Its been my EDC for decades. A good pouch for those, is the middle finger of a large worn out leather glove- which you can make into a neck knife sheath, hang from a belt, or just keep it in a pocket so it doesn't wear your pocket out. For my dad I stitched a pocket clip onto one so it would hang inside his back pocket right. It's also good padding if you've got a lot of whittling to do, just open your blade and slip the pouch on the handle. much more comfortable. (you can make a pouch lid, by cutting a connected flap from the palm or back of the glove.) Anyway, somebody might find that useful.

IMO, you can never go wrong with scissors, no matter the environment. So instead of replacing the scissors with a file, I'd personally replace the corkscrew or hook with a file.

If it’s an outdoors knife and pouch or pack carry is an option, just get the Ranger and you’ll have the scissors and the file with all the other things. The corkscrew is useful for outdoors activities as a paracord tool for undoing knots, and for even pulling them tighter as well.

I've always eondered whether the saw is of anybuse, given the small size. After all, I don't see how this little guy would have a chance in comparisson to a foldable saw or any other pocket/portable saw unit. Because of this logic, I got Climber - almost the same toolset as the huntsman, but without the saw and withone layer thinner.

@@Ssvinq the saw has been extremely useful for me at work. I use it to trim new sprouts and unwanted small limbs from trees up to about 1-1/2” thick. I have on occasion cut some over 2” thick also but it is more difficult. The saw would be good to cut sapling trees for making poles and walking sticks. But I’ve also found out that a good sharp blade can do most of these things too. I use the saw when I want the spot where the limb was cut from to look neat and clean. I use the knife blade when I need a faster cut and final appearance doesn’t mean anything.

I find that the corkscrew is a perfect addition to the Huntsman,i swapped out the toothpick for a Ferro rod and the corkscrew being the tinder storage is a fantastic option.

i have a story about huntsman.first it was my first SAK that i ever bought(1993),wasn't my first SAK,but it was the first i bought,also it was my edc knife from the 1993 until the 1996.at the 1999 i was to the army for 1.5 year.the first months i was carry the huntsman,after a military training in the woods i realized that my huntsman was missed from my pocket,i was in panic,i was ''naked'' without my sak.I was inside the engine of a battle tank for maintenance, a miracle!! my huntsman was in there, full of petroleum,but still like new!! all the tools are essential and believe me the scissors it was one of my military best ''friends''.the filedmaster has the same tools set,except the corkscrew,the filedmaster contains a phillips head,also have a look in the ranger model,it is like the huntsman,with extra functions,the metal file and chisel,so i think is one of the best outdoor tools.

That is an interesting take on the scissors, I use the Victorinox scissors all the time when hunting and fishing. Fishing they are just invaluable for cutting line and opening up small packages. For hunting I mainly use them to open up small items, cutting leukotape for blister management, gear maintenance and repair and opening up certain food packaging that I want to keep for later so I only cut the corner of it. The main reason why I love Victorinox for outdoors is the flexibility with gear repair and first aid. Im always using the tweezers, scissors and saw. I use the saws 90 degree spine as a fire striker for ferro rods. The blades are really good for fine detail work when caping an animal (work around the eyes, face, toes) and really good for small precision cuts. Occasionally if I have bone breakage from my arrow I will use the saw to cut the broadhead out or cut a pelvic bone if I need to open it for cooling. Yeah, I cant think of a time I would need a file while hunting or fishing. I bring a dedicated diamond medium and fine sharpener and I put compound on my leather belt because you need to sharpen your knives while skinning but you need fine edge performance that you just wont get on files on multi tools.

I'v pocket EDCed my second Swiss Champ for 36 years. I bought it after losing my first one on a High school geology hike in 1985. It is part of me and has saved my bacon many times. IMHO, there is no need to own activity specific SAK'S if you carry a Swiss Champ, it's one and done. Admittedly, I did buy a Huntsman Light several years ago. It is very nice, but it was an impulse buy and lives in my desk drawer. I'll probably give it to my daughter some day.

I never understood why Victorinox stated the Huntsman to be one of their most popular models in a documentary I saw. I agree fully that if you want the saw the file goes hand in hand with it for outdoor tasks, that's why I chose the Ranger instead. With some modding you could possibly remove the scissors layer, but then you would also loose the hook, which has good use for outdoors like picking up hot pot lids, pulling out tent pegs, or twisting wire. That being said, the Ranger is actually quite pocket-able for a five layer, about the same as my 4 layer Explorer, and remains my favorite outdoor SAK. Anything bigger and it no longer becomes pocket-able in my opinion.

It's easy. They sell a lot of them. For 91mm size, I think only the Spartan and Tinker outsell it, not even the Climber does. I blame the Boy Scouts. Out of my circle of friends I can think of half a dozen of us who have a Huntsman we got in Scouts, even if we don't carry it we still have it.

Tricky. The middle pin is IIRC only 2.2mm and can break with a surprising small amount of torque. That is why backside phillips have the mixed reputation that they do.

I have been carrying a Magnum by Boker Camp Pocket knife for over 3 years now, before that I carried a U.S. Camillus military pocket knife for over 23 years until I wore out the springs in it. My $20 Magnum by Boker has all the same tools as my U.S. Camillus had, and my Magnum camp knife has held up terrific and has done everything I needed it to do. It's been a terrific pocket knife, especially for a $20 knife. But after seeing what Felix Immler can do with a Victorinox Hunstman, I believe I am ready to upgrade and buy the Huntsman. Plus, I think it will be the perfect companion to my Victorinox Swiss Tool X Plus Ratchet multitool. Thanks for the review, I enjoyed it. JT

I don’t know about other outdoorsman but the huntsmans has been my outdoors knife for decades, that’s decades. I did add the corkscrew screwdriver. Yes I’ve used the screwdriver in the field to fix my sunglasses. I’ve used the scissors in the field many times, ie to cut mole skin for blisters, first aid chores. Four or five layer knives are fine if you wear outdoors pants with big pockets. They definitely will not work if you wear skinny disco jeans. 😊

I totally agree, especially since so many people also keep a Classic SD or other 58mm with scissors on them anyway (which usually does the job). I'm always tempted to get a Ranger because it has the same stuff as a Huntsman but ALSO the metal file, a small wood chisel (very nice for bushcraft), and another small screwdriver (which invites grinding down the one on the can opener to make a good curved wood carving blade for spoons [might be tempted to flatten the small blade into a better whittling blade in that case]). I just don't think I can handle 5 layers. I use a camper now but I'm picking up a Huntsman because the scissors and the hook are pretty tempting even if it means stacking on the extra layer (I'd rather have a chisel and file though). Ultimately I think what I'd most like is: Layer 1 Big blade / Small blade (converted to whittle) Layer 2 Saw Layer 3 Metal file Back Corkscrew Awl Chisel (Yes, NO openers, NO drivers, NO scissors) Add Plus scales Add Fire Ant Tinder, glasses screwdriver and replace toothpick with Firefly farro. ALSO CARRY 58mm Rambler lite/midnite rambler [non-existent] (midnight manager with the pen scale removed and changed to hold the toothpick) Basically it would outsource a lot of stuff. The 58mm would be my bottle opener (no cans though) my scissors, my screwdrivers, and my little box opener blade, flashlight, and toothpick (all of my household needs) and the 91mm could just be a woodworking beast to carry if I go into the woods.

The Ranger would be what you’re looking for if you wanna have a file too. Perhaps you could review your preference for 3-layer SAKs, exceptionally accepting one more layer to make room for the Huntsman. I have a Ranger and it’s perfectly pocketable. However, I know this is a personal choice. I’d never give up the scissors, but that’s personal too.

I also kinda feel like the Ranger would be pocketable. I went with the Huntsman though, but still, I keep reading and hearing people say it’s too thick to pocket carry, but I keep mine in the watch pocket of my jeans, and it fits just fine and I hardly notice it. I can feel that it’s there but that’s just reassurance that I haven’t lost it, and it’s not in the way to reach passed it down into the main pocket either. To each his own, but based on this, I’m sure a Ranger in my pocket wouldn’t bother me one bit, it’s just 2 more millimeters and 1/2 an ounce more weight.

For the huntsman the corkscrew is actually pretty good. But most people don't know that you can use it to screw the knife into/onto a long stick and suddenly you got a long reach saw. Regarding scissors: I use them quite often. From delicate work including small repairs ( fabrics strings cord... Stuff like that) Having the file instead of the scissors would also be a nice additional knife. And regarding the hardness: having the ability the sharpen the knife using flat river rocks or sandstone is nice for wandering. No need for a sharpening stone in the backpack. A harder steel will take longer to get dull. But especially outdoors with sand and dirt even good steel like d2 will eventually get dull.

It sounds like you're looking for a slimmed down Ranger, but that is actually a config I've never heard of Vic building. For years, I carried a Huntsman in my pocket with a LM PST (file! pliers! Phillips!) in a belt pouch, but I carried more then. The corkscrew is actually a really good tool for undoing knots, and as a glasses wearer the glasses screwdriver is a must have. I also have a tinder tab in there. They used to have the option of plus scales, and my current Huntsman has a set that I openned the third slot on it and added a second pin notch. That gives me tweezers, pen, a Tortise Gear Firefly, 2 flat head pins one of which I filled the tip off, and in the third slot a trimmed down and resharpened 58mm toothpick, along with the tinder. My EDC these days is a Compact (modded for the same scale tools), but when I leave the black top, I switch to the Huntsman with a flashlight on a neck lanyard under my shirt. But if I could find a Ranger, with how I carry it, the extra layer is a non-issue. A Ranger with my plus scales, the Compact's hook (which should be standard!), and the backside tools. Not a hard mod, just don't have the tools and a virgin Swiss Champ or Champ to break down.

Corkscrew is great for untying knots in paracord and bank line. Also stores a Fire Ant fero fire system for an emergency fire. Always get the corkscrew. Also the scissors are great for first aid. Cutting down large bandages or gauze, medical tape etc. love the scissors.

I believe, the closest Victorinox knife to your wishes, is the 111mm model 'Locksmith'. It has a big knife, a file, a saw, a philips drive (instead of cork screw) and it's missing the small pen blade and the parcel hook.

for survival/camping situations the corkscrew has a lot of benefits. edc less and would rather carry my super tinker with pliers and philips. for outdoors, add the fairly new screw in ferro rod and tinder instead to the huntsman or ranger and you have a really compact to with firekit that feels very easy for me to carry in pocket for what I get compared to a leatherman.

I watched a video a while back that demonstrated a number of used for the corkscrew in the outdoors. The most interesting one was using it to secure the tool to a branch to form an extended handle for the saw.

The Huntsman have a slot for a pin near the base of the cork screw. I think the pin is included in a few other models, but here we only get the slot. Can be handy to have around if you can remember it's there.

If Victorinox said to me, "ask for whatever you want, no matter how unreasonable and we will make it happen", Yes, swap scissors for file with a small chisel blade on the end. Folding scissors should be in your med kit they're not necessarily for you to have to find. The scales swapped for the ones like on the GAK but red and the tweezers kept. They're bomb proof and very grippy. slightly chunkier main blade like on the Farmer and the honking great big awl (by SAK standards) like on the GAK but with the sewing hole. If the cork screw has to go to make this work then so be it. Prefer the modern saw to the GAK saw though, that has to stay. Fantastic if it still fits well in your hand.

I have a Huntsman and carried it for years. I loved it but stopped carrying it when I got a Leatherman Wave. I still miss some of the features on the Huntsman missing from the Wave. I like the scissors on the Huntsman and wish the scissors from that was on the Wave.

I call the pen blade a splinter blade. A small blade kept very sharp for getting splinters/thorns out from under the skin.

I agree with the scissors & corkscrew, I would switch them up for something much more useful in the woods or just have a three layer - less is more... When you occasionally require scissors 'in the field' you to your First Aid Pouch. I would switch the small pen blade for a modern sheepsfoot that they have on the electrian, especially for whittling - wharncliffe or sheepsfoot blades are best for whittling. I would produce an Alox version of the Huntsman, making it slimmer, then I would 'embed' a '2-in-1' (Cross-cut/Diamond) file on the back of the scale itself, as you now have the rigidity to do so...

I have one suggestion for an option tool in place of the corkscrew. For the bushcraft type knife, I’d like a wood auger. An auger roughly of same diameter as the cork screw would be handy for many tasks around a camp. I understand wine is abundant in Switzerland and a choice beverage for the natives when hiking and/or picnicking. The pen blade with a scandi grind may be advantageous also when considering more bushcraft type options, or possibly a wood file/rasp. Thanks

That is a great suggestion for knives that are geared towards outdoorsman. I had not considered that before, but I like it. I assume 1/4” is the range you were thinking. That would create the perfect sized hole for running paracord through, among many different options.

Scissors work awesome for splinters and ticks,wouldn't trade em, corkscrew works great for untying parachute cord,bootlaces, ect. Have carried one of these for 30+ years and am lost without it, having used it to clean game, the saw works great for cutting a pelvis or ribs. It's the perfect do all if you actually live the life. Only downside is cleaning it after you have really used it as a huntsman

The Huntsman is my favorite model SAK. The scissors are the main reason I like it the best. I got my first one back in 1991 and used it when I first joined the Air Force up until I got a Leatherman PST. I still carried the Huntsman also.

I currently use the Walker for when I am in the outdoors, I wonder if a combo of the 2 might be a good option to make the Huntsman a layer thinner. The Walker has no small blade and no opener layer, instead replacing them with the combo tool alongside the large blade so it's just a 2 layer tool with no back side blades. Don't know if this would also mean the loss of a back side tool though, as there isn't a blade on the back side of the saw on the Huntsman. A couple of points in favour of the corkscrew, if you don't drink wine, is if you wear glasses carrying the mini screwdriver, or another option is the FireAnt tinder and ferro rod kit which twists on to the corkscrew just like the mini driver.

I really like your idea to replace the scissors with the metal saw/file, I think they could reduce the layers by switching out the small blade for a combo can/bottle opener, though, I do like the smaller blade for cutting/cleaning fingernails over the large blade, they could keep the layers and switch both can and bottle opener for the combo tool and add another tool that could be useful outdoors, though, I am not sure what that would be, much like what the 90° Phillips or corkscrew could be replaced with.

Maybe Victorinox makes so many different knives is because we all have opinions on which tools we want in our SAK. I like the scissors and other tools in my Huntsman. I installed plus scales on mine so I also have a pen. Not easy to write with but if that’s all you have you use it. If you carry a hatchet or axe you should wrap the head in a leather sheath to keep the edge sharp and protect against cuts. And that sheath could hold a sharpening stone so you don’t have to have one on your knife. Thanks for the video.

As a hunter, I have to disagree with you on the sissors. They can be very useful in the field, for patching clothes or other gear, cutting bandages if you get hurt, ect............... But I would also like other more useful items like a magnifying glass, and as you said perhaps a file, and ditch the cork screw, or put a philips screw driver that opens straight out like the flat drivers do intstead of at a 90deg angle to the handle.

When you finally get the Spirit, compare it’s scissors to this and most other Victorinox scissors. I really wish they could have used this style of scissors in the Spirit configuration. To me, the scissors is the only sub par tool on the Spirit. And I can’t figure out why they opted to go with the style they chose when they obviously are capable of producing such a great pair of scissors.

I think instead of the cork screw or phillips driver on the back, why not a ferro rod that folds out or perhaps better, slides out as a separate object (yeah, another thing to lose) so you can strike it with the back of the knife (or back of the saw which some say works great for that). I find the cork screw is a bit handy for getting stubborn paracord knots untied but it has limited use most of the time. Another idea would be a small sharpening rod that slides out.

I'm a SwissChamp fan myself. I've got two of them, one in a sheath that also holds a 1AAA light. Maybe it's because I'm 6'3 and 280lbs, but that knife, or even the pouch in my pocket isn't a big deal. I guess I've just carried it for so many years that I've gotten use to it and never give it a thought. I like it because it's always got the tool I need to make a minor repair that's not worthy of going to the tool box for a bigger tool.

The problem with what you suggest is the file is not hard enough to sharpen hardened tools like an ax. but if you want a file they make a five layer model called the ranger which would be a belt or pack carry. Actually the scissors come in handy for opening freeze dried foods cutting cord cleanly, cutting your hair out of repel devices without cutting the repel rope, first aid, and personal hygiene etc.

I never understood the pen knife and the corkscrew. I've never used either of them. I get why they have the corkscrew; the average European likes a bottle wine with his lunch. The pen knife was designed to trim writing quills, which nobody has used for a century or two. When would a smaller blade ever be better than the larger one? But I suppose the Swiss are more into mindless tradition than we are.

I can carry a thicker SAK if I suspend (Suspension Clip) it in my pocket rather than it being lose in my pocket. The scissors are very handy as a personal care and first aid item.

I just bought an huntsman, choosing it over the ranger for price reasons. I really like how the ranger SAK looks, but should I pay 30 euros (considering that in Italy for the huntsman itself is sold for about 35) for just a file and a chisel? Of course I should not. The only good thing about having a file in the outdoors is the ability to file down wooden crap I make so I can avoid splinters. My solution: added two or three pieces of sandpaper in my camping bag. If you have to sharpen an axe, use a sharpening stone. If you have to hack through barbed wire, you're not a woodsman anymore 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you for the review - very interesting. Two points I found a bit strange: You want the cork screw replaced but don't know with what. Why not simply put a tinder in there as the huntsman is an outdoor knife? Second point: a file instead of the scissors. How about you take a look at the Victorinox Mountaineer? It is still relatively small but has a file (no woodsaw, though). If you want to have a file and a saw, you'd have to go for a model like the Ranger, which has five layers if I'm not mistaken. I think the tool you really want is the Farmer Allox: no scissors, no cork screw (but still no file, I'll give you that).

Of all the multitools and Victorinox models I own. . . I don’t own a Huntsman. After I got my hands on a Modeler and Yeoman (then my custom one) I really think I snuffed out my curiosity for trying other 91mm models.

Nice knife but a bit too bulky with that extra layer with the saw so I gave mine to my nephew and carry a Climber now: great for an urbanite!

IMO the spine of the wood saw is an excellent ferro rod striker of course careful thumb placement is required

I don't have this one yet but I'm getting it soon. If I could swap one tool it'll be the small knife for a file. I'm getting this one for the scissors without sacrificing the saw also the hook is handy for hot pot lids. I'm a hunter and a dog hunter mainly for rabbits so the awl is great for punching holes in the collars. Only SAK I have rn is the hiker.

You forgot the pin hole at the base of the corkscrew. On this model you have to supply your own pin. I don’t remember which model includes the pin. I would rather have a file instead of the hook

Iv always wanted a sak with a marlin spike in place of the corkscrew or philips driver. It would work really well on somthing like the climber, they could name it the sailor.

Victorinox FieldMaster replaces corkscrew with Phillip's screwdriver. The Victorinox Ranger has a file and wood saw.

I've got the fieldmaster which is exactly the same as the huntsman except for the Philips screwdriver instead of the corkscrew. The fieldmaster would be perfect for me if it took away the can opener tool and the bottle opener tool and replaced it with the single bottle/can opener tool from the bantam then added a file. The huntsman would be better if the corkscrew was replaced with a file

I really wish there were a thinner Victorinox with a file. The thinnest I know of is the Ranger and that's a five layer. I made a suggestion on their site of a three layer knife that is basically the Camper with the small blade replaced with the combo can/bottle opener and a file taking their place. I doubt anything will ever come of it but I can dream.

replace the cork screw with a 1/4 inch bit driver so you can throw some 1/4 inch screw or drill bits in there.. ive been wanting to try and take one of mine apart to see if i could add one, but have yet to bite the bullets

That's why my favourite outdoor Swissy is the Ranger... I get the scissors plus I get the file - can do some plier tasks when used as a metal saw. If I need more than that... I should have brought my Leatherman!

If you lift the corkscrew, is there a hole for a pin? Many SAKs without 'plus scales' still have a hole for a standard dressmaking pin.

For me I think the back tool where the corkscrew/screwdriver is should be a bit driver socket and as well as say a no1 and no2 Philips bit as standard, it should come with a new configured locking corkscrew to fit the socket. I know there’s always the cybertool but my suggestion would breathe new life into an old design.. if you want a file then don’t lose the scissors and gain a file with the ultimate outdoors pocket knife, the Ranger

Nice review. I also prefer three layer for pocket carry, so I opted for the Camper. I always have a Classic SD on my keychain, so it's scissors is almost always adequate, and I don't really "need" the parcel hook. However, If I could only have one SAK knife on me, it would be the Huntsman.

Well, I've carried Victorinox knives all my adult life and can say with conviction that the scissors and awl/reamer are the two specific tools (aside from the knife blades of course) that I have used THE most, both outside and around the house/work/office. You mention replacing the scissors with the file, specifically for the outdoors, this presumably being the intention of the Huntsman. Well, in my experience there are very few occasions where I have felt the need for the file tool out in the woods or the bush. The file tool is more useful when being used around the house/shed maybe, but generally in those areas files are close to hand anyway. I just cannot justify replacing the scissors with any other less useful tool. Nope, definitely can't go along with that one! 7:05 Small blade: you really should have a look at some of Felix Immler's videos/books on SAKs! He demonstrates that especially outdoors the small blade is in fact more useful for more tasks than the large blade!

Isn’t a softer steel better on a general purpose knife, corrosion resistant and tough also not as brittle as maybe a harder steel. Also a bit easier to sharpen in the field

I've actually have same one in red but without the saw and can opener (but with a needle). Mine is 25 years old, I think. Maybe even older. I still use it nearly every day. 👍🏻👌🏻 However, I've one issue with it. The spring from the scissor broke off at the 180º bend. Just from metal fatigue I believe. Never did something weird with it. It's still usable, and I know that the new scissors have different, improved, design though. My father had a real thick Swiss army knife model. I'm guessing something like 10-13? layers. He introduced me to this tool. It got stolen from the hospital when he was there laying in a coma, fighting for his life. ffs.
