Use a metal surplus ammo can and line it with cardboard and tin foil. Then it becomes a faraday cage and protects the contents from EMP events.

I would find some sort of external antenna. You know a cheap one that can maybe get up in the air and extend your range even more

Who do you honestly think you will contact with 5watts and a 4 inch antenna during an emergency... really!

A basic handheld is capable of transmitting several miles. If you’re in an emergency and need help, why would you need to reach any farther? My local repeater is more than 10 miles from my house and my handheld works it just fine. He did also mention using a bigger antenna or did you not make it that far?

Assuming the repeaters are still functioning, such a radio can prove very useful. Not everyone needs a multi-band Yagi or an HT modded for HF.
