The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

Larry Bird was a lot more athletic than he's been given credit for.
@wmden1
@wmden1 3 ай бұрын
Absolutely. He had fair hops until the back and heel problems and always had pretty quick feet for getting his shots off, etc. He had great stamina and was pretty strong. When some people call him, "unathletic", that is a big mistake. An unathletic person is not going to be a top tier NBA player.
@newerafrican

@@wmden1 I agree. Most of the videos of Bird are from later in his career, after he broke his back (summer of 1985). Oh, and he broke his right hand index finger playing softball the summer BEFORE he ever took a single shot in the NBA. He had to re-learn how to feel and shoot the ball as a rookie. Watch the early videos and you will see a very athletic Bird.

Imagine Bird, with all 5 players behind the 3pt line; a wide open lane with his passing and rebounding ability. Nobody thought the 3pt shot was viable until the late 1980's. Give Bird 9 to 12 3pt FGA per game and he'd be hitting over 40%. You can add about 3 to 4 more points to Birds career PPG to fo with his 10 rebounds and 6 assists.

I have Larry Bird and Magic Johnson together as the greatest player in NBA history. There’s two of them, I know, and so many people will say that’s unfair, but even the most literal fan must acknowledge that the two are virtually inseparable. There is no Magic without Bird, no Bird without Magic as we know them today, and one can barely imagine the NBA without its legendary Golden Age. Like Pat Riley once famously said, we got lucky.

Loved your take on Bird being ahead of Magic on your list. Same for me and I wouldn't even be as nice as you were to be honest. Bird was a much better scorer, a better rebounder, a much better defender, a better athlete, his passing was on par with Magic (he just wasn't playing PG), both were amazing team players, and they don't even compare in trash talking haha. Not to mention he was a 50-40-90 guy. It doesn't take anything away from Magic, but Bird was just a better overall basketball player.
@handsomeX

Two completely different positions that call for completely different responsibilities on the court. Magic was a point guard, so scoring wasn't as crucial. He was always looking to facilitate first and foremost. Distributing the rock and making sure his teammates were involved was his main objective. James Worthy was the Bird of the Lakers.

@frankcloutier5495 6 ай бұрын
@@handsomeX agreed, my point is strictly regarding their tangible skills. If you think Magic had comparable scoring skills to Bird, I'll have a hard time believing you actually ever watched these guys play. His shooting didn't translate to anything much more than good FT% when he had all the time in the world, otherwise his scoring skills basically only allowed him to bully smaller guards inside and run the break. Which is very smart but still very limited.
@handsomeX
@handsomeX 6 ай бұрын
@@frankcloutier5495 Like I said, u can't compare scoring when it comes to point guards and small forwards. And again, when Magic played Center, he went off for 42 points as a rookie(and 15 rebounds too by the way). He didn't have to worry about getting guys involved throughout the game. That's HUGE. I love both players, but for completely different reasons.

Larry's blue collar work ethic was unsurpassed by no one.He embodied that spirit from a man since gone long ago. He involved every one of his teammates. He wanted that ball when the game was on the line. I watched the Celtics when Bird played with them. He was such a smart player and involved the whole team. He worked harder than anyone and said when you gotta go to work that's what you do. He never changed, he never made excuses He just was amazingly incessant in his work ethic and he learned and kept learning and practicing every chance every minute of every day to make up for his unathleticsm. Larry is awesome. I'm not old enough to have seen him in his prime, but I learned about him (and watched more clips of him in recent years) and have come to admire him too. It's incredible how he's so skilled at many different things - scoring, rebounding, facilitating, and defense. I haven't seen many who are as skilled as him in all those areas, I didn't think about Jokic, but agree that his skillset is very similar. It's a true joy to watch Jokic and to have seen clips of Bird play. Excellent comparison of Magic and Larry. I admire them both and love their friendship. I think (and agree that) a great case can be made for either one for them both. I've gone back and forth on which one is better. I find it hard to pick one, but I say that your case for Bird being a bit better - especially since he is a more complete player - is compelling and got me thinking some more about the debate. Your point about the Celtics' ball movement reminds me of the all-time Celtics team you discussed a few days ago and mentioned at the end of this compilation. The 80s Celtics were amazing - and thinking about Bird, Russell, and McHale being together along with Rondo and Havlicek on an all-time Celtics team was so fun (especially with how they're all unselfish). Thinking about the rim protection with Walton, Parrish, and McHale was fun too. That is one of the best front courts ever. I remember the video where you discussed how Larry was so close to a quadruple double in 3 quarters. It still blows my mind to see this. It also reminds me of your other video about Kobe's performances in just 3 quarters. Both were amazing. I wish I got to see the game 7 between the Hawks and Celtics that you discussed. Such an epic game. The other game 7s are great. I wish I got to see them also. Have a nice week, Jonny.

Absolute legend. To be as skilled a scorer, passer, and playmaker is enough to get you to the HoF but Larry was also an elite rebounder and one of the clutchest mofo’s to ever play in the NBA and there’s an argument he’s the most clutch. It’s actually shocking how good he was at so many aspects of the game. Probably the best inbound passer and best hands ever too, absolutely absurd. From 1985-1989 Larry went 27.9/9.7/6.8 on 51.7/41.4/90.1% splits. Those are historical, ridiculous numbers that if he’d managed to play a few more years would probably have him 2-3 all-time. Not even gonna mention Len Bias or Reggie. Anyway nice video homes ❤

Larry played his entire career with a reconstructed index finger on his shooting hand (this is how he became ambidextrous), and his last 7 years with an unstable spine, in constant pain. In terms of accolades, Bird's MVP's were consecutive, he is only one of 3 players to ever do that. He is also the only player to have won the MVP, coach of the year, and Executive of the year. He was the most feared player of his time, called his shots and could mentally manipulate anyone off their game. Pat Riley once said if he needed a player to make a shot to save his life, he would choose Larry Bird. I used to watch Basketball back in the day and the Celtics and the Lakers were insanely great games. Bird was exciting to watch because he would do anything to win, even if it meant spending the night in traction so he could play the next day. I knew he was the goat forty years ago and I have never seen another player play such a complete and savage game. For me, there simply is no question of who the goat is.

Truth without that Index Finger injury he would've easily and effortlessly averaged 30 for his career with the 10 rebounds , 7 assists 2 steals and 1 block on 55% shooting 45% Threes for his career. Had he not worked that Tractor in 87 then he would've had a much longer prime and he would've lasted until 45 years old just fine cause he could also win with smarts. Even after those injuries at age 36 he would still make the most clever plays. He would do it all with a Stone Gold Face.

Great video and only 1 correction needed = Bird only participated in 3 three point shootouts. Bird was a scratch in the 4th contest due to injury. I agree Bird is so under rated when these modern "lists" are created. When both Magic and Bird retired, Bird was seen as the better player and with the passage of time, more and more importance has been put on the number of championship rings a player has in their possession. I agree rings are important but rings are part of the measurement and not the measurement. Bird went to a 29 win team as a rookie and with a new coach and 1 player change to the roster in ML Carr, Bird was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turnaround. Bird won ROY and was 4th in the MVP. For the next 8 seasons, Bird in the MVP was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and 2nd again. Magic in the same 9 years for the MVP was not on the list, 11, 8, 3, 3, 2, 3, 1, and 3rd again. Bird finished higher than Magic for 8 of those 9 seasons. Bird was all NBA first team his first 9 seasons, Magic was not on the all NBA first team until his 4th season and was not on the all NBA 2nd team until his 3rd season. Bird was on 3 all defense teams ( 2nd team) and Magic was never on an all defense team his entire career. Few people know about Bird leading the league in defensive win shares 4 times and Bird was 7 times in the top 5 in DWS. There is a photo on page 84 of the November 9th issue of 1981 showing Bird blocking Kareem's skyhook. This photo can be found in the SI archives. Bird was the creator of the 50-40-90 shooting club and I feel it is important to know that Neither Bird or Magic grew up with a 3 point line in high school or college. Bird has even said he rarely practiced the 3 point shot and his first coach = Bill Fitch, hated the 3 point shot and was Bird's coach for Bird's first 4 seasons. I feel Bird is a top 5 player, OR depending on where you feel Magic fits in on these modern lists, Bird should be in the next spot. It should also be said that Kareem was still a great player when playing with Magic, Kareem was the MVP in 1980, actually won the 1980 FMVP after Magic's great game 6, was the FMVP in 1985 and as late as 1985 was 4th in MVP voting and in 1986 was 5th in the MVP vote. Thanks again for a great video. I and others appreciate your work!

THANK U!!!For those of us that were there,BIRD was straight up THE BEST player on the planet thru most of the 80's and Magic got his first MVP cuz they had to give it to him or he would not have gotten one,lol,Bird had his best year in 87 and was by far the season they needed him the most as the Celts were battling injuries all year and he upped his game to 30/10/6 per game,his best year and it was the game 5 steal that kept C's ahead vs Det,by all rights he should have gotten his fourth consecutive MVP Magic just added five points to his avg at 24/game,But when Bird left the game he was in a mix of top 3 with MJ starting to be regarded in that same breath and Magic and now somehow I see him at 9 or 10 sometimes,like WTF??lmao!!

Larry is one of if not the greatest player in NBA history. He played basketball like it was a chess match and the Boston Celtics were much better teams with him playing. Think of his steal against Isaiah Thomas with Boston down by a point with seconds to go and not only did he steal the ball he then passed the ball to a streaking Dennis Johnson for the go ahead win. He also had one of the greatest shootouts against Dominic Wilkens of the Atlanta Hawks and Larry and the Celtics came out on top.

I saw a lot of players play in person back then an Hakeem impressed me the most. He moved so quick it was like he was six feet tall instead of seven. MJ is my all time favorite an I saw him twice in the 95/96 season but Hakeem stood out the most in the games I attended.... If fact I saw Hakeem, MJ, Pippen, Rodman, Stockton, Malone, Kemp & Payton all in the 96 playoffs/finals. They were all great, I miss the Sonics an the way the game was played back then.

I feel like just because a guy isn’t dunking/driving at the rim, he’s considered as un-athletic but that’s completely false. Curry never dunks but I’d say he’s one of the most athletic players in the league. His cardio is one of the best in the league but people don’t consider him as athletic. Just like Curry, Bird doesn’t seem athletic but he definitely was during his prime.

No, because of LeBron James fanboys and Kobe Bryant fanboys an the massive disrespect they give to any player who played before 2000. This is what's happening. I almost chin checked a LeBron James fanboy 2 nights ago. Larry Bird Magic Johnson even Shaq these players always got their respect until these little cl🤡WN fanbases of Kobe an LeBron 2 fanbases who don't know anything about basketball, they're the ones turning all these great legends with winning finals records into being irrelevant an it's sickening.

Bird is the Quickest PF of all time. Also Bird's Motor is 100. He has the best Motor ever along with Michael Jordan. Bird's hustle ratings was 100. Bird was 6'9 235 that is a BIG PF and he as the FASTEST AND QUICKEST EVER. He is the Original LEBRON, The Orginal Kevin Garnett, The Original, Bob McAdoo, The Original Dennis Rodman, He just looks WAY DIFFERENT to racists so they judge him on a WAY DIFFERENT FALSE Standard. If Larry Bird was Black as Night everyone would be Saying Who is that Black guy that is quicker and fastest than everyone that keeps getting to the ball all the time? Larry Bird was Swift and QUICK AS F**K@@K.B.Williams Literally the guy could TELEPORT 35 feet away. He can go back in time. He is a TIME TRAVELER.

@@K.B.Williams how did Bird jump passing lanes and get so many steals being 6'9 235. Carry on with your emotional rants. Magic and Bird were the quickest and most relentless players of all time. even more than Jordan. If you think Bird and Magic were slow then you're a stupid muslim. You never saw Bird play in college live. I did. Bird out hustles and got to the ball QUICKER EVERTIME. Even when he was way out of hte play he would make a QUICK MOVE ACROSS THE COURT AND GET TO THE BALL QUICKER. . QUICK FEET AND QUICK HANDS. The Orginal Rodman. Dennis Rodman said.

Larry had very quick hands and reflexes and reaction time to go with tremendous court sense and anticipation. He could fill any lane on the break too. No need to fly beyond what he was capable of. His athleticism, or so called lack there of, has nothing to do with anything. He would absolutely immensely make any team better in any era including today. I would be comfortable with him in healthy prime as my first pick anywhere anytime. Imagine if he chased individual stats and accolades like most of your typical top 10 list picks. And, imagine if he didn't have seriously impared physicality due to chronic back issues and a few other injuries with which he played through. Imagine the potential if longevity of a Kareem or Carl or Kobe or Lebron had been possible. Of course there's no way he could train like Kobe and Lebron without the health and technological advancements. P.S. updated edit: I commented early in the video then found out later that some of my exact sentiments would already be expressed😄

Here are the top MVP stats covering Larry Bird's results over his 12 year career. Considering the fact every team in the league had several "Hall of Fame" players. I think Larry's feat of being in the top tier of MVP voting for his first nine years is remarkable. Even after the season when he played six games due to foot surgery, he managed to play pretty well for his last two years (plus his stint on the "Dream Team"). I'm not sure he is the Goat, but he is my choice as the most versatile all around player, and these stats certainly moved him up a couple of spots on my really fluid goat list! NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS In his twelve year career Larry had 3 X 1st's, 4 X 2nd's, 1 X 3rd, 1 X 4th (Rookie year), 1 X 10th, & 1 X 14th (last two years).
