What up, bruv? How do you handle the slowdown (if any) in the workflow when you break them down to so many sub folders WHEN in the DAW side browser and have you ever tried to check your sounds outside the project for fast access? I currently break them down from their original pack folder to an instrument (one shot and loop for each one) but am currently looking to change my sorting system for easy orientation and fast access.

dont forget that its chill to leave samples in their native pack, if the pack is full of sounds you dig.... its up to you whether to gut it or not...........and in some instances I actually just copy some of the pack and put it in my folders and also maintain the original in a separate location, since, depending on my mood + current browsing scenario, one will be easier to find
@Unconsciouzone6 жыл бұрын
Some very useful tips here. I will remind you though that seperating sounds into categories that finite does have it's drawbacks, especially when it comes to drum one shots. If you break apart the set, you lose the cohesion of the recording session. For that reason I tend to keep packs together, and only break them down to the format level if say perhaps a pack comes with midi, one shots, loops and Sf2's I will seperate them that way, but I always keep the groups together.

most giant libraries of mine stay together, and then the smaller stuff gets gutted and organized.......Drums, FX, Foley, Eastern, Vocal, Bass, Synth (those types of categories...); and then i have (in the same level of folders) things like Vengeance, Zero-G, Wave Alchemy (things i dont want to break down),.... and then yet again in that same level of folders i have some really useful packs i've found just as they are, my sampled records digitized, serum oneshots, impulse responses, a folder of "earmarked" buildup energy noise stuff, and other niche folders ive either collected or just placed there

I save all my samples and put them in a Master Folder, then I make my custom organized library that is split into type instead of pack. Then if I want I can also go thru and make alias folders (from the master) of like dirty strings or whatever. This is how I organize most loops too instead of having 2 copies.

Im like the opposite everytime i go to write a song i get stuck in a sound design hole manipilating samples in ery way possible. I actually like to open Audacity to to play with samples so i can focus just on that one sample and mold it into a unique sound i can use in my production. Something about Audacity bare bones interface clears my mind.
@beatmeater52254 жыл бұрын
Good tips on here but to save having to rearrange your existing library just download and use ADSR. Its free and it tags your samples so organising them takes very little time. Example of use is say you have a house kick drum sample called kd245 or something random and when you search kick or drums it's never shown up. ADSR is clever and will tag this as house /kick / drum. You now search drum or house or kick just click on the drum tag and all those drums you never knew you had now appear. You can add tags too so you can you can create a favorites tag for your faves. I found a lot of samples I didnt know i had. If you have Ableton and decide to reorganise your samples as in the vid make sure to collect and save all sets/projects before moving any samples. Otherwise you'll then have to find all your samples in Ableton sample manager which will be a huge ball ache and you'll wish you never bothered. Just make sure you collect and Save when saving as this creates a copy of the sets samples in the project folder. A caveat with ADSR i think it only works for wav files so you wont be able to search for ableton aiff files (this that come with packs).

Once again great video , just what I was looking for... I would say the only thing missing would be color coordination...for example I seen Dj Dahi use this technique for his library... like blue sounds he has labeled as airy and warm sounds he may have labeled under orange, this is great becuz if ur starting a fresh track and u want a warm vibe, type in red in ur filing system and all warm sounds threwout ur library will come up ... this something I'm working on right now in my library
@BeatsbyVanity7 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that! I like that idea, and it's not something I've not heard or thought of before. Again though, it comes down to workflow. I personally prefer to work with instruments to capture the vibe I’m looking for. I’d also think this would be pretty difficult to label as surely they'd be crossover between what's an airy and a spacey sound for example?

This is nearly identical to my workflow. My biggest problem was actually finding a media player that allowed me to play sounds back within my pc folders because the windows player is too slow. I found something called Resonic. Anybody know of any others? Also recently i been thinking about storing my samples in folders markes with the key of song instead of instrument. And im thinking of turning my drums foldees into drumkits instead of individual drum sounds so i can access them quicker based on what sound i want.

Good tips and ideas. I just wish XO by XLN has 3rd party plugin hosting.
@BeatsbyVanity5 жыл бұрын
Have you got XO? I'm curious about it's workflow.
@matrixate5 жыл бұрын
@@BeatsbyVanity No, but they were really interested in the idea of 3rd party plugin hosting in an email I sent to them. The only thing that is holding me back is the exorbitant price. It's not that I can't afford it, it's the fact that there are a bunch of developers doing a similar take on this machine learning idea for sample mapping, like Atlas and Sononym. It seems like Sononym is the most useful BUT I like that sequencing that XO has. If I had to choose just one, I'd probably go with Sononym because it can find single shots similarly as XO but without the graphical UI. That said, I would imagine that this is going to eventually be integrated as part of most DAWs in the future. Something like this is too necessary not to have in a DAW especially when we live in a time where the amount of samples is growing exponentially. A tool like this in completely inevitable. So, as far as workflow, I think the best thing to do is get used to something like Sononym first because I think that is more powerful than XO in terms of overall sample management. Update: I've been using Sononyn for several hours and it is really stable and does a decent/fair job at finding similar samples. I like that it creates libraries to manage your samples as groups. The ONLY issue I have with all these plugins is that once you find samples that you like, you feel like renaming and moving files around. The problem with that, is that some people, don't collect and save files to the project folder and then file links become broken. If you moved and file and changed it's name...good luck trying to that find that sample again.
@BeatsbyVanity5 жыл бұрын
I feel the same about the price, although it’s more the lack of being able to demo XO. I hadn’t heard of Sononym but it looks similar to Samplism - seems more of a sample library organiser and browser. XO and Atlas are more aimed to be used in the creation process, putting together drum grooves and comparing various one shots, I think. I’ve used Atlas briefly as a demo and my fairly limited knowledge of XO suggests that they’re for creating drum grooves with, as apposed to just finding and organising your library. Perhaps a combination of Sononym/Samplism and XO/Atlas would work best?

What DAW do you use? I use ableton and I'm trying to figure my organisation out, because ableton has everything in the DAW itself. But I'm finding that when I rename or move things it's seems like it's not translating well in ableton for some reason
@BeatsbyVanity4 жыл бұрын
I use Ableton & Cubase. In Ableton you can drag a folder into the left hand side of the screen (on arranger view). After a few minutes, it should replicate the same structure in Ableton as inside the folder.

@@BeatsbyVanity Do you rename files that come from packs?
@BeatsbyVanity4 жыл бұрын
No, never. I’ll drop each category of sample in the given folder. I often just search now, so if say ‘kick’ isn’t in the same name it won’t index. Naming them is a sensible idea, just very timing consuming.

Great Video! How do I know if - for example - a kick is sounding Hard, Soft, Tight or Vintage? or another example if a Snare is Chill, Fat, Tight or Trappy? The list goes on and on and it's about describing sounds in a way someone can relate to. So here's the question: How can I learn proper terminology in describing Short bits of Music / Samples?
@BeatsbyVanity5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! A lot of it comes down to your perception of the sound. A vintage kick could be one that contains vinyl crackle, or frequency reduction of the highs and lows (like on vinyl/tape). A tight kick or snare is just short, without any or much of a tail. I'm not too sure about chill or trappy; perhaps they describe in what kind of context the sample could be used. A chill/minimal track, or a Trap song for example. I wouldn't say there's any proper terminology beyond perhaps, tight, fat, warm or vintage. At least, I don't use more adjectives than that. Fat to me is a large, beefy sound. Warm describes analog warmth which does contain terminology behind its description.
