When I was trying to carve for the warm-up, every time I would turn to move back toward the wake, all the tension in the rope was just gone. I don't know why this happens, and I cant lean into the carve without rope tension to pull against. Could it be that I was carving too wide?

The same issue! But I have some guess. When you make leverage turn, you increase the speed and when you turn toward the wake your speed is still to hight and the tension is going away. But if you make sharper turn, you will decrease the speed and the tension mostly remains. Of course it won't go as smooth as we see on the video, but after some practice it will.

What speed should rider do carves at?

Any speed between 18 and 22 mph is recommended as long as the rider is comfortable in that range. Slower than 18 and the board could get bogged down and feel slow through the water.
