Very good comments. Haven't hunted bear but a lot of western So.Dakota well-fed mule deer. I totally 110% agree on bullet performance. I've not seen any advantage of "premium" bullets except take money away. Even old standard factory bullets may not open up and shock. Case in mind....243 Win with Rem 100grn soft point CoreLokt. Nice broadside at 200 yds, a tiny little 6mm hole going in and a .30 cal going out. Deer did not react but I knew I hit the lungs up front. So, I'm sure the Rem CoreLokt expanded like they show in magazine ads. My foot doc loves black and brown bear hunting. Blacks in northern Idaho and rest in Alaska. He takes a 30-06 because you find ammo everywhere for it. Something about an airline messing up luggage and leaving him without ammo. His second favorite rifle is the Savage lever action in 358 Win. He loves how the 358 performs on game. One more example to go with your bullet advice. About 24 years ago I read a story about a 30-06 hunter. He switched to 220gr round nose and he noticed right away the performance was much worse than his usual 180gr bullets. Long story short> the 220gr .30 cal bullets were too slow. Just poked holes.

@montuckyman49828 ай бұрын
@@dalebenson6859 That cartridge is wonderful for bears. But why use a hard copper bullet on bears which are quite soft and generally easy to kill? Barnes type bullets can obviously kill anything and everything but your neutering that rifles damage potential? Sure, that hard bullet will penetrate very well but how far into the dirt do you want to shoot. Monos make narrow deep wound channels.

I like my 35 Whelen . 225 grain accubonds moving 2800 at the muzzle . I run 250 grain partitions as well. The accubonds give me 1800foot pounds at 500 yards and 3900 at the muzzle . It knocks the snot out of anything it hits . the rifle was built on a Remington 700 action , Wilson stainless barrel and a McMillan stock . It’s topped off with a 2.5-10x44 vortex hs . Weighs about 8.7 pounds loaded . I use this rifle for everything from deer to elk to bears .

So, 338 Federal or heavy 308 is undergunned? Just a question. Never faced a big bear other than with 1600fps 12 gauge solids
@gregjennen22718 ай бұрын
A 308 is definitely undergunned do to the low velocity with the 180-200gr bullets. A 338 Fed or 358 Win have a significant velocity jump over the 308 with 200 class bullets. Neither I'd recommend as a primary but close up they both will dump a huge brown bear like a sack of shit. I've done it many times. With the fast follow ups it's easy to get carried away. Sometimes it's hard to rein yourself in when shooting a wounded bear at 10yds or so. It's important to know when they've had enough so-as to not sound like your storming Normandy. I'm not saying pouring on the lead is bad but it can appear radical if you're not someone who can exercise self control in the heat of it.

@dalebenson6859 What about for bear defense? Given the fact people have stopped and killed grizzlies with handguns in 9mm, .38, .40, .45, with almost 100% success rate, wouldn't something like a 10mm carbine or a semi-auto 7.62x39 be adequate? Edit: I ask about 10mm carbine because in Canada you can have a 10 rnd magazine in pistol caliber but max 5 rnds of rifle caliber lol

@JustMike2791 Жыл бұрын
All day and night. Your Lapua is more than sufficent. I carry for hunting a .340 Weatherby with a 3.5-9x50 Leupold using 225 grain Barnes TTSX which will kill a bear easily. However, if I'm in thick stuff, it's a Marlin 1895 SBL 45-70 with 300 grain hard cast rounds. It's an utterly devastating round to a bear.

Could I use a 300 RUM. I currently use a 190 grain Burger VLD
@jameshunter30379 ай бұрын
no of course u cannot, the bullets just bounce off like spit wades from a straw. u must only use missiles or rocket launchers. all jokes asides. it all depends on what your hunting, of course. it depends on bullets, and most importantly, shot placement. if your hunting deer or pig, u really don't need a 300 rum. even for elk or moose or bear, (u may want a 300 rum because its most assuring) that is unless u like the assault on your shoulder. from the unnecessary recoil of the rum. no creature on earth is going to know the difference between a 300 rum or a 7mm rem mag if you hit them in the boiler room. at 300 or so yards a good old .308 from a semi auto or bolt gun will do what any magnum will do and save you much pain, along with saving you $$ on ammo or reloading
@jameshunter30379 ай бұрын
best bullets are norma oryx, Nosler accubond, Nosler partitions, Nosler E-tip all copper. Barnes TSX or TTSX, Hornady CX, Federal terminal Ascent. the Berger bullet you mentioned are find hunting bullets but not my first choice. the animal that you want to hunt will differentiate what bullet to use. for example, it's not wise to use all copper mono bullets on bears, its best to use bonded core bullets, and keep the velocity around 2000 feet per second at the target for proper bullet expansion. most hunts are within 300-400 yards. the berger vld bullets are constructed for long range. which means they are unnecessary. u want a solid bullet to mushroom while breaking bones or whatever it hits. u can't go wrong with any bullets I listed. for deer a 110-150 grain bullet is enough. for elk a 150-200 grain bullet will work, same for moose. for bear a 180-250 grain bonded core bullet will suffice. remember this, keep the speed up. so dont push the shot too far for your intended target. on elk or moose u want a 1000-1500 foot pounds energy on target. for bison u want around 2000-2500 foot pounds on target. for bear it depends on black bear and grizz'. smaller black bears are much easier to stop. the older bears not so easy. bears never stop growing. for older black & browns, a .300 with 200-250 grain norma oryx bullet is what I'd use , or a swift Scirocco.
@montuckyman49828 ай бұрын
Nope. It'll bounce off cuz it has more velocity than the 300 win mag he recommended. Kidding. Of course. A 230 berger would hammer em easily if you shoot it well.
@gregjennen22718 ай бұрын
A 300 RUM with 180 accubonds @ 3,450 MV was my preferred rifle for many years. Inside 300 yards it was absolutely unbeatable.
@gregjennen22718 ай бұрын
Berger bullets have a tendency to pencil through occasionally due to the miniscule hollow point. I'm fairly certain they expand by tumbling and rupturing, not necessarily mushrooming like a normal hunting bullet is designed to do. I've seen them explode, most common, roll and take on a banana shape and pencil through, least common. They're too unpredictable. Excellent long range target bullets bar-none but not a dependable hunting bullet.

I love my 223/5.56, being military, but you try to take it bear hunting people would think you were crazy. Heavy 223 rounds are about 75 grains, do you want to rely on an eye shot on a 1000 pound bear?
@jasonlopez48559 ай бұрын
223 is not allowed on mule Deer hunting because is to small. I won't want a black Bear running at me and have at least AR-10 or good LR-308 or 6.5 Creed that's the smallest for me and a good scope. You don't want to shoot it where the bear can see you the bear will rush you first shot so I like 200 yard's out for safety. But use what the state allows you in caliber rounds as smallest rounds.

Why is it okay to lose so much lead weight inside the animal, do you like lead poisoning your family. Best thing about copper bullets is no lead poisoning and on thick game, very useful for full penetration through tough hide, muscle and bone on the both sides. You need good velocity for the older design copper bullets but the new ones have greater velocity allowances. Not my opinion, what experts have said.
@dgoodman14849 ай бұрын
And by experts, you must mean the marketing guys that profit from the sale of those bullets! Lead is more malleable than brass/copper alloys. That’s not debatable it’s just a fact. Once you understand that fact, you are well on your way to understanding which bullet to choose for thin skinned animals. Regardless of what the marketing teams and politicians will tell you.
