Shijo Takasuke (1292-1352), who recklessly challenged the army of Ashikaga Yoshiakira and died in battle, was likened to the "praying mantis's axe." Also This Hoko is the only one that has a mechanism between the mantis and the wheel. In Japan, the "praying mantis's axe" has a double meaning, meaning not only "useless struggle," but also the spirit of risking one's life to protect obligations, human feelings, pride, and dignity.
