@@aygwm The C60 can handle a fair bit over the stock 192hp for ages, as long as it's maintained properly, if you still have the original oil in there after 250-300k km and 20+ years then yeah, you will get problems. The gear ratios are one thing that makes the cars engaging to drive, with a short shifter and all metal shifter bushings the shifts also feel really satisfying

@@tyreksimmons4167 As a owner of a 2000 celica, the transmission sometimes has issues shifting at high gear. I mainly have issues going from 2-3 just because i hesitate a little because of all the moneyshifting stories that circulate about this car/transmission. There is one main issue that i noticed in multiple transmissions, they all have synchro problems. if you dont rev-match perfectly, the car will punish you with a nice grind. This has happened with both transmissions ive had and in 3 of the cars ive test drove. Over all its not bad, like tom said, the short gearing is what allows this engine to shine

mathewceron4384 it could just be my slow shifting due to the trans resisting shifting after like 6000 rpm; but I never had a grinding problem. Again, you sound your much more experienced with manual cars than I am, and are able shift fast enough to achieve the condtion to grind gears between shifts.

I'm a moderator for two different channels and I have my own channel separate from this channel. People's comments can be erased for several different reasons of course using certain words can get your message taken down but a moderator or the show's Creator can accidentally remove your comment I've had it happen and seen it happen quite a few times I highly doubt that he would take down a comment as simple as you asking for a Honda tier list. @@soupatroopuh3696 The NA L series? Nothing wrong, they are just not in any way impressive. Their fuel efficiency is similar to a K series, but with much less power. They are reliable, but so are most engines with proper care. The turbocharged L series has had issues with head gaskets and oil dilution and they have pretty limited tuning potential even in the Si, but again, with proper maintenance, most people won't have issues with them.

The 1.8L 7K was the most popular engine here in indonesia, with the carburated version being produced up until 2007 on the 4 speed manual kijang pickup. Unfortunately it is also one of the most terrible engines when it comes to fuel efficiency. It gets about the same fuel economy as a v6 engine (6-7km/l or 16mpg) while only making 82hp...

Good video the A series also has the 20 valve 4age which was the first toyota engine to use vvt. The 2zzge has toyotas version of vtec which has a noticable increase in power at 6200rpm both very reliable.

The 1AZ-FE in my mom's '01 RAV4 did not consume oil, but it developed a rod knock at 420k km. I swapped a 2AZ from a Camry in it, but didn't get it completely finished, as the head gasket was blown and my time went into moving houses. Not having the space to store that project is something I regret.

4AFE will always be my favorite. I had a 1993 Corolla and my friend has a 1992. with 440,000 miles, it ran fantastic and I had no doubts that it could make 1,000,000 if the new owner tries. It can also be revved to the moon 😂

AZ oil consumption issues, it's mainly year specific problem. the earliest iterations of these engines were just as stout and reliable as any toyota engine. Toyota did a mid cycle update that added low tesion piston rings causing all the oil burning. That being said i still do argee about the placement solely do the sheer amount of cars sold with the updated engine, and the with a range spanning so many years (in certain models) It deserves that spot on the list.

Earlier years had issues with the head bolts. Northstar Performance, known for bulletproofing Cadillac Northstar V8 engines also has a SureGrip kit for Toyota 2AZ-FE engines as well.

i used to deliver medical supplies for a living with a 2AZ xB that i stripped the interior out of after noticing that a windshield seal was leaking water into the floorboards... by the time i spun the bearings in it omw home one night it was drinking a solid quart a night (250-300 miles), barely smoked at all somehow 😂 it was such a fun car with the waterlogged interior gone, felt like a go kart for big kids

@@enchantereddie I would probably say B tier. It's a solid engine with decent fuel economy and power, but by no means were they built for performance. You see people adding force induction to scion TC's but u won't find many going past 300hp on stock internals.

I'm surprised the ZR was placed so low. At least in its North American application in the Corolla, there were not really any major issues beyond the VVT-i cold start rattle in the early revisions and oil burning caused by poor maintenance.

Very few engines are truly flawed and can't last a long time IMO, some just are just more susceptible to damage from abuse and neglect than others. No engine with low tension piston rings (which is most engines from the 2000's on) responds well to dirty oil. Even the Honda K series will easily get stuck rings and start burning oil if it's not maintained properly. Really not the fault of the manufacturer IMO.

Same. ZR is a solid improvement over the ZZ. Whenever I see someone bring up reliability of the ZR it's typically because of documented issues with the Hybrid application.

The zz piston ring problem was caused by a 2$ pcv valve that would fail sticking open and allowing oil to get sacked up into the intake. This would then burn in the cylinder causing immense carbon build up and in turn causing the piston rings to stick. We have fixed multiple zz engines by simply replacing the valve with the updated part from toyota, then soaking the cylinders with sea foam and atf over night. Once the rings are freed up it stops consuming oil

The 2ZZ also featured in the Toyota Corolla and Matrix XRS as well as the Pontiac Vibe GT. It ran up to 8,200 RPM in those applications as well.

S series engines go up to 2.2L (5s-fe) Their racing pedigree also stems from their multiple WRC wins. These things were legendary in wrc until toyota got banned.

@@redbonetony22Fun fact, the 5SFE in the 90s Camry has balance shafts. However the one in the Celica is identical but doesnt have balance shafts. Found tbis out when i swapped my Celicas's 5S with a junkyard camry 5S and the oil pans were incompatible.

all the early 2000s engines burn oil due to stuck piston rings, a piston soak with engine flush of b-12 over 24 hours will fix this 90% of the time. Look up this in Audi engines for example. This is coming from a 2zz owner

I have the Dynamic Force engine in my C-HR. It has been my daily for the last 5 years and I have had zero issues. It has great fuel economy and predictable, linear power. I bought a Toyota TRD Air Intake Kit to squeeze more power out of the engine and with the bump in HP it feels like how this is how it should have come from the factory. I have had zero issues with the engine and it actually drives better now than when I bought it new.

As someone with a 2az motor, I love that thing because it's an absolute tank. I have redlined it countless times and driven it so hard even with 270k miles on it. That being said it absolutely burns an unholy amount of oil, putting me down a quart a week. Sometimes even a little more.

The 18R and 2T-G has probably one of my favourite valve cover designs ever put on an internal combustion engine. Another thing to add, the 2ZR-FE was featured in the Auris TRD Edition. Sounds pretty good with the proper exhaust setup.

why is the AR B tier? Its a very reliable engine that is fully aluminum with very good head flow and wide angle VVT gears, its a known to make Honda K power by swapping the cams from the hybrid version and moving them a tooth for performance. Its very comparable to the A and S for its time. The AR is the 4 cylinder equivalent of the GR V6.

I was about to comment almost exactly this! The 2AR-FE, with the FXE cams can make really healthy power numbers, and thanks to the conservative compression ratio, they can make a ton of reliable power when a turbo is added. They are extremely stout, and as long as the oil is changed every five thousand miles, they will run nearly forever. It's not uncommon to see these with over 300k miles still running reliably. I think the only thing that holds this motor platform back was the lack of a turbo model on offer aside from the bizarre and fairly uncommon 8AR motor, which was scaled down to 1.8L and shares more in common with the SZ series than the AR.

AR is not good. It's entire valve train and internals are made of paper, the engine can't rev for crap, it's only big. The entire AR swap idea is a ploy by a company (Frakenstien Motorworks) trying to sell products. They are trash engines which is why 20 years ago no one tuned them when they were in the Tc. They didn't suddenly get better, someone wanted to sell gullable people a "cheaper kswap" by trying to be first to market with conversion parts.

the 3sge powered the altezza too (the JDM version of the lexus IS) in the rs200 trim, and i honestly think its so cool how different it is from the rest of the world, instead of 2-3 liter inline 6's, theres a 2 liter inline 4 that revs to 8k and gets 210 hp NA, just 10 less than the 2jz version. It's one of the coolest JDM exclusive car for me.

2ZZ is just a crazy engine for how conservative Toyota are, but when Yamaha gets involved, you KNOW you are getting something exceptional. I think at least the 2ZZ variant belongs in S-tier because of how extreme that redline is, fixes the oil burning of 1ZZ, and of course Lotus making it look like a jet thruster. I think I still like my 7M-GE more, but I've never remotely had a car with a motor as wild and driver involved as the 2ZZ.

My friend has a 2ZZ Celica and it's a brilliant engine when paired with the 6 speed manual. Very similar character to VTEC Civics with a high redline and aggressive valve lift changeover. The car itself also handles beautifully with just better tyres, coilovers and a thicker rear sway bar.

The Dynamic Force is a great engine! Love it in my Camry, it’s got just about as much shove as my BMW N52 did while being so much more efficient.. makes a pretty decent noise for a 4 cylinder too! Plus being able to throw in 87 octane is nice. Definitely A tier engine, but if i had to change one thing id put the ZR engine in at least B tier, its still an improvement upon the ZZ

The Dynamic Force is a great engine. Warms up fast, has lots of power, and gets great fuel economy. Had a 2ZR before it and there is no comparison. My '22 Corolla 6MT has a Borla Catback and a K&N typhoon intake with stock tune. Sounds great. I always thought it was a slow car but after doing a pull alongside a 2008ish BMW 328i Coupe and almost passing it (ran out of road) I am now convinced this engine is much better than I thought. Not surprised it is A-tier on this list.

The 3SZ-VE in my Daihatsu Materia is a great engine. It's a wonderful car to own and drive with an engine that matches it's character perfectly. It is very willing and the vvti makes you feel sporty even though it's not that powerful. The chassis also is inspiring and it's strange stature only makes it more engaging! What a great car. It would ve great to see the nissan engines done as well. SR, CG, MA etc

I got 227k on the 2AZFE on an 07 RAV4. Did start burn oil at around 65k and got really bad close to 200k. I did a pistons soak with Berryman B12, and it has significantly reduced oil burning.

As the happy owner of a 3ZZ-FE with 206 000km running E85 since it's 185 000km note that ZZ engine piston rings problems were corrected from 2004 to 2005 depending on the model. So latest ones are not impacted and are very reliable. Like every engine just remember to do basic maintenance like filter and oil every 10 000km maximum

I believe the Y series (4Y) became one of the most prolific forklift engines, not mentioned in the applications of the Y series in the video. Dirt simple and intended to last forever, the 4Y block should outlast the attachments; mine needs a new distributer.

In Australia our 7th gen celicas only ever came with 2zz. Regularly see them beating 300000km with no real issues. I personally have never had an issue with my engine, although the heater core design will lead to overheating upon failure, since the coolant flow isn't controlled by valve.

2RZ and 3RZ have some very nice modifiablity, while its more popular in Australia, its becoming more and more popular in north america. With simply a turbo, you can make 300hp+ on either of these engines. The 2RZ is known to handle boost better, likely because of the smaller stroke. But on the contrary, the 3rz has a forged crank and more displacement. Majority parts between these two motors are interchangeable. As far as I know, there is no major issues known with these. Over all I think the RZ would be an A tier at least.

The 2zz is like the 7m of toyota 4s. People like to complain about them online because they don't know how to drive one. Its not a bullet proof engine. You need to wait 5 minutes for the car to warm up before driving and longer before engaging lift. People will money shift them then complain that it breaks the engine. I think the reason there is a lot more hate towards them has to do with the nature of the engine. It's extremely tempting to ride out gears to 8k. That makes people more likely to miss shift and blow them up. Especially since toyota manual shifters are sloppy and vague. If you were changing up at 4k then money shift, it would have enough range to keep the engine safe.

I had the 2012 toyota yaris with the 1.5 1NZ-FE engine, it was very reliable and never gave me trouble. Now i have the toyota yaris cross (SEA spec) with the 1.5 2NR-VEX hybrid engine which gives me 60 mpg

It was only the ealier years. They fixed that and the VVT rattle issue later. The earlier ones gave the engine a less than spectacular reputation.

Ok the RZ series was definately underrated in this video. They are the best light commercial vehicle engine Toyota made. In Australia they fetch a premium as they are very common to be built for performance applications, responding excellently to forced induction making heaps of power and torque. The 3rz is one of if not the best engine they ever put into a Hilux.

The 1ZZ corolla that I have is still the car that I have driven. I bought it from facebook marketplace 2 years ago just so I have a relatively cheap car that I can cheaply maintain. It pulls really hard considering that it is automatic. More fun than my dad's 2017 impreza (cvt).

I will say the 1AZ-FSE has been proven to be incredibly tough and quite quick, my 06 Caldina has the engine and it screams to high rpm, really gets up and goes and keeps up with alot of cars, helps that I have a ganador exhaust and filter, it's proven to be really tough and handles being driven hard with 8000km oil changes

Here is some trivia for the toyota K and T series. These engine can also be found in Philippine stainless jeep replicas. The K series for more efficient daily use and the T series for old school racing application

Only early 3zz have this problem. My car is a Corolla equipped with 3ZZ it has been running E85 for now 21 000km (with a Map) and it has 207 000km in total. And it's running like a charm

2ZZ owner here with 189k miles. I drive it to redline almost once every day it gets driven & the car will take it with no problems. No huge oil burning/consumption, only about half a quart per 3000 miles or between oil changes, which ain't too bad!

Another thing to note about the ZZ family, they have a tendency to make their oil pickup gear explode in cases of excessive rpm.

Eh, my brother has a stock 2RZ in his '86 pick-up putting down 350 to the rear tire with the help of e85 and 14lbs of boost. He's had more issues with finding a transmission or rear end to hold it than the engine itself. It actually made over 150 to the rear tire bone stock, but running on a Haltech Elite. The 22R really can't hold a candle to that engine in pretty much any way, they really aren't as "bullet proof" as been let on.

E series are beasts. Got a few with over 250K miles and the 4E-FTE can be pushed to 300 horsepower no biggie Def A tier at minimum The regular 4E-FE is pretty close to the 4A.

yeah, my favorite two engine families are at the top, i knew at the beginning of the video "s" stood for s block but a blocks are just as good, but smaller. i would have added r blocks to the top or s tier but i understand. i drove a 3s-fe for 14 years. i miss that old camry.

The RZ should be A tier if the ZZ and R is A tier. It is as reliable as the R series and makes more power. The only issue is burnt valve, preventable if you adjust the valves, and even if you don't it takes a long time to occur. People with the R series upgrade to the 3rz, which is enough said. And if the RZ is A tier, the TR is S tier. The TR is the RZ perfected, the valves are self adjusting. It has no common problems, and it most mechanics don't have experience replacing them. And both engines are cast iron, so they can be bored out for a 2nd life.

I think the placement of the ZZ engines make sense, i own a 7th gen Celica GT-S which means i have the 2ZZ-GE, i have had no problems with it. on the other hand one of my friend has 7th gen GT that has the 1ZZ its pretty much a daily occurrence of something leaking oil or blowing up with his engine.

I think the AZ series should be in the d tier fs, if it's never overheated, oil changed regularly, and it's pre 07 it's one of the most simplistic soild and cheap engines out there.

my Ipusm has a 2AZ-FE engine in it, and apart from a little bit of oil consumption, it runs well. I've put over 5000 km since I owned it, and I'm more aware about the oil consumption and the overheating weakness after research, thinking about the types of engines that could fit in case it breaks on me, but that's expensive, and I might not even keep the car if the engine blows. Yes, I did have one situation where the oil got too low and the light began to flicker on and off, and it got noisy. it's fine now, but one concern I have(since I got it) is at low throttle and rpm when cold it sounds like a diesel engine, higher than 2000 rpm during and it goes away, replaced with all the whines my engine makes normally. it's had a crappy battery replaced with a new one because it kept dying after a little bit of load on the battery, and my alternator made a lot of brief whining after not being stressed out.

Those E series engines for a cheap run arround shitbox are amazing and so cheap and easy to repair, they can run 40% low on oil and be fine

@@javman6022 Yup, I used to have a 2010 Matrix and used to track and abuse it to the point it of the brinks of it blowing up🤣 and all it asked for return was basic maintenance and tune ups (I still have it btw)
