Mercedes went all out when it introduced the current S-Class in 2020, including the world's first Level 3 autonomous technology, Drive Pilot. Perhaps they should have held back something so that this midlife makeover wouldn't be so disappointing. The biggest change for 2025 is new backrest cushions.
Yes, the inclusion of standard 'comfort' front headrests with increased cushioning is the most significant of the S-Class's crucial improvements aimed to keep it competitive for the next four years. To be fair to the S-Class, as one of the few cars with Level 3 autonomy, those headrests are probably used more than in other vehicles.
The S's autonomous capabilities have been slightly enhanced in Europe by the addition of an automatic lane change option. There is no need to touch the turn signal stalks or make funny nods in the rear-view mirror; if the car believes there is enough room to overtake a slower vehicle, it will do it. However, this is not new to American and Canadian drivers, who may already order existing S-Classes with this technology.
Other updates to the facelift include two new paint colors (verde silver metallic and velvet brown metallic) and a redesigned MBUX infotainment system with a more user-friendly menu system that now allows you to stream RIDEVU video content from Sony Pictures Entertainment. And that, my friends, is your decision, unless you want to go into minor features like passenger presence reminders, which might attract your attention to things, animals, or people you may have left in the back seat and forgotten about.
Mercedes' launch information mentions the Manufaktur customizing program and the V12-powered armored S680 Guard, although neither appears to have received any improvements as part of the facelift. There are no mentions of engine changes for the grenade-less sedan, so the base American S-Class will remain the six-cylinder S500 4MATIC (current price $117,300), with the S580 powered by a V8 and six-cylinder. Plug in the S580e as another option. The current UK range (beginning at £93,955) does not have a V8, but does include a pair of six-cylinder diesel engines.
Mercedes claims the facelifted car will be ready for order at the end of this month, and we'll find out what improvements, if any, Mercedes-AMG has planned for the quicker sedan not long after.
