I worked in a commercial greenhouse and our dippers were the markers we used to write on the tags with. Doesn't matter what you use of it gets you the desired results without ruining something. I really love your message of do what you can with what you have! Thanks for sharing all your stuff with us. I often would like a little more stuff, but then I'd have to keep track of it when I wasn't using it. For me if I put something away it sort of disappears, darn ADHD brain. Lol Someday I would however really like screens to sift my compost with. Until then I'll make do with what I have. 😊

You are right, the longer you garden, the more stuff you will have. Im going into year 5, and started with nothing. Being very budget focused, I try and make things last and get them at a good price. At the end of year one I found the cheap 72 cell seed starters for $.50 on clearance and bought 6 of them. I still have them, just wash them out and reuse. Being very budget focused doesnt mean I buy it all cheap. I save in other areas to buy quality items in other areas. When I buy the next 72 cell seed starters I will buy the best because I saved on the cheap ones.

@@eliandkate I do like how you repurposed the Ikea bins. I have found that you can get better quality things at a reasonable price if they are not specifically for gardening. I have a lot of compost to sieve, and this would make the job so much easier. I am planning a trip home to Scotland soon. I could bring one back if it's not too heavy. Maybe that is wishful thinking, lol. I am relatively new to growing vegetables and find your videos very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to create informative and entertaining videos. It's also nice to hear a Scottish voice.
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
Hey Lynne Not sure there’s a lot to it to make it interesting to be honest. I got it on Amazon, so if you want to properly go nosey, nip to the website in the description and go have a look, but basically it’s just the same idea as the hand sieves but much deeper. The handle just turns a bar on the inside that moves the compost around. The main thing is it’s just bigger holes so I can use it with fresh compost and it doesn’t get clogged up so easily.

It looks like greenhouse sensation has stopped trading. I wondered if you had any suggestions for getting replacement feeder matts or feed for the quad grows. I had a similar experience as yourself last year, in using organic feed we had smelly quad grows and blossom end rot. Much appreciated, Jeff.
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff That’s fab that we’ve inspired you 😀 I can actually give you some advice and… save you money too. So those feeder Matt’s, you can clean them and reuse them 😀 And when you do eventually wear it out… it’s just capillary matting, so you can buy meters of the stuff and just cut the size you need. I’ve been doing that for years. With the feed, I’ve been using tomatorite :) Like you say, avoid proper organic stuff like seaweed but big standard tomato feeds are fine. 😍

Haha I have exactly the same. Mine are sandwich and cake trays, in fact any of their trays that have a lid, they make perfect propagators, even the ones with shallow trays are great for collecting water as it drains through pots and trays, stops it dripping everywhere. I'm going to be starting begonia seeds in the next few weeks and I'm going to use the shallow moulded mince pie trays(not the foil but the plastic multi container) the seeds are tiny like pepper and don't need lots of soil so I'm thinking they will be fine for starting the tiny seeds which get lost in big trays and waste compost. Hi grate video like always i just want to ask do you have a heated greenhouse?
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
We’ll I have power so I have the option to heat, however I don’t need to heat it as I’m growing anything that needs it. Last year I started tomatoes and peppers early so I had to heat the greenhouse then but I’ve chosen to wait before I start those things this year.

I was wondering why some of my pots had green stuff growing at the to of them!! Pot too big. Well at least I know now. I have around 60 cuttings that successfully rooted, and are now in a cold frame outside. Fingers crossed they'll start to grow a little around March/April. All flowers, no veg. I wouldn't mind but I don't have any room for more flowers in my beds, I just like the experimenting. I've never dealt with cuttings before.
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
Ha ha ha I’m the same, I’ve got plans for heaps of new flowers but no clue where I’m gonna put them. The green stuff is cause you are over watering ( pots too big so it’s holding more water than the plant needs), hold back a little on the watering, if you can resist 😂😂😂

Hiya I’m a relatively new subscriber so catching up some vids over time, this might sound stupid but just watching this episode….I have gravel trays with & without holes. How do you use the 2? I tend to grow/transplant & put the pots etc into the trays without holes. What would I do with those with holes….just sit on a shelf to allow air to get underneath? Ta and yep appreciate that’s prob really thick😊
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
The ones with holes are for growing in, the holes are drainage. So those are what I call seed trays or flats The ones without holes are trays, the idea being you can sit your pots, other trays etc in there to catch water that drains out so it doesn’t go everywhere

It’s well worth taking the time to go look at physical greenhouses if you can. Although that’s not always easy. When I came across these, the difference between these and the others I was seeing was night and day. This brand are designed to stand up to high winds and heavy snow

Hi Eli, can you kindly tell me what the proper name is for the white board at the back of the greenhouse that you have attached your electrical boxes to? Also where you got it from. I would like to do something similar. Thanks in advance and also for you enthusiasm in doing your Chanel.
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
Hey Peter Em We made it. It’s a custom made board with our logo that we laser cut For mounting sockets you could use any kind of board, we just happened to want one with our channel logo on it.

Eli, is your greenhouse heated? I can see a lot of small seedlings in there, and just thinking of how cold it must still be in Scotland right now
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
I have power in my greenhouse but no I’m not running heat. Everything you see is winter hardy and mostly been growing over winter. I try to keep growing all year if I can, so have had a greenhouse full of hardy greens all winter plus some foxgloves and bits and pieces. The onions were sown in Boxing Day.

My homemade compost always has loads of woodlice in it, how do you get rid of them, or are they good for the soil?
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
I find they all leave as soon as I disturb it. They don’t do heaps of damage, but can if there are loads of them. Especially strawberries
