The "You pick your engagements" can't be emphasized enough. That is the most important thing for flanking DPS players because often times they will run in the backline and attempt to force a kill. Don't ever do this, all you do is get yourself taken out of the team fight before it even happens. You need to be patient, wait until your team attacks in mass, and during the chaos is when you should be striking. When your team is regrouping you can use hit and run abilities to charge ult but you should never be diving the backline because you wont win. **Deaths** are the stats to look at, not eliminations, not damage, not heals, your deaths are the most important because it indicates how long you were in the fight for. If you're 10-3 you were in every teamfight and survived the majority of them meaning you added value to them as you could do your job in almost every teamfight whether that be as a healer or a DPS. The 20-9 Magik is not better than the 10-3 Magik. He's got double the eliminations but tripple the deaths, that's no good. Of course this is dependent on the game, but typically I try to strive for the same amount of deaths as the supports which tend to be the lowest on the team.

4 1 is worse than 10 4 tho on DPS because it doesn't matter if you're alive if you aren't doing your job

As a dps you shouldn’t have more than double the deaths of your support players. Unless you have a crazy amount of kills.

Also just a slight phrasing that I would suggest instead of Subjective vs Objective. I would say positioning is objectively bad or good, but the bad or good is dynamic so you have to make judgement calls based on knowledge of the game state. Technically theoretically pausing a game at any given moment there is an objectively best position it is just dynamically changing as the fight progresses. Also been loving your videos as someone who played OW1 way back when and is seriously wanting to get better at hero shooters I have loved the insight you have given thank you so much I feel I have gotten much better even just over the past two weeks playing the game and watching your videos for insight.

God. thank you. never watched a single guide about positioning, but i geniunely are tired of people walking into a choke as a hela, and trying to get kills when we come back from spawn, and they instantly get picked, and then we are 5v6 because our tank choose to go in. engagement timing, and positioning is SOOO important. people often use zero natural cover, and stand in the middle of a point, and just shoot forward into a full team that instantly sees you because you are behind your tank, and any time they shoot him, you also might get hit.
@havocgr197613 сағат бұрын
Its like people don't know there are like at least 3 ways to every point, they just go center again and again and die.
@PDilling16 сағат бұрын
Subjective and objective are not synonyms for static and dynamic, just because positioning varies from good to bad depending on the situation, doesn’t mean it’s subjective! 😂
@martinceronr14 сағат бұрын
Yeah, good positioning is a *relative* thing. Subjective things are relative. Relative things are not all subjective.

Love the content Mills, been helping me improve a lot (this is my first competitive shooter in general). That being said, could you make a Thor guide? I’ve seen you playing a lot of Thor, so I feel like you would have the expertise to make it really good. He can be pretty daunting to learn for some players, myself included. I’m sure you have tons of content planned, so I don’t expect you to get to it right away, but it would be greatly appreciated.

Great tips. Im a shooter 20+year veteran at this point and former OW player but its often good to get a reminder of the fundamentals regardless of skill level. That said much kudos for mentioning the health pack thing. I, personally, win a lot of duels that are not flat out ambushes when Im playing a dive DPS by pulling aggro to a strong position that has a health pack. I can either whittle away their health as they approach and top off or have them expend utility trying to kill me and top off. Body blocking and lining your strafe with your preferred health pack is also key. Lastly, id also say learn where you can easily route to get adjacent health packs. There are some area where more than one pack are in routes from one another. especially if you have a mobility option. This will allow for the player to possibly keep up the pressure, alleviate the use of healers utility on said player, and over all have an abusable source of healing x1-x2 times.

I'd argue you're not forgoing Good Positioning when you have significant resource advantage, being on top of the enemy team to seal the deal IS Good Positioning in that moment. Great guide, thanks coach!!

Broo my biggest pet peeve is when supports dont push up to heal. Just sit back when we have objective acting like its the rest of the teams fault for dying because "we pushed too far" when in reality we were only farming ulti and expecting our supports to ya know, support us. Not sit back spraying the ground and spamming fall back. Then bragging about your KD in voice. Like yea bro congratulations you stayed back when you easily couldve went up 10 feet and healed us. Instead 2 people died and now ur wasting your ults in a already lost fight. Thats why when im supp i always look out for my magik and other dive mains. I got yall lol
@jaden577Сағат бұрын
Exactly, playing a support isn’t as simple as, “I must stay in the back at all times and be a heal bot,” you have to learn to read the ebb and flow of a team fight and know how much you can impact it. There are times when falling back is the correct choice, but there are also times where pushing up and being aggressive with your team or even taking an off angle to support your dive dps is the correct choice. Right or wrong though, all it really comes down to is how does your team fare without you healing them? You’d think people would realize that their team doesn’t stand a chance without you in there healing them when their enemy is probably also getting healing.

Hey I have a big question. How do people customize the yellow thing on the right side of the screen, that appears whenever you get a kill, to different colors based off of your hero? I can’t find it in the settings menu, and I don’t know if there are any requirements to get them. Any answers will help.
@Anaarsta8 сағат бұрын
It's in the hero menu (where you read about their abilities or can see different skins), the last tab of specific hero page, "specialization" or something like that, if I remember correctly. You have to play long enough for the hero to get it

Literally my random tank this morning was trying to tell us that we had bad healers and we needed to basically swap to meta (cloak and luna) when he single handedly walked the team into a choke hold space with aoe and high damage enemies watching the way, and chose that route 3 times... We won the next two parts cause i and the healers could split up and divided the proper healing up amongst the team and keep ppl stable. Like no it wasnt healing that was the problem it was your bad position and route choice.
@twkandy70334 сағат бұрын
What tank were they playing? I understand bad positioning but shouldn’t the tank take the main path and get the most eyes on them as a frontline tank and if they are a ambush tank they would be going on the side and distracting enemies from different angles? I am a tank main and solo queue a lot but it hard for me to rank up and I feel like this positioning guide only work with dps and support mostly(it does help tank understand u can’t 1v6 and to be conscious of not trying to get kills in back line just distracting) but what happen when u can’t communicate with ur team as a solo queue. You won’t be able to read when to go in without getting spotted by their off angle dps or tank since your team not communicating with you when to go in making the enemy 1v6 you using their skills and entering cds and your team doesn’t capitalize on that.

@twkandy7033 he was playing strange on the wakanda map going through the mid room. (The dom map that has the spaceship platform with the staircase that opens and goes down from spawn) Diamond 3 (but there was a plat in the lobby so no ban.) But the enemy team had a magik, hela, thor, hulk, cloak, mantis ( three of these that bully strange ) and seeing this you'd think he'd not go into a roofed area to avoid the melee characters so that we could heal...but choose that way over and over...

This type of game is nothing new. The people who been playing TF2 to Overwatch and now to this would gradually have a better understanding of the game. Lots of people do not have the situation awareness. When they are in a fight all they worry about is looking straight ahead. Tank and supports usually fall into this tunnel vision situation. Just do a 360 scan every now and then to get a general of what's going on with your team and you will be greatly improve on the survival aspect of the game. DPS surprisingly are better at situational awareness. IDK why but most of the time when I ping for enemies in the back line the 1 who actually turn around and look are usually the DPSers. Same thing when I use the voice call for medic, instead of the support turning around and scan for medic call it's the DPSers.
@twkandy70334 сағат бұрын
I think it because the tanks are focus on tanking for the frontlines expecting the dps to take care of the close combat ambush dps usually.
@jaden57752 минут бұрын
@@twkandy7033true, but it also depends on what the enemy team is doing at the time, are they aggressively pushing up on your teams position from the front? Or are a majority of them (everyone but the dive dps pushing your back line) staying back and playing more passively waiting on their diver to pick off a support or two before pushing in? Cause if it’s the latter, then it’s better for the tank to turn and collapse on the diver with their team because dive dps usually don’t have a problem killing off supports and other dps characters even together if they’re targeting the right people first, the class they don’t have that luxury with is a 650-800+ health tank. Even if they manage to get away and you don’t kill the diver, crisis averted, your back line will have the time and space they need to regroup and heal and continue the push. But if they don’t feel pressured, dive dps can get away with a lot sometimes, especially Spider-Man.
