I've stated this a thousand times already. You and your channel are GREAT!! Really great content and awesome approach to keep folks engaged. As stated before, I'm doing my channel (jeepNdirt) as a fun thing, but as I work on stuff to post (every few months) I can tell you one of the little projects I have is encourage folks who can't camp (due to special needs, etc.) on how to go about experiencing overlanding places without camping and how to find them. I think I'll simply do a small intro, feed some of my experience, then send them to your video here, then ask them to come back for more. (wait, your channel is so freaking great, they won't come back. Lol!!!) Ahh it doesn't matter, as long as I can help someone then in God's eyes I've served someone. God Bless you brother. Seriously I'm having a hard time understanding why you're not at 100k subscribers or more. Oh, and I'm also a YJ guy for over 21 years and love that hoodie.

These are some great tips! Thank you! I don’t see it up anymore but years ago “Explore Southwest” posted a video with some interesting ideas. Old bookstores and libraries with a local section often have books that go into detail, including locations, on neat things to go see. Sometimes these POI’s never made the jump to the digital world so they’re relatively unknown. Another way to find good trails is to do essentially what Adv Taco does. Look through USGS reports of old mining claims or FAA records for old plane crashes and build your trip around finding that neat historical stuff. (or go hunt fire towers like you guys do) A lot of these spots had historical trails built to them to support whatever work was going on there. It’s can be helpful to have a goal in mind and let the trail exploration happen along the way

Will, Thanks a bunch for this vid and the coming series for beginners. Your delivery makes the subjects in all your vids very easy to understand and convey the info you want. A question on it. So do you need onX road or trails offroad or something like them to give you the info for Gaia? Does Gaia not have that info? Maybe in the series talk about the differences in all the tech nav and mapping apps. Are these apps what you have always been using and why. If you used others why did you change. Maybe some are easier for beginners?
@Venture2Roam Жыл бұрын
Really great question. All of the apps kind of do everything OK, but each has something they do especially well. So you could pick any of the apps I mentioned and they could work for everything. However, I'd say OnX is the best for initial discovery of a new route, TrailsOffroad is best for giving you detailed information about routes, and Gaia is best for planning and routing the trip because if it's layers. I think OnX and Trails Off Road are easiest for Beginners, but I really love Gaia even though it has a little bit of a learning curve.

I've heard the newer 'overland' layer on Gaia includes many features of other separate layers, but in a much smaller file size, so easier to cram more on your phone. I've yet to systematically 're-do' may offline map layers on my phone, swapping for the overland layer.. don't think the overland layer includes satellite photos though, so still want those. Thoughts on this layer?
@Venture2Roam Жыл бұрын
I think it's good...I just haven't fully tested it out yet offgrid. Plus, I really like toggling on and off those layers when off grid..I don't always need the MVUM layer up and when I'm just navigating on a trail..and I still throw on the satellite layer often when I'm way-finding...sometimes having the public/private layers on is too much info when I'm just trying to see the map on my phone or apple car play..so jury is out for me on whether or not I'll completely replace what I'm doing now...but it's interesting because you don't really have to worry about accidentally not downloading one of those layers initially.
@IcyReaper Жыл бұрын
Do you normally use your phone or a tablet for these while out on the trail? If a tablet does it need to have a gps chip in it or not?
@Venture2Roam Жыл бұрын
I normally use my phone and Apple Car Play with my head unit. If you use a tablet, you'll need one that is cell capable because of the gps chip they have. I don't like a crowded cockpit, so I try to keep it as simple as possible when driving.
