There's another advantage of the W3690 (and all other LGA1366 CPUs with unlocked multipliers) that I learned about after making this video. If you have a board with a locked BIOS, such as the one in the HP Z400 workstation, you can use Intel XTU to do some basic turbo overclocking from within Windows. It's not nearly as flexible or effective as proper tuning in the BIOS, but it might give you a reason to go with this or the W3680 over other options.
@ahmeda.elmoniem78577 жыл бұрын
can you please show me the best settings in XTU to overclock w3690 safely ?
@hblankpc7 жыл бұрын
imgur.com/a/vQewo This is a good place to start, that'll give you 4GHz on all cores under load. I haven't spent a lot of time with XTU but on my system I could go up to 31x (4.13GHz) on all cores and still complete a Cinebench test. 32x on all cores crashed CB though. I tried adjusting the 1 core multiplier but it didn't seem to actually do anything, so I'd keep your multipliers the same across the board.
@ahmeda.elmoniem78577 жыл бұрын
u r right i did go up to 32x for all cores and it crashed with watchdog bluescreen erorr and i think 31x for all cores like the image will be the end of my OC but it is not bad at all actually it is great we r talking about 3.9 ghz !! the AC ORIGNIS recommended ghz is only 3.4 ghz !!

I match your cinebench score with a x5650 and an AIO on an asus rampage iii gene at 4.4 ghz. I honestly think with the right motherboard and cooling the x5650 is the ultimate xeon as it achieves stable 4.4 ghz overclocks at 29 dollars on ebay, w3690s are still 150 dollars.
@hblankpc7 жыл бұрын
There's a big difference between "ultimate" and "smartest buy". You've capped out your all-core multiplier already so unless you juice your BCLK a little more or enable turbo, you've squeezed all you can out of it. That right there highlights why an unlocked multiplier is nice; even if you can't realistically raise it past what a locked CPU can achieve, you still have the freedom to try, and at the very least you can do some really basic overclocking with XTU on boards with a locked BIOS. At the moment the X5660 is priced basically identically to the X5650, so the price argument doesn't hold up either. (eBay didn't want to show the trending prices so I can't confirm if that's normally the case) I have no idea where you're getting $150 for the W3690, the trending price is $110. Still not a good deal, but that's not the point.

The Obseletist, what cooler do you recommend for overclocking at 4 gHz or more? I have a coolmaster g100m, and it does a good job at around 68 degrees, but during certain points in a game, the temp may spike to the 80's. Liquid cooler?
@hblankpc5 жыл бұрын
I don't think you really need liquid cooling tbh, 4GHz in particular isn't very hard to cool even with the 212 Evo. I almost bought a Scythe Mugen 5 until I realized I needed an even shorter cooler for best compatibility with my case, so assuming your case isn't crap I'd get that.
@WebbTech15 жыл бұрын
@@hblankpc , yeah I had a "crap case". My whole rig was donated to me by my friend/co-worker, after I told him I was getting back into PC gaming, after a years and years. The rig was (somewhat is, though I'll explain the changes) a basic Cooler Master case, Windows 7 professional, 2 640GB HHD's (in Raid configuration), i7920, 8 GB ddr3 ram, a Gtx 970 Twin Frozer graphics card, stock cooler, 1 exhaust fan, but it did come with a Cosair 750M power supply. NOW: 16gb ddr3 ripjaws 1600mhz ram (XMP profile says it can be 1600 but in bios I have it at 1444hmz, 1600 is not stable, but that may require some configuration), EVGA Geforce GTX 1060 6GB SC graphics card (I have this overclocked at 1835mHz, really outstanding results!), the w3690 (of course!), the Cooler Master RGB G100m cooler which is on full speed (2500rpms), MSI 24 inch 144mHz curved monitor..and now I have the Silverstone Primera RGB case with 4 140mm fans, and with 2 140 mm be quiet! fans on the top inside of the case..all of which will be transferred over to this new case. I prefer right now air over liquid cooling. Even playing games now with my current upgraded configuration, I get excellent performance and temps...will be even better when transferred to the new case. Who knows though...I am happy with my configuration and it's performance. I already know about all of ideas that what I have may be deemed "outdated" when it comes to gaming. Everything though is super-fast, and I enjoy it. I may at some point swap the whole mother-board/cpu/ram configuration for an AMD/Ryzen build (ironically, I just saw on ebay that the DX58so, lga 1366 socket was going for as much as $150! There's something about this kind of platform for budget gamers/enthusiasts like myself!!) but for now, I am cool! And again, thank you for this video about the w3690, which sold me on this build! PEACE!

X5690 user here. I've got mine recently overclocked from running it stock for almost a decade to 4.6GHz and i noticed that my CPU needs a bit lower voltage. VDroop LVL2 and 1.37V. At 1.36 it is stable in Ycruncher for a while but when the benchmark test switch to another instruction set i've got bluescreen so i set it at 1.37 and it is rock solid. 12 threaded beast. But my second PC is on 1155 Z77 mobo paired with 32GB ram and i7 2600K. That cpu is also hugely overclocked from max turbo 3.8 to 4.8GHz but i don't know exactly if i did that or it already was like that but after like 6-7 months i have to increase a voltage by clicking only once PLUS key on a keyboard and now i'm at 1.43V... i think the next cpu will be delided 3770K because it supports faster ram and has a better bandwidth. And 3770K at 4.5GHz is a bit better and faster and more importantly it runs cooler in terms of performance as 2600K. I don't have enough money to buy a new PC but i really don't need to.. i like old stuff. It is pretty much like a hobby, overclocking, tweaking everything in a bios to absolute peak performance. As For both PC i have watter cooling installed, the X5690 never reach over 67c and i found on Alliexpress better passive heatsink for north bridge ICH and VRAM for my motherboard. With water cooling so the power delivery for the cpu and crucial components stays nice and chilly.

Great vid. Hope you can answer these questions for me! Forums seem to be mixed on this but isn't the 48gb on x58 usability pointless? Does the memory controller even utilize it past 24gb? (I know you can it to register its there but does the x58's memory controller use it past 24gb? Secondly with the DDR3 pushed past 1600... Isn't it only capable of utilizing 1366 (Speaking of the W3690 ) Thanks, I am curious to upgrade more stuff on my x58 sli classified !
@mikem95366 жыл бұрын
Depends on the ram, x58 doesn't like dual sided ram if you're using more than 3 sticks, so it's easy to hit 24GB's using 3 sticks but if you want 48 GB's you'll need single sided ram.

@@mikem9536 using gskill ripjaws ddr3 2rx8 (dual ranked) 1600mhz 10.10.10.30 xmp 6x8gb dimms working just fine on x58 boards tested on p6t-deluxe-v2 and on p6x58d-premium. Also x58 xeons and i7s support ecc but only low density ram. tested and can confirm on p6t-se mobo i7 920 running with 2rx8 ecc dimms. It will also work with ecc reg dimms marked with r e.g. (2rx8 pc3-10600r). can also confirm that high density ddr3 ecc reg ram will not work on consumer x58 mobo so anything including 4rx8 (quad ranked) in the name e.g. (4rx8 pc3-10600r). I presume that 4rx8 pc3-10600e non registered ecc ram wont work either in standard x58 mobo reason being is that the intel chipset will not communicate with high density memory similar to cheap ddr2 4gb dimms marked as amd only being that they are quad ranked/high density. Just fyi u cannot mix different types of dimms e.g. if i have normal 2rx8 pc3-10600 non ecc ram i cant add 2rx8 pc3-10600e ecc or 2rx8 pc3-10600r registered ecc ram to my system but i can chose to replace non ecc ram with either 2rx8 pc3-10600e or 2rx8 pc3-10600r ram as a upgrade. The speed of the ram used in my example doesnt matter what matters is whether its high density 4r(4 rows) or low density 1r, 2r (1 row or 2 row) 2r ram will not overclock as well but it preforms better than 1r ram which will overclock more as there are less access rows to strain the memory controller. The other important thing is making sure u dont mix different types of ram so keeping non ecc ddr3 L, U ,S (no indication) (2rx8 pc3-10600L, 2rx8 pc3-10600U, 2rx8 pc3-10600S, 2rx8 pc3-10600) separate from ddr3 ecc and ecc low voltage (2rx8 pc3-10600E, 2rx8 pc3L-10600E) and separate ecc registered and ecc reg low voltage (2rx8 pc3-10600R, 2rx8 pc3L-10600R) from normal ecc and standard ram.

Yes it can, GTA V loves cores and this has 6... Best way to get a cheap motherboard for these is buying a used Dell T3500 workstation (much better quality then their laptops/consumer products) from newegg and then buy the cpu from ebay... I lucked out got one 6 months ago for just over $200 canadian that had a w3690 already in it.

The W3690 is truly the best LGA1366 Processor. I just built up a system with one on an EVGA X58 Classified motherboard, and paired it up with a RTX 2080 and 16gb of Ram, soon to be 24gb. I have not overclocked the processor or ram yet, however it can run Battlefield 5 with DX12 enabled at 4k ultra settings with ease, and delivers respectable, almost playable framerates with DXR enabled at 4k ultra though it's a little glitchy. Cost of the upgrade from a i7-920 was $86, and totally worth it!
@opoxious15922 жыл бұрын
I seems like thate the W3690 supports a max of 24GB of ram, while the other chips like the i7 990x supports 48GB of ram ( i have installed this ammount of ram). And some say that the Xeon 5675 and 5690 can even support up te 96GB of ram. For now 24GB is plenty for gaming, but it's nice that you can upgrade when nessecary. Some games are no recommended to have 32 GB of ram
@gregorymaine96152 жыл бұрын
@opoxious1592 not totally true.... I had the W3690 running with between 32gb and 40gb of RAM at one point before I retired it. The Intel spec page on that CPU disappeared for a while and now has a new one. I recall the old page listing 48gb as max.
@opoxious15922 жыл бұрын
@@gregorymaine9615 Ok, that's really nice to know. because my decision to choose for the x5690 was based for the fact that it could support a much higher ammount of ram. But it seems that also the W3690 can support much more than the official number of 24gb
@DrQuin8515 жыл бұрын
I built my x58 back in '08 with an i7-920, gigabyte UD4P rev.1, 4 GB 1600 RAM and a raptor 500 GB HDD and it briefly housed an 8800 ultra before I went to a 9800 GT. All powered by a 1Kw BFG PSU. I still run that system with the exception of added SSDs, 24 GB triple channel ram underclocked to 1600 and now a 1070 FE. I just ordered a w3690 off ebay for $57 USD. Got another week till it shows up. I wonder what will give out first, processor won't support some new instruction set that games need or pci-e gen2 bandwidth finally not being enough. Here's to lasting through two more GPU generations before abandoning the x58 platform.
@hblankpc5 жыл бұрын
There have already been some games like Journey that refused in the past to launch without AVX, though all such games have been patched to run without it AFAIK. Most likely scenario IMO is that 9th gen consoles will mark the end of X58's AAA viability

Nice video, I'm definitely subscribing ! And I have a question: I'm getting a new PC (my actual Core 2 Duo is really on its knees with basic usage) What do you think would be the best ? A Xeon W3680 on a Precision T3500 or a Core i7 2600 on a Optiplex 790 MT ? I can get both system for pretty much the same price (160 euro for the Precision, 180 for the Optiplex), I'm not really gaming on it, just indie game I can't find on my Xbox One (I'm gonna put a GT730 in it, not a gaming card at all, tho with the 12GB of RAM and the SSD it's gonna fly) I think the W3680 would be best because of its 6 core, but maybe the i7 would beat it because of its newer architecture, what do you think I should get ? Thanks, and nice video ;)
@hblankpc6 жыл бұрын
The newer architecture of the i7 isn't nearly enough to beat out the 2 extra cores on the W3690, so go for the latter unless you care a lot about power consumption. The E5 makes things interesting though, it's slightly faster than the i7 and on the same architecture (so it still loses to the W3690) but it has an upgrade path to an even newer CPU with anywhere from 4 to 8 cores should you choose that in the future. TL;DR: best performance now: W3690 best power consumption: i7-2600 good performance now, best performance later: E5 1620
@antares23236 жыл бұрын
To be honest I don't care about power consumption XD Yeah I saw that ! For 180 EUR, I can get a ThinkStation S30 with a E5 1620 v1 with 8GB of RAM and a Quadro (don't know the model tho), and that computer supports up to 12 core, so yeah it's pretty interesting :D Thanks for your quick reply ;)

Multipliers aren't locked downwards though, you just can't go up on a locked chip. Higher base clock + lower multiplier from my experience generally outperforms having the higher clocks on just the CPU. For example an i7 875k (unlocked of course) set to a 29x multiplier will get you up around 3.86GHz clock speed or you can leave the multiplier at 22x (the default stock upper limit for the 870/875k/x3470) and raise the bclk to 175MHz to get the same 3.86GHz clock speed, but instead of 1596MHz ram you get 2106MHz ram (if your ram can handle it otherwise you can just change the ram multiplier to get it closer to or in spec) and faster clocks on pretty much everything else as well so the performance isn't even really close.. 5-15% higher performance from using the bclk instead of taking advantage of the multiplier being able to go up. I've never personally found having an unlocked multiplier to be any advantage really since in the early days fsb was essentially the only thing you could manipulate to overclock a CPU so when black editions and X/K skus started appearing it was just meh to me as I still overclock on fsb/bclk more often than not even on unlocked chips.

Hi The Obsoletist. Enjoyed watching this video and i've got a question im hoping you can answer for me. I recently got a w3565 for $20 which should be here any day. I bought a Dell T3500 with a w3505 dual core @ 2.53ghz and upgraded to a free e5506 quad @ 2.1ghz. Paired with the gtx 750ti i can still do some pretty great gaming on the 5506 and i know it will be insanely better with the 3565. What im wondering is when im ready to purchase the final cpu for this system am i better with this w3690 or would i be better of with an x5687 quad @3.6ghz for gaming?
@hblankpc6 жыл бұрын
The W3690 is better for modern games that scale well with higher core counts, while the X5687 is only a tiny bit faster in games that don't (since it's 133MHz faster). Personally, I'd recommend grabbing a W3680 and using XTU (instructions in reply to pinned comment) to overclock it, since you won't be able to overclock with an X series Xeon.

Until now, so I build a PC with an MSI X58 PRO-E, X5680 / W3680, Prolimatech Genesis, 24GB RAM, EVGA GTX 1070, MX500 SSD, all packed in a Lancool PC-K58 case. The X5680 works fine under 1,45V and is set to 3,8Ghz - 85° at benchmarks. Later I got a W3680 and want it to get 4,0Ghz but this time I would use a Kryosheet graphenpad. So far I am happy with that system.

Is it worth to go for X5670 on X58 against an FX 6300 on 990 Chipset? What's the advantage?
@hblankpc6 жыл бұрын
An X5670 will offer way better performance than a 6300 (twice as fast when all cores/threads are used), but switching will mean you lose AVX instructions. Certain applications like H.265 encoding suffer greatly without it, and future games will probably require it. Assassin's Creed Odyssey for example required AVX at launch but that requirement got patched out, but Ubi might not bother doing that in the future. If you don't already have a board, don't bother going X58. Ryzen makes waaaay more sense for a new build.
@ubxoldier6 жыл бұрын

I am currently using an FX 6300 and Crosshair 5 Formula, hence wanted to know if it is a good idea to replace it with the Xeon+X58 and gain some extra performance.
