The Sega Master System was my first game console ever. I remember buying the console from a store called Toy Liquidators around 1990 -- the entire system, two gamepads with Hang On as a pack-in for $29.99, a Sega Refurbished Unit. One of the best days of my life and I still own it to this day.

One of the smartest moves I think Sega ever made was making the Game Gear essentially a portable Master System. Since the MS was still very popular in Europe and Brazil, Sega could basically make games for both consoles at the same time.

Hey man! Very nice video, not unlike the 7800 one. A couple notes: Harrier flies using a jetpack AND he wields a laser cannon. Also, there was no arcade hardware called AM2, but a development team within Sega. The hardware was actually called "Sega Space Harrier" (!)

I never knew about this console until I was in college. I grew up with a Nintendo and later a Genesis console. By the time I finally had a chance to play the console, it was in the early 2000's through emulation. I bought a brand new Game Gear at the time and despite being able to get 2 new games at purchase, the store barely had any games. I decide to try emulation out to see what other games were out for the system, that's when I stumbled upon the Sega Master System.

Something similar happened to me. I had the NES and then the Genesis. Funny thing is, by having the Genesis, we also had a Master System without knowing... Genesis is backward compatible with the Master System, not by emulation but by including all the hardware components. One just had to buy the "Power Base Converter", a passive adapter (passive means it has no circuits inside, only bus tracks redirected to the right pins because sms cartridge pins are mislocated for the Genesis cartridge slot....) Having the adapter, You play Master System games on Genesis as in original hardware....

You for sure got a sub. Don't know what people are thinking. You know these smaller channels are so much better than the bigger ones. I mean by miles yours and theirs meaning other small channels content just so good it's so refreshing. It's like the bigger ones they just quit trying once they get to a certain status quo. It's kind of sad really. We look about the same age (1972) so I guess there are other people like me. That's a good thing to know. Man thank you for the well researched quality content means a lot.

Great video...my generation played "Atari" that's how engrained that company was. I just discovered your channel and have subscribed, your videos are well done....for THIS video, it was a bit unfair to bash the SMS sound when you didn't try out the FM sound. The soundtracks were pretty epic. The Phantasy Star section should have 1 addendum, while FF launched in Japan in 1987, it didn't get ported until 1990 for North America. From MY perspective, Phantasy Star was a vastly superior game that came out 3 years before Final Fantasy....which honestly made me a Sega fan. Also, Joe Montana Football vs EA/Madden comments in this video apply to the Genesis/Megadrive games, not the port for SMS. Also, do yourself a solid, pick up Golvellius asap. Thanks for this walk down memory lane. I had NES and SMS during this Gen, and enjoyed them both. This system was an underappreciated gem.

The Master System II is one of the easiest consoles to mod for composite out and RGB. I have mine with the RF module removed and the Mega Drive II 9 pin mini-DIN in its place with composite, audio and RGB wired up and use the Mega Drive II RGB-SCART cable to display on my TV, amd the image is absolutely perfect... No need to make holes in the case or anything, and as I said, a really easy mod to do with direct wires, no components needed. Oh, and there is a very easy mod also to add 3D glasses compatibility just adding a jack on the front... iPhones can't hardwire a jack so easily!! xdd Another huge advantage the SMS has is that it's region free, so the US can enjoy games from other regions which have a huge library in comparison, without having to mod the console in any way.

The 3D glasses breaking was very common. I rented a pair back when you could rent these systems and components back in the 80’s. The moment I put them on, one side broke. They aren’t designed to last nor to fit very well over glasses or on people with big heads. I have a pair of 3D glasses now and I rarely pull them out to use them. I’ve considered trying to reinforce the arms and hinge points, possibly with spring hinges like you find on some prescription glasses frames, but the value would tank if I ever decided to sell my collection.

I've had good luck using a Asus VR-100G glasses instead of original Sega ones. I found that most of them were overpriced and broken but it was easier to get a just the adapter and cheaper glasses option. The Asus VR-100G were cheap at the time and seem to work well for me but note that I never found a "side-by-side" testimonial to confirm the experience is exactly the same. Still, it might be a good option if you just want to play without breaking your originals :)

I keep an old CRT around just for playing light gun games. I don't know what happened to my 3-D glasses. They were so cool for their time. Also, my SMS light gun no longer works but my Lethal Enforcers guns for the Genesis are definitely my favorite light guns. BTW, my right hinge broke off my 3-D glasses when they were only a few years old. I was able to shape some very thick wire and attach it and was able to use them for years until they got lost during a move.

the same 3D "shutter" technology was used by several companies over the years. You can try replacing 3D glasses using other shutter glasses that use the same style stereo jack. Last year I wanted to get the Sega 3D glasses to try for fun, but while the adapter isn't too expensive, the glasses were kind of overpriced and usually broken! I did some research and I managed to get good results with the Asus VR-100G which were pretty cheap at the time. Also I heard that you can use the Nintendo 3D glasses that were only released in Japan although I don't think this is the cheapest option.

When I was a kid my library on the system included Hang On/Safari Hunt, Space Harrier, Rambo FBP2, Zillion (my absolute favorite on the system), After Burner, Penguin Land, and a few others that I'm not thinking of right now. Plus there was a rental shop not far from me where I got exposed to gems like Choplifter, Shinobi, and the grotesquely underrated Zillion II: The Triformation (no, it's not as good as the original, but it's far from terrible).

The sega master system is literally a power house , compared to the nes, 1,it has a 3,5mhz Z80 cpu, 2, 8K of ram, 3, it has builtin h/v and diagonal scrolling, 4, it could view 32 colors from a pallet of 64, 5 each tile & sprite can have 16 colors, 6, the ligh phaser can detect targets on screen via a pixel base level rather then a frame level, 7,It has 64K rom and it can access 512K of rom via additional pins so no external bankswitching is needed. 8, it has line scrolling builtin to mimmick 16bit graphics, 9, it’s psg soundchip is more flexible wich allows you to simulate pcm sound, and the jap sms has even a fm chip builtin, 10, the sms can also do 1024 tiles onscreen atonce, The nes in comparision is weak despites having a pcm soundchannel, but for other features such as line and diagonal scrolling etc,,, it required a mmc3 chip to do such thing, mario 3 can run on a stock master system but not on a stock nes, and since we back then didn’t knew about these expansion chips hidden in nes games, we always tout that both systems were nearly equal in performance to eachother,,but nope the sms is truelly a powerbase system.

You missed the Mark 2 which was an upgraded Mark 1. Unfortunately, it was weaker than the Famicom and lacked the games. The Mark 3 is much, much stronger than the Mark 2 and brought back the "Card Catcher" device (Mark 2 didn't have one). The Mark 3 is essentially a Master System and man does it look cool. It didn't do well and Sega wanted to unify the consoles and released the Master System in Japan. This console did have the ability to be upgraded with an FM Sound Synthesizer. You can do this as well with an American Master System with some modifications. ;) Alex Kidd was not included with every Master System. The original Control Deck *no lightgun version came packaged with a cart that had both Astro Warriors and Hang-On. The Action Set *with lightgun had Safari Hunt and Hang-On installed onto the system. Every Master System did come with a secret game *Snail Maze that can be accessed by turning the machine on without a game inserted. You must hold both button 1+2 and up at start-up for this to work. Snail Maze is a timed maze game that featured a snail going through 12 different mazes. Psycho Fox was created by the same people that made Decap Attack for the Sega Genesis. It plays almost identically minus transforming characters and the ability to...jump glide too the ground. Space Harrier was an arcade game originally released in 1985. It featured the same type of gameplay for the Master System. Although severely limited it did look somewhat like the arcade albeit much, much slower. The PC Engine and TG-16 got a version of the first game that played much better without the checkered flooring. You covered the Genesis and 32X ports; However, I have never heard of the realistic version before, it sounds interesting.

Wow, Europeans got shafted by Sega (the base Master System without the gun came packaged with Astro Warriors and Hang On in 1986). I say that as an owner of a Sega Master System when it was brand new...almost day one(still have it). What's funny is my parents even though they were divorced got along. So they worked together in order to make...say Christmas awesome for me. My mother and stepfather bought me the NES almost a year before while they were in New York on business. At that time, finding video games at a store was an iffy proposition. Most stores did not carry them and would look at you like you are crazy if you said the word- "Nintendo" to them. My parents truly thought that Nintendo closed shop and packed up. When my father saw the Sega Master System advertised in Toys R" US magazine he knew I would love it. What's funny was my father purchased two Nintendo games with the Master System and that is how we found out that...gaming was back in a BIG WAY! From that point foward we purchased the best version that came out and started my love of owning everything. I did it with the Sega Genesis/Sega CD/32X through the Snes, the 3DO, Jaguar, and built my own haming PC. Today my fiance and I are building a home arcade complete with arcade cabinets (we currently have 5). You will not find a pool table nor Foose Ball in my arcade as they are not video games (pet peeve of mine is when people call a billiard hall an arcade...no, just no). In our master bedroom we have two 4K UHD screens and two of every current gen console including the One X/PSPRO. HOLY SHIT....Bad Apple...HOLY SHIT! Are you freaking kidding me, Sega does what Nintindon't! Oh and the Master System 2 was ugly, has no composite, no led (seriously Sega), and the Card Catcher is gone. What the Hell were they thinking? I have never seen the lightgun with a red tip...how stupid.

The Master System won't play Game Gear games because the Game Gear actually has 12bit colour to the Master System's 6bits. The Mega Drive contains all the Master System hardware within it's chipset - the Power Base Converter merely connects the metal pins to the different shaped cartridge slot. It's a shame it didn't do better in the US, at least as well as the NES because the NES defined gaming for most Americans. But as a European I struggle to get into NES games nowadays, retrospectively as they seem so much more basic than what Sega offers on it's 8bit system. I feel the same way about the Mega Drive. I feel Nintendo really stole the USA's hearts but what Sega offered as a gaming experience was far superior.

I heard from Metal Jesus that a child was actually shot and killed by a policeman, holding up the Light Phaser - leading to the red nose. I don't know if that is actually true though.

Since we have a law banning guns in Brazil for a long time now some criminals make their own guns and since that Sega gun could be a home made gun the police weren't taking any chances.

I had the NES and the SMS back in 1987, and I found myself playing the SMS more. With games like Phantasy Star, Golvellius, Kenseiden, Space Harrier, and the Wonder Boy games....How can you resist Sega games?

Hang-On was not just released on a combo cart - it was the first generation pack-in for the Sega Master System, on a combo cart with Safari Hunt for the "Master System" package (with 2 controllers and the Light Phaser) or Astro Warrior for the "Power Base" package (2 controllers but no Light Phaser).

The Master System 2 was my first console :) Still have my original one, but currently use a Master System 1, because it has more functions and better video out. Almost have a full PAL set of games now. I agree that the 3D glasses are impressive. The Phaser is indeed a great light gun. I actually think Sonic The Hedgehog is even better on Master System. I played Miracle World soooo much as a little kid (the boss has nudity as well, by the way).

Looks like that version of Road Rash has a better frame rate than the Genesis version. I'm also impressed with the graphics of some of the later releases. A few of the games wouldn't look too out of place on something like the TG-16 or Genesis.

I wonder what you meant when you said Hang-On was the first arcade coin-op to use 16-bit graphics. To my knowledge arcade cabinets had 16-bit CPUs in them since around 1980, five years before Hang-On was released.
@PlayerOneStart
@PlayerOneStart 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. My exact words were "Hang on was "ONE" of the first..." My intention was NOT to imply that this was "THE" first 16-Bit game. I wanted to emphasize the 16 Bit Arcade Board for this game, as it heavily influenced the design of Sega's next console, the Genesis/Mega Drive, touting 16 Bits. Hope this helps clarify what I meant. Thanks for watching!
@elimalinsky7069

@@PlayerOneStart Thank you so much for clarifying :) I wasn't trying to nitpick, I just wanted to emphasise the popular misconception in regard to word sizes and graphics, as there is no such thing as 8-bit or 16-bit graphics, since the bits only refer to the word size of the general-purpose registers in the CPU (which is further confusing when you discover that the Mega Drive had 32-bit registers, but marketed as a 16-bit system). Best way to showcase this is the Commodore 64, which was 8-bit, and the early IBM PC, which was 16-bit. The former had much better graphics and sound in games than the latter, at least initially.

@@elimalinsky7069 I would regard the graphical accelerator's internal bus width as the definitive measure of a machine's BIT's bragging rights but f course there are dozens of different bit widths across internal and external buses, all different over the various chips on any given chipset. The Dreamcast for instance had a true 128bit PowerVR gpu. Impressive!
@elimalinsky7069
@elimalinsky7069 4 жыл бұрын
@@iwanttocomplain I would not use one form of measurment, as there isn't one definite way to measure a system's graphical or logical capabilities. All components and features must be taken as a whole. For example. The SNES had a weak CPU, but a strong GPU. The Mega Drive had a strong CPU, but a weak GPU (I use the term GPU very loosly, because only the final rendering was done by the graphics chip, unlike modern GPUs that do everything display-wise). The Mega Drive could achieve some incredible things like scaling and rotation in software, without the need for a hardware Mode 7, just due to the fact how powerful that 68x processor was, as opposed to that puny Ricoh chip, which was a glorified 6502 with an extension for 16-bit registers, but still using an 8-bit memory bus.
@iwanttocomplain
@iwanttocomplain 4 жыл бұрын
@@elimalinsky7069 Mega Drive GPU runs at 14Mhz. Thats pretty beefy. It can't do logical operations though as it's not a processor it's strictly a tile and sprite moving chip. It can scroll columns horizontally which is a neat trick and lead to some nice effects. The SNES PPU's are not very powerful and they are locked to the speed of the cpu so combined can achieve a maximum of 7Mhz. But you are right, there are alot of bus pipelines and such which is why the Mega Drive and it's DMA unit and integrated circuitry make it significantly more powerful than the SNES despite both being tagged as 16bit.

I’m sad that you ignored top games such as Asterix, Power Strike 2, Master of Darkness, Luck Dime Caper, Wonder Boy in Monster World , Mortal Kombat, Batman Returns etc , barely Road Rash, to show Altered Beast, After Burner etc... also you should mention that Nintendo lost in Brazil, South Korea and Europe... , the FM sound was such an advance, and the NES sound also seems generic (and unsync) but it was normal on that time...
