Good stuff Chase. I do hope that these beginner/beginner-intermediate surfers don’t get the message that there is no value in catching waves that close out. (Of course we don’t want them padding into dumping shore pound.) Here’s where I’m coming from: 1. At their level there is experience to be gained (and joy to be had) in just catching a wave! Even more experience and joy if you make the drop, make even one turn and ride out the white water. All these skills are reasons to celebrate at this level. 2. If the beginner-intermediates are surfing an area with more experienced surfers in the water, the more experienced surfers are going to recognize and get to that 10-20% of well-shaped waves ahead of them. So their wave count will be very low if they are trying only to pick off these well-shaped waves. And we all know, it’s all about reps. Just my 2 cents. Keep surfing everyone! And remember to share the waves, share the stoke!

I'll vouch for this as a beginner Bill. I'm an advanced kitesurfer but still learning SUP and would argue that a majority of the waves I get on are closeouts. That being said, I've had plenty of "that was the best wave of my life!!!" moments when I simply make the drop and get even a single turn on the wave. It's such a unique experience when new and it builds the stoke!

Great videos!!! I could use a video that expands on foot position for turning… particularly foot position when attempting to make turns on backside waves.
