This is the first iteration of Lexicon's premier flagship model, the 224 Digital Reverberator. There were three versions (and each version had a few revisions for improved performance) of the 224 with some major differences:
224 (the model shown): sample rate of 20 kHz and a frequency response up to 8 kHz; this is the darkest sounding model; eventually, the NVS board was added for memory storage
224X: the main frame looks identical to the model shown, but this shipped with a blue remote head; sample rate of 34.13 kHz and a frequency response up to 15 kHz; the audio input and output boards are identical in layout, but the component choice was altered after the fact to achieve the higher frequency cutoff of the Cauer anti-aliasing filters. A couple boards were changed to accomodate the faster sample rate
224XL: electronically identical to the 224X model, but with a new faceplate and a plastic LARC remote head
All of these machines use 12-bit ADCs and DACs with 12-bit resolution, meaning that there are 4,096 discretized steps between the lowest voltage (-5v) and Vref (+5v). However, as was common in the 70s with digital technology, Lexicon took some extra measures to add enough extra headroom with some external circuitry to equate to a 16-bit system.
