@@Coffeedad so true, usually it’s like build me something and then it’s just a checkbox on a list of things to own. So impressive.

Exactly. I used to be surprised by people who have expensive really impressive theaters who would say they didnt really know what equipment was in it as the builders chose all that. I'm like, LOL seriously? I would be involved in every level of the process, most especially the equipment choices. These same people are ones who use their theater may 2 or 3 times a year 😆 I use mine daily. There might be at most, 2 or 3 days out of a month where I dont use it.

I absolutely appreciate the true enthusiast who knows what went into their system, but we also have to realize there are those that are very wealthy that want a nice system, but they have zero desire to be an enthusiast. I loved the final thought from Robert about his theater being a place to bring people in to and share it with. I’ve spent years building up my gear and over that time, I was slowly achieving what I truly wanted out of a theater. The house we recently bought a few years ago allowed me to build out a dedicated room. It is a hidden place that I too thoroughly enjoy bringing people in to. Nobody ever leaves without a smile on their face. I truly believe that is the greatest thing we as enthusiasts all share as a quality. We enjoy sharing with others what we have built.

I agree! Sarah has been with us for several years and continuosly refines the art of private cinema interior design. It is one of the keystones of Paradise Theater that "everything matters" and aesthetics matters a great deal to our clientele. What also matters a great deal is how the aesthetics and the performance are integrated. The entire team of masters we are blessed with at Paradise Theater work diligently to strike that balance every time. However The Van Cave project also enjoyed a rare element. That being a client that was engaged and willing to do what it took to achieve this level of excellence. He truly made this project team a dream team!

Very well done and executed. STC 114(!). The millwork is amazing. I very much appreciate the time and effort that went into this exquisite theater. My background is broadcast, recording, and live sound. My humble home listening room reflects this. I did the room-within-a-room (STC 60), acoustic-rated doors. The outer room is solid-pour concrete, 6" thick, including floor and ceiling. Back wall is actually the concrete wall, with drywall mud texture slapped on top of the raw concrete, then painted. Very lively and pleasantly reflective. Dedicated 120A 3-phase panel. Simple setup otherwise, B&W 801 speakers, Crown Studio Reference amps. Biamp Nexia DSP. That's it. The majority of tuning of the system is physical, with speaker placement, alignment, and room tuning with furnishings, coverings, millwork, and some traps. The DSP is there for sweetening, but there's also a mechanical bypass. People often accuse the room of having subwoofers, surround, and center channels, but it's just a straight 2-channel system.

Wow Michael! You have outdone yourself. This is your best Home Theater review to date. This is the most comprehensive description of a state of the art build on the Internet that covers the full timeline from concept to completion. I salute Robert & Elizabeth Vanman for fulfilling their passion in building this dream theater over a span of 5 years. If I had to make one change, I would replace the Sony VPL-VW5000ES projector with the Barco Njord Cinemascope projector ($104,995). It is almost twice as bright at 9,000 Lumens.
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 күн бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. If you’d like the barcode, definitely check out Christie. I personally never liked the Barco Njord. The black levels are way too high for that expensive of a projector. Two years ago at Audio Advice Live they had one set up and I turned around to see if a window was open. Nope completely light control room.

The only thing I’d change is not having to mask down to scope. I went with a 2:1 aspect ratio so scope and flat have similar impact. But I’m sure he has his reasons. Great looking room and I’m sure even better sounding.

So….obviously a lot of good stuff here. But a couple interesting things that make ya go hmmmm…. 1) The sorbothane isolation rings for the subs. If he can move them with the lightest of touches, then the energy generated by the sub itself has to be generating all kinds of microphonic movement. And that will impact (no pun intended) the tautness of bass performance. Interested in hearing if they mitigated this in some way that wasn’t covered in this excellent video. And so interesting given how he talked about isolating the LCRs, clearly demonstrating that the client understands the physics of speaker movement and sound quality. 2) the viewing angle from the two rows brackets almost exactly where most people actually want to sit. Front row was about 60 degrees and back row about 42 degrees. Most people prefer around 50-55 degree field of view. Curious if the client identified his ideal field of view. Great video Michael. Really appreciate the work that went into this.

Tautness of bass isn't involved in the below 25Hz subs at all. Additionally the tautness of bass is in control of the bass decay and not involved in the transient part of the sound until higher up into lower mids. Plus my understanding is the floating is only underneath and the subs are mounted at the sides to the structure which is mounted to the house outer wall.

Thank you so much Michael for sharing this video, there is a lot of information to learn, very well detailed and explained by each person involved in the construction, and many thanks to Robert, for allowing you to make this great video. One question, do you know if there is a link to access the information in the book, or if we can buy it somewhere? Thanks

Ohh! Thanks, I hadn't seen it. With this information, your video gives me a lot of information. I'm not saying that I'll make a similar room, it must be a lot of money, but having this as a base makes us consider many aspects when building our home theaters and those of our clients. Now that you're moving house, I imagine you'll make a new home theater with all the experience you've acquired, and we, your followers, will be waiting for a video of the construction process. Greetings from Lima, Peru.

Hi Michael, Although it doesn't appeal to me in terms of design, I was amazed by its infrastructure. I am a JBL synthesis fan and my dream cinema room was set up. Anyway, I have a question. If I am not mistaken, they used JBL SCL-6 as surround and atmos. And they designed boxes for them. I am also doing research to design boxes in the same way and use SCL-6. Do you know what criteria they used to determine the box dimensions? Or do you have a chance to learn?

You would need to reach out to Paradise Theater as they would know the answers to that.

Mr. Stevens, when you said this is a Private Cinema I think you coined the proper term for a room of this level. His room is above and beyond the Endgame Home Theater designation. Mr. Vanman sure seems to be a very "down to earth" fellow and he's obviously someone those of us in the HT hobby should be looking up to due to his knowledge. I may never have to opportunity to meet Mr. Vanman, but would like to thank him for allowing you and Brad to visit his home and show it to us. BTW, I think I should realign my generalized view of wealthy guys. Apparently, not all of them are as evil as I think they are. Surely, I will NEVER be able to reach even 1% of his level of wealth and status nor am I deserving of that 1%, but good for him and his family.

looks great, does all that shiny wood and marble throw off any reflections?
@Youthman
@Youthman 2 күн бұрын
Of course there are some reflections. The only way to have no reflections is to create a dark void with velvet on everything. But at no time did the reflections create a distraction once the movie began.
@AncientYouth64

@Youthman my home cinema is basically as you describe, a total black void when the lights are off. I would find reflections annoying especially after spending all that cash.
@Youthman

Likewise, I would find a void annoying. That’s the beauty of this hobby. We all get to build it exactly how we want it to meet our taste, our desires and our budget.
