There's a bassist who must receive more credit. The disco era would be nothing without this man!
I'm talking about none other than...Maurice Gibb of The Bee Gees.

My top 5 no particular order Jive Talking/Night Fever/Staying Alive/You shoulda be dancing(yeah!)/Grease.I remember we couldn't believe our ears back then.Such perfection. Such a lush Top notch production at the time!Another levelStill are Unbeatable! To me Bee Gees and Abba made the most well crafted stuff of the '70s in maistream music scene ..and also in production terms i would also add the likes of Giorgio Moroder and Frank Farian.

Maurice wasn’t a disco bassist. He was a musician who helped shape Disco. He was an inventor and a songwriter. Bee Gees weren’t a disco band either. They just made music during disco. They made music LONG before and LONG after.

Very talented lad. If you're under the age of 50, it's hard to imagine the backlash this band got from the rock crowd of the late 70s/early 80s. They probably had more album burnings than The Beatles. Got to the point they couldn't even record anymore, instead relegated to songwriters on others' hits. Time smooths the hard edges, and hopefully people appreciate how talented this band really was.

I never burned a BeeGees album but gladly would have given the opportunity. I dislike their high pitched voices. It was impossible to avoid hearing their songs. I grew up with Bee Gees music from their days emerging in the 60's as an incredible 3 piece harmony to their stellar work after the breakup of the band, and albums like Main Course and Children of the World and then of course, Saturday Night Fever. Subsequently, we had Spirits Having Flown, but a p-ssed off DJ in Chicago led a US wide ban on everything disco and everyone forgot about anything the Bee Gees did outside of Saturday Night Fever. Though they had continued to write hits for Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers (Islands in the Stream) and Celine Dione (Immortality), their own reputation as a group took over a decade to come back. Watching Barry Gibb taught me how to use open tuning and Maurice taught me that a grooving bass line was more important than learning Roundabout note-for-note. An incredible band, and so sad the only one left is Barry after losing Andy, Maurice, and Robbin (in that order). Count me as having always been an unapologetic fan of the The Bee Gees.

Listening to those bass parts I think it comes across that even if he was a bass player he came up with his lines like a songwriter

He is just awesome. I always thought that. For one stage of their career, he was their band! Plus he was a funny guy. He didn't seem to ever take himself seriously. He seemed very genuine. And he was a killer bassist. And that discipline you speak of. To completely NOT play anything. That is genius. It adds a whole other swing to the rhythm. This stop / start tug that makes everything ebb and flow that's constant. Genius. If you were dancing The Bump with someone, he is hitting it on every bump. Which truly, when dancing, is when you're using your hips to their max. Accenting that one beat, in a 4 beat pattern. It's just a smart move.

Great video about a great bass player. You have highlighted beautifully how his rhythmic spacing made his music so funky. I would be very much interested in learning about how his bass lines were harmonically tied in with the rest of the music. Maybe in a future video?

Thank you for that Maurice Gibb appreciation video, he’s my main bass influence and the reason I play bass. Now that you’ve talked about him as a fundamental disco bass player, you should show his 60s bass era and some 80s bass era that he recorded with his brothers. I’m sure you’ll get a big surprise and you’ll love it more. I’ll be waiting that video, new subscriber🔥

Morris : Was the Multi Instrumentalist, the Orquestra man , he was the member of a Sinphonic Orquestra in England he could read music and play it. Thank you for recognizing who Morris was, He was the Music Man , he and his brothers were incredible singers and he was the quiet genius and humble Orquesta man, hidden in his humbleness. That was a very humble Genius .

Yes, Maurice is a great example of playing a constructed part that provides separate movement to the melody. And it worked perfectly.

Hi Andrew! Maurice was an exceptional musician, an amazing singer and an awesome arranger. The Bee Gees wouldn't have been The Bee Gees without him. Also, I just wanted to point out that The Bee Gees have sold over 220 million records and counting. Cheers!

Bee Gees was incredibly adaptable. I was thirteen when "you win again" was released and became a fan immediately. Maurices' sudden death at only 53 was a tragedy😢
