8:27 portal axle with unlockable diff doesnt make sense at all. It os meant for off roading so it is better to make it without diff than with diff that cant be locked.

I have an idea. Make a fully independent suspension vehicle with portal axles and locking differentials. That's what GM did with the hummer.

@larsjrgensen59753 жыл бұрын
Nice showing of suspension designs, but the dif lock has very little to do with suspension design. A dif lock can be made by only increasing the width of the differential by 1 gear, that should be possible to fit in most of these setups. If the increased width is not acceptable, the dif can be moved and a drive shaft per wheel can be used and depending on the design it could allow steering too.
@timramich3 жыл бұрын
I don't know why these listed a locking differential as a con. A differential isn't a suspension component.

The reason is that it's too thin for a lock and you need an lock for more heavy duty off-road terrain

@kevinhageman40483 жыл бұрын
These Technic-type parts and pieces were just being released during the latter part of my youth. I had to use rubber bands and ink pen springs for my suspension designs. There's no telling what I could have designed and built. This is awesome.
@redshoebox3 жыл бұрын
The new spring elements definitely give more freedom in suspension designs, but rubber bands are actually quite useful for suspension too, I even use them in my more recent projects.

Awesome! I love seeing real suspension setups in Lego :D The last one, portal axel front suspension, it's very similar to the setup in the 8110. While it is a great one for offroad and a simple design. One big downside I've noticed was the negative caster angle, at higher speeds it becomes extremely unstable and there's a lot of stress on the steering components. Not criticism just an observation ^^ High speed test I did once when I ran my Unimog down the hallway- it violently veered off and crashed in an awesome way. XD

basically all your live axle designs miss a critial cross link. no wonder things get wobbly. i understand one can cheat one or more freedom grades away with suspension etc, but it's not how it works in reality. either there is a double link or a panhard rod. or both.

I've been working on an off road buggy since Sep 26. I'm trying to figure out a good suspension system, the current one is an independent front and the back is a pretty much a swing arm set-up like used on motorcycles. I'm working in a smaller scale than any of these set-ups tho.

@redshoebox3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it is possible, but it is much harder due to space restraints, especially when the lock is on the axle itself.
@loz48303 жыл бұрын
@@redshoebox you can just take the diff out and have it be locked, theres nothing forcing you to put a diff in any of the suspension types you built
@congruentcrib3 жыл бұрын
I do like what you have here. I do wish the suspension system shown were a little more accurate to real cars, but with limitations comes sacrifices. Along with that, a lot of the things on here said no positive caster; every suspension system with steering has some form of caster. Even cars like Mercedes and Audi have caster specs even though when driving there is no caster.
