I believe that people in general do NOT realize how huge Mexico is and how diverse is. Literally 10 blocks away can be a completely different vibe. We like to book a place for one month at a time to get the “real” feel of a place. We love Mexico in all the places we have been. There is a place for everyone there really. The only thing we didn’t really enjoy as much was the resort experience. It was too..... idk sanitized? For us.

Oh, Maddie! SO good to see that you've settled in Ajijic where I spent two of the best years of my life. I regret that I was not there now to go for coffee with you. I agree with everything you said about meeting people, certainly in Ajijic where I made so many good friends. The local folks are the kindest, warmest, most friendly people I ever met. Always willing to help and forgive your Spanglish. I would only had one caution based on my experience and that is be careful who you trust. I got ripped off of all my jewelry by a girl I was just trying to help with food for her "baby" and my driver of almost two years stole half my stuff when he moved me. Stay there, girl, and do the Real Estate gig. You'll be wildly successful.

Great video as always Maddie! I started following your travels years ago and it gave me the courage to take the leap as a gringo to move to Brazil! I have been living abroad for over a year now and I honestly don’t think I would have been able to navigate all the challenges of living in a foreign land without your insight and positive encouragement always. @@raindances3310 it’s honestly great. So the dollar (don’t know if you’re American also) is at an amazing exchange rate right now of $1=$5.30 Brazilian Reis. One of the main things I like about your videos , Maddie, aside from your being incredibly charming and fun, is that you get right to the point, both with your descriptions and video shots. Many expat vids tend to wander and contain lots of narrative that is just not particularly relevant to the topic. You are always so interesting and full of information. Really enjoy your channel!

Great video! Facebook groups are a wealth of information and nothing can replace staying a week or two in an Air BnB to help you decide if a place is right for you! We moved to Mexico a little over a year ago with the goal to slow travel throughout the country for 2-3 years. We lived in Merida for one month, Progreso for one year, and we are currently moving into a long term rental in Coatepec, Veracruz (just south of Xalapa). We did a ton of research before moving to Merida and we really enjoyed our time in Progreso, we learned that a lot of what we saw on KZbin and read in blogs was heavily skewed to the positive. We completely 'get' this as it is probably easier to get and keep subscribers when the videos are positive but it did teach us to be more critical consumers 😃 now when we see a video we look at the background and think about how long the person has spent in the place. I trust videos like yours where the person has spent a month or two in a city way more than those that visited for a weekend.

Maddie, you're wonderful! Your videos are giving me courage as a single woman to make the move! I've just come back from 10 days at 2 airbnbs in Puerto Vallarta. One of my airbnbs was absolutely gorgeous but there were a number of constantly barking dogs next door that made it unpleasant to use the lovely balcony I so wanted (and not mentioned in any reviews). In any case, I'll keep watching you and let you know when/if I take the plunge! Much love!

Good Move Maddie, Ajijic. I commented to you before about that great deal of a new home in Ajijic for you. I hope you were able to buy it. When you add it ALL up, Ajijic just can't be beat. Perfect weather year round, 30 minutes to International Airport, sooooo many good restaurants that you'll never get a chance to try them all, gorgeous waterfront and mountain views, so many Americans living there to support you, but still a great Mexican vibe. I'm in Florida now, getting ready for a 3 week European adventure, then back to Ajijic December 1 for 3 weeks, then back in Ajijic all of February and March. Hope I somehow get a chance to meet you.

It's good to see you back to doing content that matters to people that might want to move there. The first few... I was like oops party videos, not my thing... but I guess you can only get so far with that sort of thing. Glad to see you're back. I am still looking to move somewhere south of the Border!!

I resubscribed Maddie. You are acting much more mature and centered and you gave some good advice, especially about research, it used to be much harder before cell phones and the internet. Looking forward to your next post.

Another fantastic video Maddie! I'm really considering expatriating in the next few years, I think maybe you could start a maddieslist (crowd sourced) for recommendations for best restaurants and service providers. TYVM

Hi Maddie: Love your videos. Your expertise and advice is much appreciated. For me, I prefer staying in couple hotels rather than Air B&B.

Ajijic looks perfect. From my limited experience in Mexico, I think a small town/city in the midst of a naturally beautiful setting is likely the best choice for an expat. It's worth paying a bit more for the quality of life you'll enjoy there. It reminds me a bit of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala...if that's not on your bucket list it needs to be!

Practice patience it will be necessary; practice walking: most cities are walking cities, you will need to build your walking muscles because that will allow you to explore.

My suggestion: make liberal use of Google Street View. I think you can tell a lot about a town that way, whether it's Mexico or the USA or wherever. Is it thriving, or does it seem down on its luck? One of the favorite parts of our Yucatan trip was visiting the off the beaten path city of Motul on a Saturday morning. It looked interesting on Street View, and the reality turned out to be the same.

Cities aren’t our thing at all. We’ve just dropped ourselves into a small west coast town. First time in Mexico, no expectations other than no snow. Big change for us. Starting on AirBnB for some monthly places but looking to move to some longer term spots. Travelling light after always having a home full of crap needing a tractor trailer if we moved. Now we are always going into town to eat, have a drink, buy something practising Spanish. Everyone is friendly and helpful.
