This guy was very articulate and wise. What a pleasure for the pipe smoker to listen to. He has a lot of Mark Twain in him, which was a very famous pipe smoker. From what I gather he lived not far from Mark Twain's house in Hartford, CT. Many of the great minds (writers, actors, politicians) of the 19th and 20th century were pipe smokers. I see this quality in John. Pleasure to listen to.

We still miss and love you John. This is probably my 5th or 6th time watching this episode and never commented. But I feel to do so now. The coveted nirvana/ultimate smoke....yep it's hard to come by. I've had probably a good 14 solid Nirvana smokes in 20yrs at the Briar. I've attempted FORCING the Ultimate smoke to some success, but fall short of victory. I've had Virginia, Va/Per, Va/Bur, Burley, English, Balkan Ultimate smokes. I've tried using the season, mood, briar/cob/meersh, flake fold, weather, geography ect to some succuss, but never Truely Ultimate smoke. I've realized that you must attempt a solid good smoke at a consistant basis and be satisfied. Just say yep that was a great smoke and be happy with the result. I truly feel it's a matter of chance that it TAKES place. It will come out of nowhere too....like this one time I went to pick up a friend from his workplace and he didn't get off on time so I loaded some C&D Heritage Two Friends Blend in a Stanwell Poker and had one of the best smokes of my life! Even though it's just what I'd call a Premium Codger blend and think it's JUST ok...who would have known I'd be a killer smoke. Why can't this happen when I pack some SG Chocolate Flake in my Viking Apple in a cabin, sitting next to a fire, sipping on some Bourbon in Winter Park, CO in a snow storm? I think it's just in the stars or fate....I don't know. I just strive to have a solid good smoke on a regular basis. What do you guys think:?

It really is amazing I’ve had some good smokes but one day at work I put some half and half in a cob at work (I brought the pouch of half and half with me to work because I thought it was just ok) that day though for whatever reason I was in heaven idk what was special about that particular smoke but for about 30-45 minutes everything was perfect

I discovered this channel for two days, I wanted to write to you, share moments, then I read that you're gone and I felt a deep sadness, yet I didn't know you. So I took my Radice pipe, filled it with crumbled Toscano cigar (Italian Kentucky dark fired) and Half & Half in your honor, to your places. Such a meditative smoke thinking of your words so true thousands miles away, that was a great smoke. Hello mate, Rip and a big hug from Italy.

I have found a way to reach my "ultimate smoke" more frequently. I usually load up at least 3 bowls per smoke session. I false light all 3 and I usually include one English/Balkan blend within the 3 pipes I light up. I proceed to smoke one at a time and the moment the pipe I'm smoking becomes warm, I switch on over to a cold pipe. This keeps things interesting to me and you will be surprised at how the flavors come out when you contrast them with different blends within one smoking session. That my friend, is how I reach my ultimate smoke almost daily.

Ahh, great stuff! For me, it was just a regular sunday evening. Was planning on going to bed pretty early to get enough sleep for monday morning, but I wanted to have one final bowl before sleep. So I got out with a cheap no name pipe and (I think) some Capstan Blue. Went out, fired it up and thought about nothing, really. Then it hits me: Damn, what a beautiful sunset! My god, there were birds flying in the rust colored sky, the sun just going down behind the tall downtown buildings, a plane going in for the landing; far away by the airstrip... And all of this through a thick cloud of viriginia! I have never felt so content with life; feeling the nicotine slowing everything down and relaxing the whole body, with all this beauty around me! The perfect Nirvana moment; it will probably never happen again, but I cherish the memory...

Nice talk, John. I had one last Tuesday afternoon. I was at my sons house sitting on his front porch. It faces a beautiful tree lined street with English tudor style houses. I had walked my grand-daughter in the carriage around the neighborhood for about an hour or so, and she had fallen asleep in it. I parked the carriage on the porch, went inside and got my pipe. I recently ordered SG Full VA Flake, and had brought that along. The late afternoon sun was strong, but gentle, with a slight breeze. I rigged up an umbrella with a bungee cord and attached it to the carriage handle, shielding me from the sun. I lit up, and smoked for about an hour and fifteen. The baby sleep the whole time. It was great. Thanks, John. Take Care. Ed

…and another great video by Mr. Matches860! In addition I would like to say that for "the ultimate smoke" I don't need much: A bowl of Mac Baren Plumcake or Sillem's Black (for already months now) and any pipe smoking video of yours! I am so happy you have so many videos. It means a lot of smoking pleasure still to come :) The tobacco preference can change eventually it will, but your hanging out with you will be the ingredient that stays in order to achieve "the ultimate smoke". Hi John, This was a great video! I have given a lot of thought to this topic over the years and have very much the same thoughts and come to many of the same conclusions as you have. We are always chasing after that ultimate smoke. Actually I can say I was always chasing after it, but as I've aged I have just learned to let it come to me. Chasing is not worth it. Rose ultimate smoke will come when they come, and I have had many in the past 35 years. The entire pipe smoking journey, good, mediocre, bad and sublime has been one I feel privileged to be a part of both inwardly to who I am and in knowing others like you are enriched by. It is a beautiful fellowship. Thank you. For me, of all the "Ultimates", only one was sublime. Sublime in the way when you hear a piece of music and shed a tear. Mid 80's, Peterson 309, Bell's Three Nuns, arriving home from college. I lit up on the train (you could do that then) it got better and better. Arrived home and locked myself in my room for privacy. Just sat and smoked. The memory of that experience will never leave me.

I love it when the ultimate smoke happens. I find it to be almost always unexpected. It generally comes along when I find a nice quiet, comfortable spot with a favorite pipe. Pack the bowl, light it up and relax; next thing I know I'm enjoying one of the best experiences one can know. That kind of thing never happened when I smoked cigarettes all those years ago. I also agree, unless you've experienced it it is almost impossible to explain. Take care, John, and enjoy your weekend. Thanks for the video!

Great subject, John. The elusive, yet achievable ultimate smoke. It appears when you least expect it. I am a cellist, with a degree, and have performed professionally, though those days are over for me. I relate pipe smoking to cello playing. It is an art, and takes years to master. Simply because there are so many variables that the smoker is in control of. Thanks for your thoughts, which are always thought provoking.

Thanks for making videos. New or relatively new serious pipe smokers like me benefit more than you could know from your input. Personally, I appreciate being exposed to a lot of different tobaccos that would take years for me to find otherwise. Speaking of that, I owe a HUGE thanks to you for recommending C&D Burley Flake #4. I am absolutely head over heels with the flavor. I can only handle one semi large bowl a day, but it's one the most enjoyable bowls I've ever had - especially love it with fresh coffee. Probably the closest I've come to what are talking about in this video happened with.C&C Burley #4. Thanks again for all of your time and energy. Glad that I found your channel so early in my "career". Good health and much joy to you. Cheers.

John, Great ramble on the “ultimate smoke.” Early morning smoke in solitude does lend itself to experiencing the moment that makes pipe smoking so special. I often spend a long time at the computer with a writing project and agree that while smoking a pipe (with a large bowl) helps with the concentration while writing, one does tend to lose focus on the tobacco. Taking a break to savor the tobacco does help restore the soul. I also find that in times of stress, a break to take the time to just sit and focus on the tobacco and that particular moment in your life, allows one to savor the good and clear your mind. I call those moments “sanity breaks.” Recently I have been smoking a blend called Lane’s 1Q, purchased from Pipes and Cigars, an uncomplicated blend that is very similar to one I used to purchase in the 1970s from a now closed B&M they called IQ-40 for some reason. Sometimes these old blends work, sometimes they do not. This one works for me. As usual, your video brought peace to a cluttered mind. It is appreciated.

I can totally relate about the experience with smoking pipe tobacco. I just had that spectacular unexpecteded experience a few nights ago. I took off the shelf McClelland's Yenidje Supreme that's been sitting since 2010. I filled the bowl and within about 10 minutes I thought to myself, this is a great smoke! I think everything has to lineup, quality tobacco, your mood, and what's going on around you at the time you're smoking your pipe. Thanks for sharing, have a great weekend. Art

John: As always, brilliant! By the way, are you old and 59 like me yet? :) I couldn't agree more; the "state of the smoke" has SO much to do with not just the tobacco and even the pipe at times, but our mind set and if we are willing to allow ourselves to be STILL. Then, we can, at times have THAT SMOKE! By the way, I liked that noise in the backround (REALLY!), I found it to be restfull, including the sound of a hydraulic nail gun... I guess, like EVERYTHING else, our attitude defines our altitude! Have a great weekend! Dan

I dug up this five year old video. It was a great one. My first ultimate smoke was back in the 1980's. I had been struggling with pipe smoking, not packing it right, smoking way too fast and smoking Borkum Riff Whiskey in a Dr. Grabow. Finally I bought some Prince Albert one day and went down to my small 21 foot sailboat. It was winter cold and I was planning to sleep on the boat at the dock. No wiring so I was using a kerosene lantern. I cooked my dinner of rice and chicken noodle soup on the little camp stove and drank a little whiskey. I loaded up my Dr. Grabow which was finally broken in and managed to accidentally pack right. I fired it up and that Prince Albert was awesome. It might have been the whiskey and the atmosphere in that cabin but that pipe was the deepest, richest, tobacco flavor I had ever experienced. I smoked it slow instead of like a freight train and the whole time I was thinking that THIS is what I've been looking for. It was an eye opener and I'll never forget it.

Hey Matches! I've been enjoying your videos. Your mellow style forces me to slow down and relax... kind of like smoking a pipe. You often refer to your Friday Savinelli, which made me wonder, how many pipes do you use in a day? Do you ever re-smoke the same pipe more than once in a day? I've never had luck with that, but maybe you know something I don't. If you're ever in Raleigh come by for a smoke!

Daniel Moreland Hi Daniel & thanks for your support. I normally smoke the same pipe all day, which is why I lean towards Savinellis and Butz-Choquins. There's something about their briar which allows them to smoke dry all day long. I just don't get that with most other pipes.

Great video! I think the ultimate smoke as all about discovery. That's why it happens with tobaccos that we haven't previously been too hot on. I think it can also be about discovering or rediscovering what we like about a certain pipe. It's the thrill of the blissful moment but also an excitement over a new facet of the hobby.

Good video as ever John. I like to smoke every day and miss it if I don't. But the odd thing is that if for some reason I haven't been able to smoke for 2 or 3 days (work and travel) I find that the first smoke after the break is usually sublime. The taste buds and olfactory senses seem to be heightened. So I think that in a very real sense, less could well be more! Best, Paul

I get what you mean by an ultimate smoke, for me they seem to happen randomly, I've not managed to spot a pattern to them. They've happened late at night when I was too lazy to go to bed so I had "one more pipe", or the first pipe of the morning after breakfast or when reading my usual news sites. The last one was out of the blue the other day when I was busy doing some "research" chasing down via Google. As too often happens I, without thinking had loaded up a pipe and lit up. It just worked and all my frantic on-line searching just stopped and the smoke took over. It was a common combination of Orlik Golden Slice (my favourite) in a Peterson Emerald 80s (one of my "go to" pipes), but it turned out to be an uncommonly good experience. I never did finish the "research", it would have ruined the mood so I had a mug of tea and read a book for a couple of hours instead. Perhap they happen just when your stars align just so. :-)

I know exactly what you mean. I had the best smoking experience I've had so far 2 or 3 weeks ago, but then I smoked that same blend again yesterday and it seemed much more bland for some reason. It really takes a combination of the right blend to fit the right mood at the right time in the right place while you're in the right frame of mind etc. But when it happens... beautiful!

I’ve had maybe one or two ultimate smokes in the few years I’ve been a pipe smoker. The first one occurred when I tried some Sutliff Rum and Maple, it’s still one of my go to blends. The other was with some Frog Morton’s Cellar, wow what a smoke that was! I probably could smoke it all day every day, but unfortunately it’s no longer produced so I’m cellaring it for special occasions. I agree that you kind of have to be in a good mood and have everything going for you in life. Awesome video matches! Edit: I am going to the beach later this year to celebrate an anniversary, what blends would you suggest to try?

Sometime those ultimate smokes don't seem all that special (meaning no fireworks are going off or you aren't watching a fantastic sunset from the penthouse balcony) at the time. I have a video called "Autumn Ramble" or some such title and it turned into an ultimate smoking moment which I was lucky enough to notice to point out during the video. So many factors go in to these great moments despite being so simple. I'd love to see your thoughts on pipe smoking psychology. It's an interesting subject and would make for great watching. Excellent vid as always! I would have to say the ultimate smoke has more to do with the circumstances than the pipe and tobacco. I don't think you can plan for it. Sometimes the conditions seem conducive but for what ever reason it falls flat. It just has to happen on its own in an organic way.

I'm a huge fan of mixtures blended with Orientals and if you like Balkan Sobranie, I think you'd enjoy Peterson's Old Dublin; it's my all day, every day smoke. It's not Latakia-heavy, so it won't burn out your palette, the Orientals(Basma) are inexplicably delicious, and the Virginias combined with a little bit of black Cav mellow and slightly sweeten the lot. Truly a unique experience, at any time of year.
@Matches860
@Matches860 9 жыл бұрын
DarkM4773r I'm still into cigar leaf in blends, and keep the Balkan Sobranie around just as a change of pace. Orientals don't do a lot for me, in fact, I still find it difficult to pick them out in a mix. It may be a bit unusual, but I do like latakia used lightly as well as heavy.
@DarKm4773r
@DarKm4773r 9 жыл бұрын
Matches860 I haven't tried a cigar leaf blend yet, but it's on my list, as I enjoy an occasional cigar. It might be just me, but it seems as if Peterson uses a good amount of Orientals in the mix; either that, or I'm sensitive to the flavor profile of that leaf. I like light to medium Latakia use in a blend, but I can't seem to bring myself to try anything heavy in its use, due to fear of fatiguing my palette.

question: i love cigars....and would like to try a pipe. can you recommend a pipe that would be good in a sailboat cockpit, you know, that wouldnt get blown out and start a fire...maybe a deeper bowl/ i dont know- ...plus, what type of tobacco should i try? With stogies, i like thick strong smoke...but my wife hates the smell --can you recommend a tobacco that i would like, and then something sweet smelling that i could smoke when i'm around her? Thanks!

Sailing Nervous Most pipes will do for sailing I think, you just need to decide if you want a bent or straight stem...it's all a personal thing. If you're unsure about a pipe, just spend 10 bucks on a corn cob. At the moment, many folks are raving about the new Captain Black Copper tobacco which you might find at a local convenience store.

I myself am just new to this amazing gift called pipe smoking. However, you don't really set a pipe down somewhere to let burn, like a cigar or cigarette, which is a part of it's design. Very hands-on, and meant to be held, whether by your mouth or hand. If you're looking for something to keep it from blowing ash everywhere, they make special caps for them I believe. I'll see if I can find you a link

As the athletes call it, you were in your zone. Never know when that happens. I am pretty new to pipe smoking (started august of 2014), and I cannot say that I had an Ultimate smoke yet. I had some very pleasant one, but it seems that I have not been able to put everything on my way for a perfect smoke yet. Being in a zone happens in very unpredictable places and times. Happens to me mostly when I am hicking in the woods, being on a top of a hill and watching the view (never had a pipe smoke at that time, but that could probable work for me to have an Ultimate smoke). Take care!
