Scott's Bass Lessons

Күн бұрын

So last week I challenged you to see if you could tell the difference between a $15,000 Fodera and a $800 Sire...
But in this video I’m putting myself on the chopping block with the ultimate jazz bass blindfold test!
I’m going to be blindfolded (with the weirdest blindfold ever... I had to improvise, lol!)… I'll then be handed a $3500 Custom Shop Jazz bass and a $750 Sire Jazz bass…
And as you’d expect, I’m going to try and guess which one is which.
Do you think I passed?...
Let's find out!
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

I’m one of those Guitar player guys who actually knows he’s far from being a Bass player. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Bought a Bass, though. 🤷🏻‍♂️😝

The tonal difference could actually come from the pickup rather than the wood. The Fender has 42 gauge heavy formvar wire which was standard in the 60's. The Sire is more than likely enamel coated wire because Marcus likes the 70's sound. Aguilar has a great video where they put 4 different jazz pickups into the same bass featuring Jonathan Maron and the difference between their 4j-70 and 4j-60 is similar to the differences between these two basses.

Marcus is tone is mostly from the ash and maple and a scooped eq, Not from the pickups. If you put the fender custom shop pickups on the sire it would still sound scooped. I have a Sire (with ash and maple) and a jazz with alder and rosewood and I notice the same differences that he is hearing.

For electric instruments, wood doesn't do anything on the bass sound (or guitar sounds). It's misconception.. Only.pickups and wiring.

It should be two bases he's never touched before that have similar sizes/ shapes; one should be super expensive custom built and the other a moderately priced model.

I own a Sire V7, but I have to admit the cheapest american Fender just feels better in the hands, the playability of the Fender is of the chartc imo. But I'd say the Sire is still beast deal for the buck. Still, one day I know I'll get myself dat sexy fender jazz bass, and a Precission MIM too...

All things being equal, as far as performing for an audition, the Fender decal may be the deciding factor. There's a certain aura around that brand that can't be ignored and we can't also deny the snobbery some musicians exhibit when it comes to choosing players and their equipment. For the conscientious player, the Sire will do the job just fine.

The Sire also looks to be an ash body and the Fender is probably alder. That’ll make a difference too. What I’d like to see is the custom shop against a Fender Flea Jazz. Would Scott or us be able to tell much difference?

I’ve been wanting a bass to play for my grandfathers church for years, but sadly my family can’t afford to buy me one and it’s really heartbreaking for me. I pray that I’ll win one it doesn’t even matter which on it is, I’d be grateful to have either on. And even if I don’t win which I really hope I do, all I’ll be able to do is dream about having one. It doesn’t even have to be any of those bass guitars that you’re showing, it could be a ugly one, as long as it plays good I’m cool with that.
5 жыл бұрын
Devion Roberts well, to be 100% honest, you don't need at all an expensive instrument. You can get a good Yamaha rbx for 150€. Send it to the luthier to get adjustment, maybe new strings (about 50-60€). So about 200-250€ you can have a comfortable fully playable instrument. I could buy a fender, but I instead use my yamaha rbx, it is more balanced.

Honestly I prefer how Sire sounds, I kinda knew you were gonna guess the difference, the punch and that certain warmth in Sire's sound is simply eargasmic, so of course I'd love to win one, I tried a few times before but I wasn't lucky, as usual :( Nevertheless, I'll try my luck again, only 10 entries because I don't have a credit card to sign up for a free trial, but I mean, if I did have a credit card I could bloody well afford a Sire too, that's kind of how I look at it, not really fair to be honest... If I happen to win a Fodera, I will enjoy it for a while and record a few memorable songs for sure, but that thing is literally a gold mine and I am unemployed, so of course I would sell it after a year and afford to go to college, should've gone 8 years ago but life just keeps finding ways to put me down, Fodera can literally solve all my problems, and rest assured it would be in very good hands, that thing would get its own closet space!

Just wanted to go in record to say I always admire Scott’s right hand technique. It’s very deliberate, very disciplined. And in spite of my history of complaining about Scott’s modern vs. classic playing style (maybe it’s more jazz than funk/pop/rock) he has a very distinctive way of delivering a solid bottom end every time I watch him play.

Holy crap! I'd never had a jazz bass. And I never played it. I just had Precision many years ago. And today I have tested 5 jazz bases. It was two korean guitars and 3 Fenders including American standart and Flea signation model. And what I want to say: I didn't like any of them. So pure sound, so not comfortable fretboard , so hard strings! It's great world myth about jazz bases. I have Warwick Corvette Std. And it is much comfortable and good sounding guitar! Much more. Good sustain, light and easy playing. Then I took Ibanez GW20 Gary Willis and it is too much interesting instrument. I don't understand why people take jazz bass. (((( it seems that old grandfathers who played jazz bass in 60-th have nostalgy. Same if I say that in my childhood the ice cream was better. I have a friend in USA. She told me not to buy american car. I hadn't heard and bought Cadillac. How much problem I had had!! All my life I had only German cars. And turned to own them. Again.

the sire is much cheaper than you think. 4 string swamp ash maple are 555 euro on thomman( 620 dollar) and 450 £ on anderton( 580 dollar) so nearly 200 dollar cheaper than the price on the video for anderton. well at least for those who leave in europe ( and the alder ebony is usually 70 dollar cheaper)
