I’ve had my one spot for about 2-3 weeks now, skiddish as all hell at first. In the past week he has been gorging like a pig and accepting frozen brine, flakes, and the everyday and sometimes 2 small sheets of nori. This fish may seem very hard to figure out their mood, but once yours is comfortable, it’s so easy to know when they get upset or not because they will then change less often and only when truest expressing emotion.
@LayneWilson3 жыл бұрын
Yeah they definitely take a little bit to warm up but one they do there pretty smart and brave fish typically. Fhillip sees me picking up the fish food from across the room and starts swimming very excitedly now. Before he would go and hide whenever I got really close to the tank.

That could be a sign of stress then. Make sure no other fish are picking at them and make sure your water parameters are within a good range. Also if you just recently got the fox face that’s pretty normal it’s pretty stressful for them to get moved around. It took Fhillip about 3 days to start getting his color back when I got him.

I have a metallic/magnificent and I named her/him Versace because they look like some random Versace pattern and I love it so much, very peaceful and chill, gets along with my smaller butterflies, royal gramma and pair of pink clowns. Mine never eats corals, but devours algea, and is super friendly, I moved it to my 210 fowlr from my reef tank, and he turned black because he was so upset but he’s doing great now, and loves all the extra space now, he’s almost full size and is basically like a puppy very friendly and sweet fish
@timothybearden26214 жыл бұрын
I had a foxface in my display. He was fed 5 times a day. One day I went to Disneyland, and he was only fed 3 times that day via auto feeder. I came back home, and half my zoas were gone. Over 100 zoas gone, probably more like 200 polyps. I placed a new one in my inlaws tank with a hope that it wouldn't happen again. Everything was fine for a couple days, but he ran out of algae. Fed three times daily, but ate all the zoas in the tank. So I've had bad luck with them. Both rather small in size.
@LayneWilson4 жыл бұрын
Wow! That’s scary I’m sorry to hear that. It’s really crazy how these fish never pose a problem in some people’s tanks and in others they strike for no reason at all.

Thats really cool he does sound like a lucky fish. What size of tank is your foxface in? Im getting excited to move phillip my foxface to my new build. He’s in my 30 gallon isolation take but their really isn’t a lot of room for him to swim. But he sure has earned a new home, he keeps that tank clean.
@NotKumiYeou3 жыл бұрын
@@LayneWilson mine's in my 75gal, but i custom built it so it's a 3ft tank. luckily they're not like tangs and don't tend to zip around, so it works out pretty well, but if yours gets to be over 5 inches long, definitely consider 4ft of space or more.

Great video - how do they know how the other fish “feel” though? I’ve had great experiences with Foxfish…
@LayneWilson3 жыл бұрын
Well great point, you wont technically ever know. As “feel” is associated with emotion. Since we are not fish, we cant assume to truly know how they feel. In this context feel is used as a description. Based on how they interact and behave within our reef environments. Such as stressful behavior like hiding or quick erratic movement. Verses natural swimming, eating behavior and calm interaction with other fish. Thanks for the comment Dan!
@adamnorvell3 жыл бұрын
My LFS owner says this 10 times a day when ever someone asks him about if a fish will do a certain thing. “Why did Jeffery Domer eat people and other people are vegan? We’re all different.”

In my experience he should be not afraid of everything after 3 days. But it can take some time to feel comfortable. Each fish can have different personality’s. You mentioned its a new tank has it gone through a full cycle? This can make a fish feel stressed. How long has the tank been running?

It depends how many fish you already have in your tank and how much rock-work there is in there for him to hide. But generally it’s ok for them to be put in smaller than 75gal as long as you know for sure you can re home it when it gets bigger.

Oh wow that’s pretty interesting I wonder if they get along much better even if the tank isn’t that much bigger. I think that’s probably the case for a lot of fish especially ones collected from the wild that went from swimming around an entire reef to swimming in a tiny cube. I think some of the behaviors we observe in some fish in this hobby are probably because of that.

Foxfaces and other rabbitfish probably don’t actually form pairs for breeding purposes. Interestingly, it was found that a lot of the pairs are of the same sex, and that they breed in large groups away from the reef. The purpose of swimming in pairs is so that one of them can keep watch for predators while the other feeds!
