Bourbon folks tend to focus on the proof on the bourbon (higher the better to most enthusiasts) , where is was distilled (making sure if in house or sourced juice (MGP)), mash bill, and toast level of the barrel and where it was within the Rickhouse. These four/five items help us know the type of proof we are buying, where the juice is from, what it's made up of and what it's housing environment was for aging process. For all of these will dramatically change the flavor and intensity of the baseline and complimentary notes.

Hi Geoff, showing off all those Kilkerrans, eh? As for the Rare Breed: would love to try it! Have been looking for a bottle for months now, but it’s unobtainable here in Holland. Maybe someday…

I'd be very interested to see how this one lands for you. Do you normally get along with bourbon?
@wouterblom75696 ай бұрын
Well, I am a single malt lover foremost, but I do occasionally dabble with Bourbon. The odd indie bottling of Heaven Hill for instance. Or single cask Four Roses. Good, but not great. Sometimes I watch videos on YT about Bourbon, but usually the ‘winners’ and the interesting stuff are kept on the other side of the pond. It’s like having to judge the whole category of Scotch single malt by only getting Glenfiddich and Glenlivet 12yo. Difficult to give a fair opinion!

The beginning caught me off guard but I loved it 😂. Rare breed is probably the best value bourbon in the world. It is one of the few that is priced very well anywhere you can find it. As a US person who enjoys Scotch more than bourbon, I find Rare Breed to be exceptional for the price, as are most WT products. Still, the various distilling regions of Scotland, each with unique signature flavors, present more layered experiences. It will be interesting to follow the development of American single malts.

That is actually a good idea, Geoff reviewing an American single malt. The only problem I see is the really limited distribution overseas of such bottles. The ones that come up to my mind: Balcones, Westward, Westland (oloroso is great). I need to try Cedar Ridge as well.... choices, choices

Great review Geoff! I did a side by side of this and the regular bottling and I really couldn't tell them apart, both lovely drams with plenty of body. In terms of what I look for on a bourbon label, an age statement is nice to see. The regular Wild Turkey 101 I'm sure specifies it's made up of 6-8 year old bourbon and I appreciate that level of transparency.

From talking to some scotch drinkers who tried bourbon what they told me was that they found it to be kind of brash and having really long finishes. A lot of spice and vanilla with some oak mixed in. Bourbon used to be a value proposition but now it’s almost as expensive as scotch. They’re also beginning to do the $10 a year for price.

I started back on my whisky journey with bourbon a few years ago before moving into Scotch. Jim Beam and Wild Turkey mostly but also tried Old Forester, Makers Mark, Buffalo Trace, and Bulleit. I prefer scotch over bourbon. However, WT101 is my favourite bourbon with Rare Breed coming in second. The 50.5% ABV of the 101 is just right for me and I find it a nice balanced bourbon. The higher ABV of the Rare Breed is too much for me and I have to add water, and it is considerably more expensive. I've also had the WT Rye (40.5% ABV) which was OK but there are better Ryes out there. Cheers!

I love Bourbon. I also love Scotch. On average I think a Bourbon is usually more enjoyable compared to a Non peated or Smokey scotch. As generally most scotch sits below 95 proof and I usually prefer my whiskey at around 110 proof. Also a typical bourbon is just better than a Single Malt Scotch that was aged in used bourbon barrels. As those scotches usually just have a very strong malted cereal grain note with maybe some vanilla maybe some light caramel. While I think a typical bourbon can be a lot more complex since it can use any number of grains to be made as long as it's 51% corn, and those other grains just add to the complexity of bourbon. However Scotch aged in basically anything else or finished in any type of other barrel is just as good as most bourbons if not better than your average bourbon. Because the wine finished Or other Liquor finished stuff in Scotch just adds a ton to it. I think both are different enough though that at the end of the day I couldn't pick which I enjoy more as each has amazing things they do. On my all time best pours I've ever had I have more bourbons than Scotch, but I also have a lot of Japanese stuff too lol Yeah both are great and I think you should try more bourbons especially stuff like Single Barrel picks, and the other more rare and sought after stuff in bourbon 🤓 And peated or Smokey scotches are just their own wonderful thing lol there's even some bourbons that are finished in barrels that held peated scotch or bourbon and peated scotch blends out there that are awesome

I'm a Yank whose philosophy is "why spend my money on bourbon when I can spend it on Scotch", but even though bourbon has never fully appealed to me, I do intend try this one someday when I see it on a restaurant menu to see if it lives up to the hype. It could just be that corn mash isn't my thing. I'll either like it or be convinced to never spend money on bourbon again. Kind of hoping for the latter, tbh, I really don't need to expand my whisky budget any more in these inflationary times. Cheers!

As I commented in your OSWA awards vid, it's strange that Rare Breed has become the overseas darling. (Haven't tried this intl version but told no dif). It has to come down to availability. You're not getting the limited rels from Elijah Craig, Four Roses, Wilt Turkey, Buffalo Trace, Michter's, Old Forester, Larceny, etc. etc. Rare Breed hasn't won or been recognized for anything in years. Yes, it's very good and a standard on the shelf but there's nothing super spl about it. As for Star Trek, my wife decided a month ago that we would watch the entire original series (she never saw it). I have, so I''ve watched a few but try to pop in whenever Kirk's gettin busy w the natives.
