You are not losing resolution, it's always the same 5120x2160, you just losing the screen real estate... And using scaling is not making anything blurry, it only impacts performance, due to several scaling steps involved to process pixels in the mode you choose. The same applies to many monitors e.g. on all 32" 4k monitors everything is too small in native resolution, so the lower one needs to be used to have UI scale similar to Retina screen. I'd like to see some more controls on the scaling to match the scale of UI to the MacBook next to the monitor, so the windows moved from monitor to MacBook screen would be exactly the same size.

I have a 38" UW (and just ordered the LG 40WP95C), and despite the large screen estate I also use Windows virtual desktops to quickly switch between work and private setup. Also Windows Power Toys to quickly snap windows to a 1:1:1 or 1:2 layout. This alone has increased my productivity a lot as even a 38" UW was too small for the 10+ windows I have open when working - Slack, Discord, PHPStorm, Notepad++, Total Commander, VM for database access, Spotify, MusicBee and two Chrome instances (one for testing, one for everything else).

@@-Divertissement I'm pretty partial towards the 40WP95 because I've had it for most of the year now and am super happy with it. The only real downside is the 72 Hz refresh rate, so if you're into high refresh rates, I'd take the 38". I can't really say how they compare w.r.t. color fidelity which seems to be something you absolutely need.
@JamesCobalt2 жыл бұрын
You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding about how display scaling works in MacOS. You do NOT lose resolution when you use display scaling in MacOS. You are losing effective desktop space, but the effective number of pixels stays the same - it just makes everything scale up *as though* you were on a lower resolution monitor of the same size. It won't be blurrier, just bigger. If you have some low resolution item on screen (like an image file), that will be scaled up too and may look blurrier, but that's just because you're zoomed in on a low resolution item. All the UI stuff, vector stuff, game graphics, and high resolution images will remain just as sharp. This is the basis of Apple's "retina display" technology - using more pixels in the same space while scaling the size to an equivalent lower resolution. When you use a monitor from Apple, this display scaling is already in effect by default.
@GamexSean2 жыл бұрын
My SAMSUNG Odyssey G5 34-inch 2K Monitor can't open that display scaling option. Does that mean only a few monitor not from Apple can make display scaling in effect? Do you know which brand or product can do this?
@jamesspinella70532 жыл бұрын
@@GamexSean All 4K (and "5K") monitors should support macOS scaling. I haven't run across a 4K monitor that doesn't. 1440p or 1080p or anything else less than 4K you're stuck with the "blurry scaling" that is actually just using a lower resolution.
@jaybain43372 жыл бұрын
@@jamesspinella7053 I'm on an LG Ergo 4K 32" and can confirm what you said about upscaling, at least for this monitor. If I set to large text/less space scaling, everything is still razor sharp.
@jamesspinella70532 жыл бұрын
@@dbavatar What's he supposed to be mistaken about? With a 4K display you can scale 2x to get a 1920x1080-like picture. I would imagine 99% of users will use either 1x scaling (3840x2160) or 2x (1920x1080). You could pick a resolution that is not "scaled" and the display itself is showing less than 3840x2160 pixels, you're right about that. But with a 4K (or 5K, which is just 4K but more width) display, you'll always be able to 2x the scale of everything on the screen (so something that is 20x20 pixels becomes 40x40 pixels) and not "lose resolution". Ultimately I think you're both right.

🔥its very interesting seeing display scaling issues on a mac, that used to be a "perk" of the apple ecosystem that it had better scaling than windows btu looks to be no longer the case, both ecosystems have awkward implementations it seems
@JoeCastellon2 жыл бұрын
That scaling is not due to the Mac. It is because of the monitor's resolution. Using Picture By Picture yields two squared screens. Using the full screen will look fantastic on both Mac and Windows.
@jamesspinella70532 жыл бұрын
Windows 11 has better scaling at this point. You can scale on a 1440p monitor and if the monitor is far enough away from you, you can hardly tell the difference between that and 4K. There are some "hacks" to get the "good scaling" on macOS working on 1440p monitors, but you're capped at 60Hz on M1 Macs (also doesn't really work with more than one display). Intel Macs have a different "hack" that is much better. But if you're on 1440p rather than 4K I would think it's for a higher refresh rate than 60Hz, otherwise might as well go with 4K assuming you have the $.
@davegrenier11602 жыл бұрын
Application makers haven't yet caught on to making the controls (toolbars, menus, etc) of their apps scalable to be usable on high-resolution monitors at their native resolutions. Magnifying the view to be able to read an app's controls defeats the purpose of the monitor's high resolution. The only thing that helps alleviate this problem is more screen surface area. But not all high-res screens are widescreen, and you don't buy a high-res widescreen monitor (of any size) so you can use it at a lower resolution in order to read text on the screen.
@greg_2898 ай бұрын
Scaling is exactly what you’re describing. In modern UI frameworks there is little difference between zooming the interface and scaling up the OS. If your iPhone operated at its native resolution you wouldn’t be able to read anything! The picture is scaled up but still rendered at the native resolution. The video is wrong. You don’t “lose sharpness” when scaling the display up, it actually increases clarity.

I appreciate these videos, but 100% of them showing off these wide monitors with Macs always fail to show the most important part: Full Screened Apps in their own spaces. Is there the ability to separate the monitor into individual spaces/desktops? Perhaps the biggest reason from going from multi monitors to a larger wide screen for Mac users is to have these spaces to setup a superior work flow, being able to use the mouse or keyboard to swipe between screens in a specific work space. Have you tried this? Does it work? Can it be done?

For someone working in graphics you got it waaay wrong with the mac scaling and resolution. Nothing becomes blurrier as MacOS uses vectors instead of pixels, everything stays sharp. You are indeed losing “resolution” as in screen real-estate. What you are wishing for is impossible. You either use the native 5k one2one resolution and suffer eith glasses (it will be the same with the apple display btw) or you turn down scaling to something more human that doesn’t require you to sit face planted into the screen
