Fun fact: the death note musical was actually originally written in English. Which makes sense when you consider how well the English lyrics match the music. It’s really hard to translate a song because not only do u have to translate what the words mean but you also have to make the translation rhyme, AND you have to worry about timing on top of that. And that’s not even taking into account untranslatable stuff. There are loads of words that don’t translate well into English for example. And then there are the references you got to take into account. Icarus flying too close to the sun shows up in a lot of songs for example, but unless you are familiar with that myth you’ll have no idea why the singer is referring to someone as Icarus all of a sudden.

all the songs in death note the musical are phenomenal - i got the pleasure of seeing the premier of the english adaptation in london this week, even meeting composer frank wildhorn, playwright ivan menchell and the cast including light, L and rem! as a fan of the music for years and praying it would come as an english version one day it was such a surreal moment to experience it, such an anticipated moment and I felt so so proud of the team and cast.

finally someone came to the same conclusion as I did! I thought I misinterpreted the muscial. In the anime/manga I always felt that lights win over L was kinda meaningless because Rem just existing and killing L made the entire game pointless to me. Light could not have lost with misa and Rem by his side. Fast forward to me watching the musical I felt like the end in the muscial was kind of forced too. After Ryuk just randomly decided to kill of light too, the entire musical felt so pointless. But then I realized the (for me) very great interpretation you also gave. That WAS the point of the ending. Just like L died meaninglessly Light also died meaninglessly. Nothing they did mattered in the end. Just an insignificant game. They were just two mortals pushing boulders uphil.

Soichiro’s honor song is so sad I love it And the ending is pure death note

I actually had my own interpretation of what the ending meant. Ryuk directly compared his boredom with just writing names in the Death Note with Light to how things were before Light. Kira's "new world" and the "old world" are fundamentally the same: People are killed arbitrarily by someone more powerful than them. Before it was the government / the privileged, now it's Kira, but the situation is fundamentally the same. Kira's "new world" didn't change anything. Light was no revolutionary. He just continued the awful status quo, but with more death penalties.

I love this sm i have yet to watch the musical but the songs are amazing, characters are accurate and i feel like side characters were more developed for example soichiro, sayu etc. and even though i wanted light to win in a way this ending is SO SATISFYING and makes sm sense compared to the anime one.

The creator wanting the series to end after L’s death is false. In Death Note vol 13 (how to read), Ohba states that he wanted to make the story 108 chapters for something related Buddhism. Meaning the 2nd half was completely intentional. However, I agree that this has the best ending to Death Note. I preferred for no party win, L being unable to expose Kira and Light getting killed even though he won. As Kira and even L are not justice. Kira for obvious reasons, L simply for the fact that just like Light contradicts what they believe and played it like a game. Also I think makes more sense rather than just ‘Light was always in the wrong, good always wins over evil,’ when it isn’t that simple.

I feel like Light always WAS in the wrong, but he's written as someone who you can sympathize with at first before his layers are pulled back and pushed to the forefront. At least in the Manga/anime. The musical feels more like a "road to hell paved with good intentions" story of corruption.

I really like the musical version (at least the one in English). It feels like there is some form of poetic justice when it comes to how L and Light die. L, an awkward super computer, gets killed by an emotionally manipulated lesbian (Rem). While the egomaniac (Light) gets killed by the apathetic/bored Ryuk. Killed by their own hubris, in my opinion.

the musical was originally written in english, performed in english, and recorded in new york as a concept cast album. imho it hits a lot harder than the japanese version which is their best attempt at translating it. plus, the actors chosen for the jp run just...don't hit sorry not sorry their voices aint it. the korean musical is better if were talking about full run performances
