This is an awesome guide for people who aren't sure about setting up their 4x4 or caravan etc. I watched this a few years ago when I was setting up my rig as I had no idea what I was doing. I keep coming back to this video for reference for add-ons to my current setup. Some great info about solar near the end too. You have kings selling solar kits to people who probably don't know about regulators and controllers and the staff have no idea how to advise technical setup. Great video!!

@ulrikcaspersen91452 жыл бұрын
Very comprehensive video, thanks. I would like to make a small note though: In Europe, and possible elsewhere, there is one spare wire in the 7-pole cable between the car and the trailer/camper, and in a 13-pole cable two spare wires; designed specifically for powering auxiliary devices such as a battery-charger/DC-DC converter. These wires are most commonly 1,5 mm2 (16 AWG) in a 7-pole cable, and 2,5 mm2 (14 AWG) in a 13-pole cable; and is often used for powering a DC-DC converter or battery-charger on the trailer where the voltage sometimes will be as low as 9-10 volts. I have also seen such setups for other purposes, like say an electric winch on a boat-trailer, an electric pump for powering hydraulic devices, and other such applications.

You folks should look for a distributor here in the states! I cant buy your goods so I purchased some connectors and all from a variety of folks, along with the Redarc dc-dc. Building my own battery box with solar..your video has by far been the most instructional. I do have a question about the fuse off the main battery and the size of the cable that runs to the back of the vehicle. I was going to go with 4gauge but looks like you have 8 gauge there? Also, should I fuse between my secondary battery and the DC-DC charger?
@sillyboy326 жыл бұрын
Also, do you need to ground the secondary battery to the vehicle?
@inncogneato63414 жыл бұрын
In this case the auxiliary battery is earthed via the black cable to the starter battery, but you can add as many earths as you like. To be on the safe side you can add fuses at all outputs of the auxiliary battery, to protect the auxiliary battery from short circuits at that end. Eight gauge is sufficient for up to about sixty amps, but Redarc recommends 4 gauge (up to about 100 amps) when utilising the override feature for jump starting the main battery if it should go flat.

Anderson powerpole are now the most popular connector used in 4WD dual battery systems, Camping equipment and Amateur Radio operations, its worth paying little extra for genuine Anderson brand as there are so many (Anderson Style) clones and company branded types that regularly fail especially mating with the genuine connectors.

I don’t see Replies from KickAss, but the vids are Excellent .... thank you. Disappointing that your products aren’t distributed in the US. Since KickAss doesn’t reply here, I’m hopeful that (some) INFORMED Viewers might weigh in. I’m going Dual Battery in a 90s Jeep. I’m in CA and deal with Smog Inspections, so placing “House” battery where Intake is located isn’t ideal (for Me). The XJ is Very SMALL, and virtually ALL ‘conventional’ space is Fully accounted for. I am looking for a Cranking Battery, a House Battery, an Inverter, and VSR (Isolator). I have concluded that the most (Reasonable) install is a High Capacity, oversized Deep Cycle AGM battery in the stock location, but wired for “House”. Getting a High CCA Starting AGM battery for a MOTORCYCLE, ATV, or Wheelchair, and mounting it at FRAMERAIL on its side, under floorboard as “Starting” battery. Since the OE Battery is essentially a Cranking battery, and the Alternator powers vehicle once running, it seems that as long as I supply 400+CCA, it should work, right ? An oversized (130A) Alternator should keep Both batteries charged, despite low aH of my “Cranking” battery Plan, I’m thinking .... Any viewers who have a Base of Knowledge, please consider weighing in on any Concerns or Affirmations about my Plan .... Thank You

I know agm deep cycles dont like under bonnet what sort of battery would you recommend. I would run a battery in the back but still need the 3rd row in the back of my prado
@KickAssProducts4 жыл бұрын
Hey Brendan, we would suggest either a wet-cell lead-acid or calcium batteries for under bonnet use. These will be able to deal with the heat and still offer deep-cycle performance.

Besides thick cable , when using a dc dc to bring it up to Proper voltage what would be the issue going from the 12 volt socket already in the cargo to Anderson adapter? But yes extremely well done video.
@KickAssProducts Жыл бұрын
12 volt cig sockets are only rated at 10amps. The KickAss DC-DC charger is 25 amps so the fuse in the cig socket will blow.
@edwardgansky78547 жыл бұрын
Hi Guys. I've noticed that the cable you're using to run from the start battery is very thin. The cable I've just purchased is 6b&s which is considerably thicker that the one you're using in your demo. If you're installing a second battery in the engine bay under the hood, then it's probably fine to use a thinner cable that you're using. However. if you're running the cable all the way to the rear of a car or indeed all the way to the caravan, then would you not need a thicker cable to carry the current all that way ?
