I have been carying a Huntsman for 40 years and I have always said it is the best little knife to have with you when camping. You are the first person to say in a video that the parcel hook is great for pulling tent pegs, which is exactly what I use it for, primarily. I found that out on a cold morning camping in the Eastern townships of Quebec 40 years ago :) Nice video bro!

I use the toothpick for cleaning in-between the layers of my swiss army knives. It's the ideal size for getting inside and cleaning lint and bits out of the knife.

I use toothpick between my teeth every time after meal, i don't know why everyone says it worthless or use it for other tasks, sometimes i use it to pick a food from a sharing plate or bowl.

Love Swiss Army Knives, I’ve had one in my pocket for over 40 years. The tweezers and corkscrew can be used as a “cigarette” holder…ahhh the 70’s…LOL. I went nuts when I saw a video last year about the tiny pinhole! I dug through my stuff to find an older knife. No pin hole, so I don’t know when they put it there. I tried to find a sewing needle to fit but couldn’t. So like you, I got the “official” pin for my several knives. The tip about wrapping a needle in thread and hiding it under one of the tools is pretty slick! As for the corkscrew, I don’t drink wine but other people do. I saved a party once by pulling out my corkscrew!

A #5 entomological pin is a superior and cheaper replacement/substitute for the 0.7mm diameter Victorinox pin in a SAK scale. The stainless entomological pin is identical diameter, but has a larger head, is longer, is less likely to bend and still fits well. FWIW I have carried one SAK or another for over 40 years. the Climber or Huntsman are ideal EDC.

I've got the fieldmaster because i prefer the Philips screwdriver rather than the corkscrew. Instead of a pin i put a small needle in the hole because it is more useful. I've also got the knipex cobra 125 pliers which are small and light and are a great companion to the victorinox and can perform better than any multi tool pliers

red Victorinox Huntsman was bought to me by my father in Switzerland in 1994. the knife still works without any problems, I just bought the original accessories for the knife. Red Victorinox Lanyard 4.1824.1 , Replacement Mini Screwdriver A.3643 . Last week I bought a new blue Victorinox Huntsman to my wife, cost 23 €, she will use it mainly as a knife to collect mushrooms from the forest.

Another good use for the cork screw is to extend out the reach of the saw or blade by attaching to a branch. Several good KZbin videos on it. I rotate between the Huntsman and Farmer X. Really like the Alox scales on the Farmer and the awl/leather punch location is better. Miss the tooth pick and tweezers though of the Huntsman which I find myself using often. Keep up the wild camping, enjoy your videos.

You can screw the corkscrew into a tree and use it a a hanger to keep your coat off the ground.

Another cool tip for trickin out your huntsman is a.needle wrapped in thread and tuck it under the saw blade in the scales it fits perfectly

I didn't know about that pin hole. I inserted one in it. Thanks! The bottle opener has a tiny groove for cutting wires, there is also a smaller groove on the body that corresponds to the groove on the bottle opener.

You can sharpen the wire stripper with a small round file, to make it a little nicer, as they come rather dull from the factory.

Nice video. The little three mm slotted screwdriver on the tip of the can opener is also a two dimensional Phillips Head screwdriver, which I've successfully used on occasion. Also, the hole in the awl allows it to be used for sewing. There are good videos about this, and I've found the technique useful for repairing/connecting heavy things like straps.

Get a set of the small or extra small knipex pliers. They compliment a victorinox well. They will do a lot more then a leatherman will only run about $30 ish dollars. The hardened steel jaws grip anything and they easily fit in a small belt pouch or even a pocket and weigh next to nothing. I have a skinth pouch which is kinda a leatherman pouch but better and it holds the knipex victorinox and a light on my belt or even my waist band and you can do pretty much anything with the 3 of them. Great video.

I've been using the Huntsman for the past half year as an EDC multitool, I recently upgraded it with plus scales. I also tried Compact, but Huntsmanmi is the best. It is useful in urban tasks as well as when I go to nature. At the beginning, it was a bit big for me to carry a knife with 4 rows, but over time I got used to not even noticing it in my pocket anymore. It will definitely continue to be my EDC. I filled the lack of pliers with Knipex Cobra 125 :)

Farmer or Pioneer both tried and tested over and over. A little more expensive for ALOCS in silver but there is a red version exclusive to a supplier and it’s very nice. The small blade is an excellent ‘Whittler’ if you’re into that. Don’t underestimate the saw blade either it’s very good. In U.K. no one was ever arrested for possession of a SAK which is another excellent reason why I like it. Keep the main blade sharp, that’s the trick to longevity of the knife. It’ll be of use to you all the time then and you won’t abuse it. Some of the minis are really cute too, not much use to be honest but great little gadgety type thingys. I have a few I just couldn’t resist buying. Enjoy your SAK’s and good luck.

I found the small blade very useful for when I need a really clean cut. I use my main blade a lot. It's not always razor sharp but I always keep my secondary blade super sharp. It works as a utility knife type thing.

Love your content dude you are killing it. But remember 2 is 1 & 1 is non, if you lose 1 or break 1 you have non, so always have a back up blade. The opinal No.6 or 7 is a cheap high carbon blade with a sharp spine for striking, it's light weight you can forget its on your person or in your pack until needed. The pin will be good for when you have cooked up some winkles by the coast, they are buggers to get to without opening my sewing kit, I love them it's like eating boogers!

I'm the same when using conventional sharpening tools I hold the blade at the wrong angle or all over the place so I tend to use ones that are idiot proof as they sharpen blades at the same angle every time the best one I ever found is made by sharpal as is also a small survival multitool as well as knife sharpener

The Victorinox Handyman has saw and pliers but is heavier (and more money). Personally I chuck a Knipex Mini in my pack with the Huntsman if I think I’ll need them. Great little set of pliers. Great video!

( 7:05 spot ) The Swiss Champ has a pin in the exact same spot. The Ferro Rod , I use it by pulling back on the rod , this way I don't brush the tinder I'm trying to light. I also have the Helix Tinder in the corkscrew and a miniature Firefly Ferro rod ( from Tortoise Gear ) where the toothpick goes. I have them as emergency ( backup ) fire starters if they ever are needed.

Yeah I should get into the habit of pulling back on the ferro rod. I've messed up many times by knocking over my tinder pile haha. Using this as a camping multitool I think its a good idea to add those little fire starting accessories.. Really completes the package!

Also: There is a small notch on the cap lifter blade...it's a wire stripper. And notice that there is a hole in the awl. That's so you can sew with it.

Hey again, great video! I have the wave+, i cant say good enoth. The best things have to be the warranty and build quality. That said, i think the best tool is the one you got on you. If you like the light wieght stick too your Huntsman. The wave is lighter but still, needs a sheath. You can change out the componants on the Leatherman, thats a pluss but to be honest. There are times i miss my old Victorinox, that i grew up with. Good times ;)

I have the Leatherman Wave. It’s a fine tool. But to be honest, if you don’t use the pliers, it’s kind of heavy to carry, you definitely feel the weight, and it’s kind of bulky (no fault to the tool, it’s definitely heavy-duty) If you don’t mind the weight, then it’s a great tool. The blade clicks into place which is nice. But to be honest I think the Hunstman hits the perfect balance between weight, size and functionality. I bought the huntsman after, and I prefer the Hunstman for bushcraft since it’s very compact and can fit right in your pocket. The Wave I mainly use around the house.

I normally use a neck knife a large knife a saw and my axe(I run round thinking I'm braveheart with my axe , I love it.) never considered a multi tool knife before but watching your vid has kind of changed my mind . I put my fire out before by dropping my pot due to not having a decent hook also my dog goes everywhere I do so ticks are a concern the tweezers would help . hi bro, dropped my water this morning spent ages processing wood getting everything ready and then spill all my boiled water all over myself, good job I wasn't wearing shorts. I put fire out yesterday due to dropping pot . seeing you baton with it was quite impressive so I will get one. I want to get the mora knife you have I have a gerber knife but I feel blade is a little small . my axe isn't a expensive one it's a carbon fibre camping axe from dewalt it weighs 567 grams (which is a funny number) I always buy a cheapish tool to see if its what I want , I'll use it for a bit and if I get on with it I'll then go and buy a expensive one so my cheaper one then becomes a half decent spare. your other video about leaving a valuable piece of kit behind would you consider doing a poll were by your subscribers choose which kit you leave out . take care bro , enjoy your Sunday , peace.

hi bro, yeah , still learning at least I've stopped chopping myself with my axe I would lose a couple of pints of blood every time I went away for a couple of weeks but getting competent with it now love using it. yeah multiple choice thing that would be cool. I personally don't think you would struggle but I do think it would be really interesting how you navigate around certain bits of kit being taken out the mix . we all forget stuff and a lot of the time it's an essential piece of kit ,but it doesn't have to be a disaster and to show people that with a bit of confidence and lateral thinking it could turn out to be a really good experience , pushing the boundaries and adapting . by the way I saw you using a oex phoxx 2 in one of your vids I bought one a few months ago to see what they were like I stayed in it a couple of times and then and it's sitting in a cupboard and probably will do for years , if yours is damaged in anyway I'll happily send you mine (which is perfect) I know you would actually use it so it's yours if you want it bro I can send to your nearest post office anyway look forward to voting in your poll , take it easy bro,peace.

I cut a tiny piece of q-tip stick and jamed it down in the groove under the parcel hook. It raises it just enough to be able to open it without needing assistance from the toothpick.

So, a huntsman is a fieldmaster with a corkscrew instead of a Philips screwdriver. I just got my new fieldmaster today. Looking forward to putting it through its paces. Edit: Got a Huntsman now. my fiance now has a Fieldmaster. 😅 When winter arrives i wear a necklace made of cord with a bic lighter, ferro rod and an Alox Farmer clipped to it. Always have the means of cutting and fire starting.

Hi Dazzy, I don't know if anyone has already mentioned it in the comments, but the Victorinox Handyman includes pliers and a few other tools. The only downside is that it's a bit heavier. I bought one from Koch & Kochin for £44 if that helps. All the best. As always, great informative content.

The Ranger model quit beats it out of the water. It's the same but comes with a chisel and a file. So to craft some little things out of wood it's really great to have this extra for just a small layer more.

I have the Explorer because I wanted the magnifying glass, didn't need a saw as I have one on my Leatherman Charge. I can recommend the Leatherman Squirt if you need a decent pair of pliers for small tasks. I keep mine attached to my keys so have it on me all the time, weighs nothing, and would be a good backup for your SAK.

Can’t agree more, especially about the scissors. They’re less “bushcraft cool” than an axe or a chainsaw, but you can’t even cut your nails without them. And they’re probably the only “surgical instrument” you’re likely use in the field. Plus, this Victorinox i SO less bulky and heavy than a Leatherman…

Dude Im happy you love your huntsman like I do. Mine has camo scales. You showed me where to put a pin... I didn't know. And... I can tell you that you missed a feature. There is a wire stripper thingy on the bottle opener / 6mm flathead. I have used it successfully but there are not many occasions where it could be utilized. Keep it up you seem to have the formula for success.

@@DazzyOutdoors Happy Monday, I have 10 in all, 4 with collectable decorative scales unused in my collection & 6 others for EDC consisting of 5 with Plus scales in different colors all fitted with the SwissQlip for convenient pocket carry & all decked out with Fire Ant ferro rods & tinder spirals or the Firefly ferro rod in place of the toothpick & on the corkscrew I have the mini-screwdriver holding down the tinder spiral & the 10th Huntsman has SilverTech scales, its not fitted with a SwissQlip but is decked out with a Fire Ant & tinder spiral. My alternate carries to the Huntsman with a similar range of the 3 main tools ( blade, saw & scissors ) are the 93mm Alox Farmer X , the 85mm EvoGrip S17 , the 85mm Wenger Forester ( Mk.1 version ) & the 111mm Outrider ( which I keep in reserve for use in an emergency ).The Huntsman is still one of the top selling SAK's of all time along with my other favorites for EDC - the 91mm Climber, the 93mm Pioneer X , the 91mm Spartan, the 84mm Sportsman, the 84mmTourist, the 111mm Picnicker/Nomad, the 111mm Forester/Rucksack . I would love to have a Vitorinox with the big blade (the 4 inch one), the saw, scisors, the owe, cork tool, can opener and a magnifier. That little magnifier is basic for outdoors and survival, you can get a nice fire quickly using a permanent source of energy. I would ditch the flathead/prybar/bottle opener and the philips screwdriver (in my case it comes with one) for the magnifier. I always carry a big knife, but a 4 inch blade is perfect to prepare a fish or cut meat... bottles can be opened with virtually anything, screws are not part of what I will be touching out in the wilderness and if I really need thin metalic prybar, I can use a big knife or any other thing that ressembles one. Vitorinox has to make a big knife for survival that invludes a magnifier lens.

Great video, I am lost without my Victorinox, or as I call it my MacGyver knife. One thing that is on there too, if you wasn't aware of it, the wire strippers on the large screwdriver blade. They also make on with a pair of plyers as well, but I am not certain if it has a say on it. -Tony

There are currently 3 models with pliers that I know of (although there are a few more discontinued models like Mechanic etc) and those are Deluxe Tinker, Handyman and Swisschamp. Handyman and Swisschamp all have saws, as well as scissors and files.

Agreed mate, been using one for years, best combination of tools for the size and weight out there I think. You can get 91mm plus scales and add a pen as well if you want. Been eyeing up the victoriox outrider, same tools with a bigger locking blade. Don't think it's uk legal edc carry though.

Just ordered a Huntsman as an upgrade from the Walker, the scissors are useful for keeping nails trimmed as well which is important for me on multiday trips. Would like to add the FireFly ferro rod in place of the toothpick but they are stupidly expensive shipped from the UK, and the Victorinox FireAnt kit is poor VFM compared to the Tortoise Gear one which has double the number of ferro rods in it. IMO the Leatherman Wave is too heavy for this type of use, I have one for work (IT, also keep a bit kit with it) and it lives in my laptop bag. Also the Wave has locking blades so is rather less pocket friendly than an SAK - technically it isn't UK legal carry "without good reason" in the eyes of the law hence why I keep it in my bag and an SAK in my pocket.

Huntsman is a great tool considering the price and the size. Best upgrade to it is Rangerwood 55 which is bigger, less tools for the sake simplification and way more durability.

A Leatherman Bond would compliment this perfectly and they're UK legal. It's an old school design and more or less the same as the original Leatherman, the PST1 from the 80s. It has a good solid pair of pliers, a knife blade which is non locking, a good file, a lobster claw can opener, solid proper Phillips screwdriver and I believe a couple of flatheads. If you shop around you can get them for around £50. Looking to buy one to complement my Victorinox Farmer X. Combined the cost of them is still under £100 so cheaper than a LM Wave, it's legal to EDC here, and combines the best of both worlds as tbh I think Victorinox make better scissors and wood saws than LM.

Just had a little look at the Leatherman Bond, and looks spot on. £50 for a Leatherman.. didn't think it existed haha. You'll have to let me know how you get on with pairing up the two multitools if that's what you decide to do. Smart move, getting two multitools for less than the price of one

It looked like it was going to be unavailable soon, since Heinnie stopped stocking them and the only place left to buy one was the Victorinox website itself. I already had a Hiker, Farmer, and Climber but nothing with both scissors and saw together. But the Bond would work together with other SAKs with scissors and saw i.e. Huntsman or Fieldmaster, both are great knives too. Funnily enough I'd been scouring the internet for a used PST 1 which are almost impossible to get hold of here in the UK, so I was glad when they released the Bond last year.

When batoning with a slip joint knife (like a Huntsman), you have the blade at 90 degrees to take any tension off the back spring so you’re less likely to damage the spring. With the small knife blade, I mod mine with a flat grind for whittling. Check out Felix Immler’s channel, full of tips and tricks for a Victorinox SAK. As for pliers, there are Victorinox 91 mm models that have pliers, but they are not heavy duty like Leatherman or Victorinox Swisstool pliers.

I compliment my Huntsman with a Leatherman Rev, light and didnt break the bank. As for the 'fixed' blade, answer is simple - dont do anything that may make a policeman need to search you!

Pay a tenner more and you can get the Bond which has a proper full size file rather than the stubby little effort on the Rev, plus the blade on it doesn't lock so it's legal to EDC here in the UK. The build quality is defo better on the Bond, the Rev is slated in many reviews as being not the best quality. The Bond also doesn't have scissors/saw so I'm looking to buy one next month and pair it up with my Farmer X.

I have had my Huntsman since 1984 and it is still going strong. The main blade has now lost some of its profile through many years of sharpening, otherwise I cannot fault it. I would agree that the wood saw and scissors make this the go-to SAK for camping & hiking within UK EDC requirements. My knife is of an age where it has no pinhole, no hook and no hole in the awl. The owner is of an age where he needs reading glasses so I have added the small grey screwdriver to help with repairs; this fits well inside the corkscrew which on my knife is clearly two pieces of metal twisted together. I solved the pliers issue by buying a True Utility Seven for about £12 on Amazon. This is also UK EDC legal unlike many multi-tools and the quality is sufficient for occasional use in the field. The combined toolset of both is more than enough for unplanned maintenance of most camping equipment etc. Good review and better t-shirt! Cheers.
