The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a home video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was announced as the successor to the PlayStation 4 in April 2019, was launched on November 12, 2020, in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, North America, and South Korea, and was released worldwide one week later. The PS5 is part of the ninth generation of video game consoles, along with Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S consoles, which were released in the same month.
The base model includes an optical disc drive compatible with Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. The Digital Edition lacks this drive, as a lower-cost model for buying games only through download. The two variants were launched simultaneously.
Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. It expands on existing surround sound systems by adding height channels, allowing sounds to be interpreted as three-dimensional objects with neither horizontal nor vertical limitation.[1][2] Following the release of Atmos for the cinema market, a variety of consumer technologies has been released under the Atmos brand, using in-ceiling and up-firing speakers.
Dolby Atmos technology allows up to 128 audio tracks plus associated spatial audio description metadata (location or pan automation data, data about the sound's movement, type, intensity, speed and volume) to be distributed to theaters for optimal, dynamic rendering to loudspeakers based on the theater capabilities.[9] Each audio track can be assigned to an audio channel, the conventional format for distribution, or to an audio "object." Dolby Atmos in theaters has a 9.1 (commonly referred to as 7.1.2) channel-based "bed" channels for ambience stems or center dialogue, leaving 118 tracks for objects.[10]

I’ve changed to av amplifier but won’t let me select number of channels as it says “this setting isn’t available when Dolby Atmos is the audio output format”. Isn’t Dolby atmos a better format? Feel like these instructions are taking me backwards???

Brilliant! Thank you so much @lovingtechlife as this made the difference. Strangely, the only adjustment to this video I needed to make was to set my TV to 'AUTO' for Digital Sound Out as both PCM and PassThrough would not let my Sonos Arc do anything but 2.0 stereo sound. Once I selected 'AUTO', boom, Dolby Atmos registered on the Sonos app.

Peter has changed his settings since the latest Sonos update. I would recommend his settings as a starting point, but that’s for his home. You’ll need to adjust it to yours, even after true play.

Correct! PS5 goes to the TV. Sonos into the HDMI eArc port of the tv.

This update doesn’t support Atmos through a standard ARC port? I get Atmos currently through the TVs ARC port when streaming movies, but now I’m not getting Atmos on the PS5?

Hey Bardactic! ARC only has bandwidth of ~1 Mbits/second vs 37 Mbits/second for eArc so ARC only support a limited compressed version of Atmos anyway. You’ll have to play with the various options to see what sounds best for your setup.

Hi all. I have the Apple Music app on my PlayStation 5, the PS5 has the latest update and I have Dolby Atmos turned on in the settings of the PS5. My question is can I get Dolby Atmos via the Apple Music app on the PlayStation 5 on my Sonos Arc and Era 300s? I tried it last night and while it shows Dolby Atmos on the Sonos app when TV is selected the Era 300s seem to be silent? Thanks

Hey @markmmoran! 1. Even though the PS5 now supports Dolby Atmos almost none of the apps for PS5 have been updated to support Dolby Atmos yet so you’ll need to wait for Apple to catch up along with all the other app developers. 2. Once the Apple Music app has been updated you’ll need to select AV Receiver 7.1 instead of TV on the PS5 for proper Era 300 support. Choosing TV just pre processes the audio on the PS5 before the Arc has a chance to process the Audio itself. I believe this is why you see Atmos on the app but not on the Eras.

I have both PS5 and Series X consoles, and I´m about to buy a Sonos system. Is there a way to connect both and experience Dolby Atmos without having to switch between consoles on the e arc port of the bar? Thanks in advance!

Hey Elchorepunk! It’s very straight forward the consoles connect to the TV via whatever HDMI ports are available ideally HDMI 2.1. The Arc connect to the TVs HDMI eArc port. That’s it. When you switch from console to console the TV outputs whichever console you’re using to the Arc. Hope this helps 👍🏻

I just recently got a pair of Ikea Sonos Symphonisk speakers as rears for my arc on the PS5 and I'm a bit underwhelmed. It seems 90% of the sound only comes from the arc. Currently I'm playing FF7 Rebirth and the only sound that comes from the rears is NPCs talking if they happen to be to my left or right. I've tried every setting i can find but cant seem to find any adjustments that helps

Hey @Rockmonix, I checked and the game does support the 3D Tempest audio form Sony and so should also support Atmos. Does the Sonos app show that it’s playing Dolby Atmos while you are in game? Have you tuned it in with Trueplay? Here is some of what I could find regarding the Audio in the game: How did you utilize 3D audio? This title makes full use of Tempest3D audio. This allows for most of the voices, sound effects, and background music in the field to come from each object and character, with the sound varying according to its distance from the camera and the surrounding space. The 3D audio system also actively responds to verticality, and in some areas, we’ve placed different sounds above players for them to experience movement and objects within that dimension of space as well. We look forward to you experiencing the realistic and immersive ambiance that comes from this 3D audio, such as the Shinra helicopter flying over the field, or the various ambient noises within the vast Grasslands area, or the background music from the sky when you’re exploring the Gold Saucer. The recent SDK version upgrade also supports the Dolby Atmos output, so if you have a soundbar, speaker system, or other compatible devices in addition to headphones, you can enjoy this output as well.

Hey I have a Samsung Freestyle, playstion 5 and an Sonos arc bar and two Sonos era 300 I’m trying to connect them all but been stuggling for a week now , I’ve brought a 4x2 channel Concord matrix board but still can’t get it to work please help me out

Hey Eastside Ink! Im sorry to say but I don’t think you can do it. You need a display or a Receiver with HDMI eArc or at the least HDMI Arc and neither your projector or matrix board has these. If you kept the projector then Sonos goes to the HDMI eArc port of the receiver. PS5 goes to a HDMI input port on the receiver. Then receiver connects to Projector via a HDMI output port. All sound then goes from the ps5 or projector smart apps through the receiver to the Sonos Arc which you group up with your Era 300 speakers via the Sonos App. Hope this helps. Speak to someone in a local store that sells AV receivers. I don’t know of any in Ringwood personally.

I setup everything but from era 300x 2 I don’t get any sound from ps5 KZbin . I only get main screen sound from ps5 and some games . Is this normal ?

Hey Ersel! Yes that’s normal. The apps and games have to support 3D Audio so if the game currently doesn’t support Sony’s 3D tempest engine audio then it also won’t support Atmos so that why certain games don’t support it. KZbin doesn’t support atmos at all just recently 5.1 for some videos however all the media and streaming apps will need to be updated in the PS5 before any of them will support Dolby Atmos as they didn’t previously.

Because the Sonos Arc is a 5.0.2 soundbar (5.1.2 if you have a subwoofer paired to it), 7.1 only makes sense if you also have Sonos rear speakers as well.

Curious as to why you would select Amplifier instead of Soundbar in the PS5 settings if you are running sound through a soundbar and not an amplifier?

Hey @migez1 & tjstokes82! The Soundbar option is more so geared towards lower spec models (2 or 3 channels) than the Sonos Arc.

Beam Gen 2 can process Dolby Atmos so go with Av Amplifier.

@@LovingTechLife Im running a Dolby Atmos certified LG soundbar with rear speakers. It was already detecting Atmos content through my LG C2 TV, so I’m not sure if the PS5’s AV Amplifier setting would change or improve the Soundbar option.

​@LovingTechLife Hey man thanks for the reply on the older video and sorry for the delay on my part. I was referring to the setting in the PS5 audio controls right below selecting 5.1 that allows for the adjustment of "speaker positions" in relation to the way the console is outputting the audio. It says "Adjust Speaker Positions" and it allows you to set the rear speaker angle of output as low as 90° and since it is a Soundbar I was wondering if that would be the optimal choice. Hey @ActionJeezus! I see what you mean, the general consensus from others with this setup is that you just leave it on default. However nothing stopping you from playing with that and seeing what the results are like for you in your specific room setup! 👍🏻

Hey Juan! The reason we switch from automatic to passthrough is that some TVs will take the signal and process it before it get to the Sonos Arc and it processes the signal. Setting it to passthrough guarantees the Sonos will take care of it however if you set it to Automatic then the TV chooses when to pass through and when to process it incorrectly. In your case the Sonos Arc is likly getting the same signal either way so it sounds the same. Does it also show "Dolby Atmos" on the app with both options?

@@LovingTechLife yes it says dolby atmos on automatic or pass through and never had a problem whit the sonos system but also have a Bose900 soundbar that I had to set it to pass trough because on automatic has problems all the time but never new exactly why until now thanks for the explanation One more question why you have to put it on amplifier on the ps5 and no on soundbar ??

@juanlicona924 essentially the same reason, amplifier option passes the sound to the Sonos to process and soundbar option processes it on PS5 before it gets to the Sonos.

Hi David, Avatar supports Dolby Atmos so I would select “Surround Sound” to start and see if “Dolby Atmos” appears on the Sonos app.

I have a Sonos Arc and my PS5 connected to my LG C2 TV and I've been experiencing this sound issue only when playing games on my PS5 where this choppy/helicopter sound will start coming from the soundbar and last for about a minute and then stop and then may or may not happen again while in the same gaming session. Sonos support ran a diagnostic on the soundbar and said everything was fine with it, and then I came across this video and changed the settings on the PS5 and TV accordingly. Would you happen to know why that was happening and if changing the settings to the settings you've shown in this video will resolve my issue? Thanks!

Just changed to pass through,but on sonos app it now says multi channel pcm 7.1 instead of dolby atmos 7.1. Is this correct? By that I mean is it atmos dolby atmos still ? As before it read dolby atmos when I set it to auto on LG G2 ? Which one is better/correct ?

Man I’m scratching my head! I have an LG C1, a Sonos arc and two Ones hooked to my ps5 and on my Sonos app it still says stereo PCM! It’s driving me nuts because for the longest time it was fine then one day randomly I noticed I’m never seeing surround on my Sonos app. Please help! Thanks! Hey Jimmy! Sounds like a troubleshooting exercise for every link in your chain. Go back to basics - Physically unplug and plug everything in, switch of and on everything. Check for updates on all your kit. Stereo PCM - do you have a headset connected at all? Maybe disconnect that and check the settings again are set to go via HDMI - Av Receiver 5:1 - Dolby Atmos etc Got it connected to the eARC port for sure on the C1? Tried alternate HDMI cables you sure they are appropriate one not others you had lying around? Those are the things I would check off the top of my head. Let me know how you go.

The streaming apps don’t all support Dolby Atmos though…. It’s really irritating when my satellite speakers don’t work with prime video or crunchy roll 😢

Hey Delano! Yeah it’ll take some time for all the app developers to catch on and update the PS5 apps to match other platforms on apps like Prime Video. However I don’t think Crunchy roll supports Atmos on any platform.

Hey @gianintorents7579! You’re welcome, haven’t had time try try much. There should be biggest difference in games that support 3D audio with Sonys Tempest engine. That’s enabled in a per game basis. Will also make a big difference when the streaming apps are updated to support Atmos in PS5 if you use the console to stream.

All settings are the same using arc and two rear ones, no sound from them whilst on dolby atmos setting!

@LovingTechLife yes pass through av etc, have the same issue whilst listening to Spotify, got a 2022 Samsung 8k TV also. Earc also. Sonos app says dolby atmos though strange, think it may be certain games that may not support it yet

@user-ty7fl5yf2v Ah! Check if the game supports the Tempest 3D audio currently. I believe it’s only those games that will support Atmos 3D audio.
