Hello. Great content. Can you make a video on nd filters, on when to use them, in what light conditions, and either to use them or not for low light/sunset scenarios, mainly for dlog/dcinelike filming. I have a Mavic 3 Classic and the native ISO from 400 to 800 in dlog is driving me crazy!
@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
This is actually pretty straight forward. I'd always use the ND filter that gives me a good exposure with a shutter speed that's 1 over twice the frame rate. For 30 fps footage, that would be around 1/60 of a second (1 / 2*fps). With the Mavic 3 and its variable aperture you can then fine-adjust by changing the aperture. Hope that helps :) I'd reckon you wouldn't need any ND filter during low light scenarios like twilight with the Mavic 3, but really, just try it out and you'll see :) Thank you very much for your feedback, I appreciate it. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Amazing Video, thanks! You mentioned sunset/ sunrise. Could you give us some more information about that? What ND filter and settings there? I’m asking because, as you said in the video, the sun will be very bright while the rest is very dark. I often have the problem of high contrast and can’t find the right balance. Appreciate the help, Thanks!
@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback! Sunrise/sunset is no different than everything else. You need to use an ND filter that gives you a good shutter speed for the exposure you're looking for. The contrast problem is the same with or without NDs. If the contrast is too high, you have to decide whether you'd prefer to expose for the sky or the foreground. If you try to find a balance between both you will usually end up with a sky still mostly overexposed and the foreground with little detail and noise. So... In most cases, especially when the sky is spectacular, I'd rather go for the sky and have the foreground dark and silhouette-like. Again, NDs are not able or intended to solve the contrast problem. They are just used to prolong the shutter speed in order to get a good amount of motion blur. I hope that helps a bit, even if this might not be the answer you were looking for.

I don't film in Auto, so I cannot really tell, sorry. I'd guess it really depends on the lighting situation, but then again I'd go for a manual exposure except for when I want to film a long clip from inside (dark) out (bright). You can also take photos with an ND filter on. I haven't ever taken photos with the Avata, though. But with the Mini 3 Pro.

Just wanted to highlight that at 11:42 the frame rate used in the video is 30fps but the shutter speed selected is 1/40s. Be careful going too low with shutter speed as you could get duplicate frames, despite with more blur, which isn't ideal as may get still a stuttery looking video as two frames are identical. Maybe 1/40s is still fine but if you would have selected 1/30s you will probably end with two identical frames. It's better to stick to the usual rule, shutter speed double the frame rate to avoid any problems. This should be common with any CMOS camera. Source: personal experience and several pro filmmakers tests.
@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment :) Do you have a link to any of these pro filmmaker tests? What you're talking about duplicate frames does not make sense to me at all, neither have I ever made this experience (and I film a lot with 1/30 or 1/40 sec at 30 fps). From the logic standpoint, I think that you might have mistaken the relation of shutter speed and frame rate with the relation between footage frame rate and timeline frame rate, or the relation between timeline frame rate and display refresh rate. Incompatibilities there can for sure cause irregular duplicate frames that cause uneven/juddery playback. Actually, I even have a video on my channel talking about this. But with the "wrong" shutter speed you never get duplicate frame rates - you just get more or less motion blur which results in a more "creamy" or more "stuttery" look - but that has nothing to do with duplicate frames, only with the content (amount of motion blur) in each frame. Hope that helps :)

Hello my drone mentor.🤩 I have a question about noise in shots from my mini 3 pro. Analyzing your videos I noticed that you don't have this problem. Do you use any post-production treatments that reduce this unpleasant noise effect? Or maybe you record so that the exposure is above zero. Losing details in the highlights? Thank you very much for your answer. I learn a lot from you and I'm waiting for more materials, because thanks to them my drone videos are better 😊
@t0mwhazzup2 ай бұрын
@@Moscizwysokosci Hi! Thanks for your nice comment! I really appreciate it 🙂 Now, you are right about the Mini 3 Pro can be noisy. When you watched my videos, you already know that I expose to the right, that means, I push my exposure as bright as possible in order to get the useable image data well above the noise floor. This way, I very seldomly require noise reduction. Now when it comes to losing highlights, part of this technique is that you only push so far that you don't clip highlights, except for when they are irrelevant (e.g. the edges of clouds clipping is usually no problem). Don't take the EV reading ("exposure above zero") as reference. Activate your histogram and your zebras and go from there. For a given scene, push the exposure (either with a lighter ND or with a slower shutter speed) until you start getting zebras in relevant image parts. Then dial exposure back one or two third stops and you're good to go. This way, your images will be cleaner. Except when you have high dynamic range scenarios, those can be challenging, and you have to decide what is more important. But I go into that in this video and in the color grading video that is linked at the end of this video 🙂 I hope this helps! 🙂

I have heard that they suffer from blurriness in the corners. And the squeeze factor of the anamorphic is very low, not sure if that makes sense. But overall, even if they were good, I wouldn't use them because I couldn't use ND filters then to keep the shutter speed in the right place. But that's just my opinion, it might be different for you ☺️

Hey Tom, thank you very much for this video. I just purchased the all day Freewell pack as my first few daytime videos have been obviously washed-out looking with the Mini 3 Pro (all set to Auto) with no filter. I see where you "can" still use Auto settings with the Mini 3 Pro while using ND filters, you just don't recommend it, is that correct? I ask because I am still trying to learn about videography and all the settings, what they mean, and how to use them correctly. Thank you!
@t0mwhazzup10 ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks for your comment 🙂 Sure you can use Auto, but apart from rare occasions (eg flying from indoors to outdoors or the other way around) where it would make sense to me, I'd stick with manual exposure since exposure shifts within one clip don't look too professional. But sure you can do that if you want 🙂 Slap on the ND filter which you'd think would fit best for the amount of light given and go ahead! Enjoy the process 🙂

Thanks for the video! Do you also use 6000 Kelvin when shooting very warm sunrises/sunsets?
@t0mwhazzup7 ай бұрын
Thank you for your feedback :) No, usually I leave it at 5600K and adjust a bit in post if needed. As long as you don't adjust white balance by 4000 K in post, there is no visible loss in quality. I just change white balance when I fly indoors where the light is more around 3200-3500K instead of 5600K, becauce adjusting this in post might reduce color accuracy.

Hi Tom, Great video ! I have a quick question about ND filters. Do you also use NDPL filters? NEEWER sells a kit with variable ND filters, PL filter and a UV filter. What do you think of this brand?
@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
Thank you :) I have no experience with NEEWER filters. In the video description I have a list of links to ND filters I use. Freewell are my preferred choise because they start at ND4, which makes the exposure gap between no ND and ND4 not too big (compared to other sets that start at ND8 or ND16 even). I personally don't like PL filters, neither on cameras nor on drones. But especially on drones they don't really make sense to me, personally.

Sure. I've done a bit commercial work (mostly for TV) with the Mini 3 Pro. This year I upgraded to Air 3 und Mini 4 Pro, which are a little bit better. I wouldn't do a cinema production with the Mini 3 Pro, but it's pretty capable 🙂🙂

I do a lot is still photos for my work and need the most detail out of the camera that I can get. What settings for photos would you recommend for the MDJI ini Pro?
@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
I, on the other hand rarely do photo with drones. But with the limited experience I have, I prefer to do 12 MP instead of 48 MP. I don't really see much of a detail benefit, but the image file is much larger. I rather do 12 MP AEB in order to get more dynamic range. That would be the way I'd do that. Hope that helps.
@HuntAndFishExchange Жыл бұрын
@@t0mwhazzup - what is "AEB"
@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
Auto Exposure Bracketing. The drone then creates 5 photos with different exposures which helps with dynamic range.

I'm confused. You say use 4k 6fps for slow mo, but the slow motion setting is defaulted to 1080? So how do i film slow mo in 4k 60fps? Thanks, great video.
@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
You stay in 4K ans simply choose 60 fps. It will play back in real time, but if you use a 30 fps timeline in your video project, you can slow the 60 fps footage down to 50 %, and then you have smooth slow motion footage (since 60 fps slowed down by 50 % will play back with 30 fps).
@@whatsnottohike You're welcome and thanks for your support ☺️ In general, if you work on a 30 fps timeline (which au highly recommend for drone videos on KZbin, see my other video, link below), I'd only film in 60 fps if you intend to slow this clip down. Otherwise it makes no sense, every other frame will be discarded and you have worse image quality frame by frame compared to 30 fps. And you lose the ability to use shutter speeds slower than 1/60. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5-qmmWbmNqjl8k
@whatsnottohike Жыл бұрын
@@t0mwhazzup got ya. I don't particularly mind the 1080 slow motion in the mini 3 pro, I just wish it wasn't a default slo mo speed and I could adjust within DJI settings rather than post. It's seems to be super slo mo and I would prefer it to be a little faster. Thanks for the advice, I'll check out that video. Happy flying!
@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
@@whatsnottohike Well, that's got nothing to do with DJI really. Frame rates are more or less standardized, and for slowmo it's usually 120/240 fps (NTSC) or 100/200 fps (PAL). 50/60 fps is usually real time footage but can be slowed down to 50 % on a 25/30 fps timeline or 40 % on a 24 fps timeline. With drone footage for KZbin/Social Media video, I'd always do a 30 fps timeline. That makes 60 fps for 2x (50%) slowmo and 120 fps for 4x (25 %) slowmo. You could of course slow it down less in your video editor, but than it will judder on playback. So I'd stick with 2x/4x slowmo for 120 fps footage on a 30 fps timeline to keep it playing back smoothly.

@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much :) I cannot really tell you for sure since I have no experience with Mini 2 footage. Generally said, you can of course do the same stuff to footage of every drone. As the Mini 2 has only 8-bit bit depth, I guess that you might get artefacts when you do hard color grading. But really, that's just guessing I do. Just give it a try :)

Hi Tom, for bright days while skiing I use circular polarising filters for my SLR camera, I'm not sure if they also block light like ND filters, but they produce excellent results with the brightest of conditions on snow as they control reflected light very well. This also shows detail you will otherwise miss. How do ND filters compare to the effect of circular polarising filters for video?
@t0mwhazzup Жыл бұрын
Personally, I am not a big fan of CPL filters, neither for camera, nor for drones. But I could imagine that, in this specific situation, using them might go a long way. While CPLs really can change the image, ND filters don't change the image. They only darken the image in order to get a slower shutter speed (which makes the image in turn brighter again). So in the end, the image should look the same with and without ND filters, apart from the motion blur that is introduced due to the slower shutter speed (which is desired). So, completely different thing. If I had to choose, I'd always go with ND (except for your special situation maybe), but there are also filter sets out there that combine ND and CPLs like these ones (it's affiliate link): amzn.to/3KkU6qp (Amazon UK) Hope that helps! And thank you for telling me about the snow situation, this really might be a situation where even I would consider using CPLs. Wouldn't have thought about that.
