I’ve been growing these for a few years now in the ground but here in Ontario our winters are too cold so I need to dig up the bulbs and store in a cardboard box with holes in a cool place. This past spring I decided to plant most of the bulbs in planters. Well the planters are blooming way ahead of those in the ground. Same care, fertilizer, water and of course encouragement.

I just got a purple calla lily for my birthday. I love plants and I do hope that this one survives. She has 8 beautiful flowers. I live in Florida so outside is a big no. I placed her on a table by a window and she gets the morning sun. I really hope she will thrive. Thanks for your video and any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have yellow and purple/pink in my front yard I have been really really lucky I randomly saw these bulbs 3 years ago and when we did our flowers front entry these are what we planted and to be honest have not really given them much care except pulling the weeds even have same old mulch from last year because circumstances we did not get our flower beds ready this year and they still came back and multiplied . I LOVE them so much these are going to be our MAIN flower. I love being able to cut them and place in vase they are gorgeous and last a week or more in vase as long as I change the water every other day. These have become my absolute favorite because of the ease of growing just letting Mother Nature due her thing and also having them for a beautiful touch of fresh cut inside my home!

I've been growing Calla lilies in pots for at least 5 years now. Because my zone is allegedly 7A, but I think it's more like Zone 6B, I bring them inside after they start to lose leaves and leave them in a dark spot in the house, or failing that, I cover the pots with something - cloth, cardboard or whatever, so the pots stay dark. Usually, because the house is warmer than the outside, they start to shoot up in April, but I usually wait until at least the first-second week of May before bringing them outside and put them on my deck. The colors I have are yellow and a dark red, but I understand there are white, purple and black ones. I'm trying to get my hands on some of the white and black ones.

@@tishmoore2732 Really? What color do the "black' ones start out at and do you sell the corms or seeds? I just bought seeds, but I'm not sure I'm doing it right so this version of "seed starting" may well be another failed experiment. 😼 As an update, I purchased six (6) corms of the white calla lilies and, lo and behold! I didn't kill them! They're coming up and I can't wait to see what they look like. Now only if I didn't kill the seeds of the black ones I got... 🤞
@tishmoore2732
@tishmoore2732 Жыл бұрын
@@taichitauri3360 I have just started to sell the corms, advising that if they are planted in all purpose compost they will remain black/purple. However, if the corms are planted in Ericaceous potting compost the colour may change over time. I have to say that because I don't know yet, I am hoping that this time next year I may see some colour changes, although I will keep some of the black/purple ones because I really do like them and the flower stems are now reaching almost 36 inches, which good sized flower heads. Their original colours were; Pink, White and Yellow. I have not had any seeds from them but it has crossed my mind to see if I can get them to produce seeds and grow them on from seed, but, it takes about 3 years apparently for them to flower from seed. The way I treat the corms once they have gone dormant is two fold. Some of them I leave in the pots, once I have cut all the dead foliage off and don't water them until I start to see shoots coming up and then only water sparingly initially. Some I take out of the pots, clean the corms and then leave them to air dry for about three days. I then wrap them in kitchen paper and store them in a dark place, which happens to be one of my kitchen cupboards. When I see the shoots from the ones I left in the pots I check the ones in the kitchen cupboard, to see if there is any activity. Once I see activity I repot them. Oh and the ones I leave in the pots. once I see shoots, I put new compost in the pots. From the original three plants I started with I have multiple corms now, too many for me to grow in my house

@@tishmoore2732 That is exceedingly interesting. Of course, I've been getting flowers and seeds on mine for quite a few years now and it's only been this year that I looked into working with seeds. I've found a number of videos on KZbin as to how to harvest the seeds and then what to do with them, that have been very educational. However, I prefer getting the corms because I'm really new at this seed thing and, although I have one "experiment" going (😸), I'm not sure it's going to be successful. On the other hand, some of the ones that are blooming, obviously have multiplied radically to the point where, in the fall, I'm going to have to split them out because I've never taken them out of the pot I originally planted them in, and they've multiplied so much there's really no more room for them. I never swapped out any dirt or anything; just covered the pots so they stayed dark, and maybe mulched the top so assorted weeds didn't grow. BTW, the white corms I just planted are growing!!!!! YAY!!!! Also, I recently learned that if you cut the spent flowers towards the bottom of the plant, the plant will produce more flowers! Where do you sell your corms?

Thank You!!! I have a potted/with good drainage, indoor white Cala Lilly (since December 2022 (I live in Long Island, NY). Do I wait for the entire plant to die off before clipping? Or should I prune as they yellow & die? Also, can I save the seeds and plant them? What is preferred: indoor or outdoor? or both? Thanks again for your useful info,

Hi, Regina. Thanks for the questions! You can prune the plants as the leaves yellow and die. I've never saved the seeds, so I can't speak to how they will do. I would, however, recommend growing them outdoors (once it is warm enough in your area...above 60 degrees). Hope this helps.

Thanx for the informative clip

You're welcome, and great question! 😊 It sounds like you're on the right track with your calla lilies. Cutting the spent flowers won’t directly force the plant to produce more flowers, but it will encourage the plant to focus its energy on new growth rather than maintaining old blooms. By removing the spent flowers and cutting back on watering, you’re helping the plant conserve resources and potentially encouraging a second round of blooms later in the season, especially if it’s getting the right amount of light and nutrients. Also, if you’re in NJ (zone 6), just make sure the plant gets plenty of bright, indirect sunlight during the warmer months. Calla lilies love the heat but can be sensitive to over-watering, so definitely let the top layer of soil dry out before watering again. With a little patience and some good care, you should see more flowers later on in the summer. Good luck with your calla lilies-hope they thrive for you! 🌸

The flowers are bent over. Not sure if knowing the life span of this Lilly, I watered it. Is this flower at the end of its production for the year? Can they be brought back to a healthy look? Or do I just wait til they all turn brown, cut back & leave til next year? Do they only bloom in spring? Thank you for any tips! Marlyn a Backyard Gardner…

@greensideupgardengifts2165
@greensideupgardengifts2165 23 күн бұрын
Great question! Yes, you can definitely keep your purple calla lily as an indoor plant, and with the right care, it can bloom again. Here’s what to do: 1. **Post-Bloom Care**: Once the blooming period is over (usually in late spring or early summer), you’ll notice the flowers start to fade and the plant may go into a dormancy phase. After blooming, cut back the spent flowers and allow the plant to rest. 2. **Watering and Light**: During this dormant period, reduce watering. Let the soil dry out a bit between waterings, but don’t let the bulb completely dry out. Keep the plant in a cool, dark place (around 50-60°F or 10-15°C) for a couple of months. Calla lilies need a dormancy period to recharge and bloom again. 3. **Re-potting and New Growth**: After the rest period (about 2-3 months), bring the calla lily back into a bright spot with indirect sunlight, and start watering it again. You should see new growth start to appear. At this point, you can repot it if necessary into fresh, well-draining soil to encourage healthy roots. 4. **Next Blooming**: Calla lilies typically bloom in late spring or early summer, so it may bloom again next year around the same time. Patience is key, as it needs that rest period before it can re-bloom. As long as you maintain a warm indoor environment with plenty of indirect sunlight and manage its water needs properly, your calla lily should bloom again in due time. Good luck, and enjoy the beautiful flowers when they return! 🌸

Hi. I received a calla lily for Mother’s Day. I would like to put it into a bigger pot and place outside. What kind of soil should I use?

Use a soil that is well draining! Orchid mix will work or you can use regular potting soil and add perlite to it to help with draining.

My calla lily flower turned green and fell over several weeks ago and I just looked and saw something that looks like a green ear of corn inside the flower. I think it is seed head. Can I harvest green seed head and get viable seeds?
@greensideupgardengifts2165
@greensideupgardengifts2165 23 күн бұрын
It sounds like your calla lily has produced a seed head, which is often a sign that the plant has finished blooming. The "green ear of corn" you're seeing is likely the seed pod, and while it's technically possible to harvest seeds from it, there are a few things to keep in mind: 1. **Ripeness of the Seed Head**: For the seeds to be viable, the seed head needs to mature. If it’s still green, it might not be fully developed yet. Wait until the seed head turns brown and begins to dry out before harvesting the seeds. This is when the seeds are most likely to be viable. 2. **Harvesting**: Once the seed head is mature, you can carefully cut it off and open it up to collect the seeds. Be sure to store the seeds in a cool, dry place until you're ready to plant them. 3. **Germinating Seeds**: Calla lilies grown from seed can be a bit tricky, and it can take a couple of years for them to mature and bloom. The seeds should be planted in a well-draining potting mix, and you can start them indoors in a warm spot. Keep in mind that seeds from hybrid calla lilies may not produce plants exactly like the parent, and they can be slower to grow compared to plants grown from bulbs. In short, while you *can* harvest seeds from the green seed head, make sure it’s fully matured before collecting. Just keep in mind that growing calla lilies from seed is a longer process compared to starting with a bulb. Good luck, and happy gardening! 🌱🌸

What recommendations do you have for fertilizer? I'm going on my second and third year with my bulb plants and they are not producing flowers. This year's earliest that I started planting them inside. It was either the end of April or May. It's now the third week of July and I still have no flowers. They are in a pot outside getting full sun part of the day. Last fall I had to take them out of the pot to put mums in but the leaves were so gorgeous that I actually broke them off of the bulb and stuck him in a vase and they kept all winter long.

I have a couple questions for you: 1. Is the light bright? 2. how many hours of light is it getting. Typically when the flowers start to turn green, that means the plant isn't getting enough light.

Do calla lilies bloom throughout the season or they just give out one flower per plant ?
@greensideupgardengifts2165
@greensideupgardengifts2165 23 күн бұрын
Great question! Calla lilies typically bloom once during the growing season, but they can produce multiple flowers on a single plant. Each flower will bloom one at a time, usually starting in late spring or early summer and continuing through mid-summer, depending on the climate and care. Once the first bloom fades, a new flower will typically emerge from the same plant, and it may continue to produce flowers for a few months. After the bloom cycle is over, the plant will enter a dormant phase, where the flowers stop, and the foliage may die back. If you're growing your calla lilies indoors, or in a mild climate, they might bloom for a longer period, but for most outdoor plants, they tend to give one good bloom cycle per year. To encourage more flowers next season, make sure the plant gets plenty of sunlight, water it properly (but not too much!), and give it a rest period after it finishes blooming. 🌸🌿

Can calla lilies be kept year round as an inside plant? Could I repot the plant in a larger container to give the roots more room?
@greensideupgardengifts2165
@greensideupgardengifts2165 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, just make sure you are giving them enough bright, indirect light! And if you do repot them, repot them in a well draining soil, as they are prone to root rot. Only repot them when they are root bound (you can see roots circling around the pot OR the rootball is mostly roots and now soil.) Let me know if you would like to see any other topics covered!

Most calla lillies that come from nurseries are grown in low oxygen, poor quality soil. Thats why they get root rot and die. I immediately repot them in well draning potting mix or plant them in a semi shade are. Mine have come back year after year.
