I mean they probably did the best they could...apart from the design, that is shit. But unlike Mercedes they kept the V8 in a family sized car in spite of today's emission standards. This means a shit ton of emission reducing equipment, which of course adds weight. And the hybrid system adds even more weight 🫡.

evs are heavy as hell compared to normal cars but still use a lot less energy for the same outcome. The efficiency of an electric powertrain is making a lot more difference than the few hundred kilos more. That said i dont think a car like a m5 should be a hybrid it doesnt really make sense.

The new M5 is the new standard and could be still better then the older ones! The new one is heavier and should be less agile, but it's clear the new one will be fast while its way more luxury and way better for daily drive then any other M5. I'm pretty sure the new M5 will do few things so good, that it will be the better option for all day drive. But if u look at the comments, u will see some people even think the last good M5 is the M5 E60.

This really does look like one of the death throes of ICE. But things move on, there is a battery that charges to 10-80% in 5 mins being demo'd and there are some very, very clever engineers and materials technologists out there. We will see some very interesting EVs and ultra low emission hybrids soon. This is the era when mistakes are made and lessons learned. This car being a point in case.

I get your point but usually weight isn’t that big of a problem with Evs because the battery, which holds most of the weight, is placed at the lowest point of the car so it usually feels not that heavy as the number suggests. For example the Porsche Taycan drives excellent on track even tho it weights as much as a truck. Still 2.4ts is really heavy but I don’t think it will be a huge problem.

@@tomdornieden4053 I get your point, but I respectfully disagree. Sure, a car can be heavy and still drive very well, Porsche and BMW are very good with chassis conception and tuning. But take the same great chassis, remove 700kg and you have an even better handling car. The real problem is that it costs more to remove weight than add power and hybrid systems to meet emissions regulations. And it's not just a problem about batteries, if you take only the petrol M5s in the graph here you can see how much they just gained weight over the generations...

Looks much better than the F90 IMO; more aggressive stance without the big rabbit’s teeth grill of the G8x and the new tech inside looks good too. The only disappointment is the slower claimed acceleration time. There is going to come a time where road legal cars just don’t need to be made any faster; maybe we are already there.

Side note that we need to consider is the 500kg extra will play a big part in wear and tear, its probably going to shew up the tires faster, maybe the suspension as well and the brake pads to stop all that weight.... i could be wrong lets see how it plays out

You r exactly right, the more heavy car gets, the more often you change tires, suspension parts and also the brakes as you said. Plus the motor and gearbox must work more everyday to move that mass. Just imagine driving around with 5 passengers in your car. This is like you put 6 more passengers and the driver in the old m5.....

some things I like about it and some I'm meh about it, overall would've been a good successor to the previous M5 if it wasn't for the extra 550kg, just absurd. You can modify everything you want to make it perform with that weight but the tires are not changing, you only get 4 like the rest of the cars. way too heavy

Emission regulations. But most likely, the combustion engine will put out more than on the data sheet...like the F90 as well. Some have been dynoed closer to 700hp.
