Happened upon your channel because I am about to get connected to fiber by my local electrical co-op. I found out that the router they provide is the Calix GigaSpire Blast. I wanted to know more and there isn't a lot out there, but your review was great. Gave me information that I had been searching for in order to know what to expect. Thanks so much!!!

so far, i do like the map. its a good way to just easily see what is connected to how, as well as how bad a connection is. my iphone unfortunately swings from 15-50% efficiency just in the same room as the satellite

Great review thanks. You mention Calix limitation on VPNs. So any suggestions on seting up with a VPN. In my case ExpressVPN. Currently considering putting a router that supports ExpressVPN (with all but VPN features turned off, any maybe a public network to get around those few web sites that don't like VPNs), between the Modem and the Calix u6. Thoughts?

Our gigaspire isn’t working properly it just has a solid green light and runs way slower than normal it started doing it yesterday

Our u6.1 and if needed a u6.1 WAP are added to every service at no cost. As we are a cooperative ISP we genuinely follow the concept of all our customers not only being our neighbors and friends but as a part of the cooperative, our bosses. Check out the new features on the 21.3 firmware and platform. Calix is listening to its customers and expanding on the feedback in ways that make me happy!

Did you find any USB functionality such as android/iphone tethering? Can I flash a Linux based custom firmware to this router such as openwrt and ddwrt? I just got it and can't find information anywhere

I am getting fiber next week and they said they install this during installation. My intention is to disable the WIFI on the GigaSpire and enable DMZ on it so that my GT-AXE11000 can see the outside world. I am just more familiar with Asus's interface.

@@Godfather44055I never tried their router. I simply bypassed it and ran it straight to my AXE11000. It has worked flawlessly. My only small complaint is that their router, which everything runs through only has 1Gb ports, which limits the speed of the fiber very slightly unless you combine two ports. When they installed it the guy had a tester and was showing that the fiber was delivering 1.1Gb/s speeds.

IMO, the form factor is senseless. It cannot be wall-mounted or laid sideways, ports sticking out from the corner... just an abysmal chassis design with no installation flexibility. Anyway, thanks for the comprehensive review.

How do you set it up? Ppoe, IPV4, default gateway?

normally, the isps provide the Command HQ app to customers and it can be set up there. however, as an isp tech testing this out before the public roll out, i had to log into the router via default gateway

What's the deal that Calix will not sell to consumers? That's just as well for as good as the SpireBlast is for most attributes, it will not connect to my relatively recent (bought two years ago) HP LaserJet Pro M182nw. There is absolutely no way it will connect through my home net using the Calix wireless router. This has soured me on Calix. On my former system I was using the Linksys Atlas Max 6 and it rocked with more range and better connectivity by far simply because it connected with anything easily including the HP printer. Too bad my daughter chunked it thinking she was getting rid of one more thing we wouldn't have to move as we moved into a new home with a new ISP. I like companies who will sell to the consumer either direct or, better yet by a supported dealer network. These Calix guys make a product they will not sell direct and doesn't work as good as a Linksys unit. I guess they must offer these at dirt cheap prices to the emerging new fiber providers. I couldn't even contact Calix and my after an hour with my ISP's troubleshooting department they gave up. I love to throw my Calix router in the street and drive over it.

I had a similar problem with my Brother printer after Calix was installed. I called up my provider and asked about 'dual band' which I had heard about and he knew what I was talking about. He, somehow from his end, configured a 2.4 gbp while keeping the 5gbp. Now it all works!
