Insulating on the outside of existing brick would give you amazing thermal mass coupling with the interior conditioned space, and give benefits much greater than the same insulation level over wood framing. This would be transformational for older masonry buildings. Hopefully you also strengthen them to resist earthquakes, as needed based on local seismic activity.

Here in Portugal, most buildings are getting EIFS but we call it ETICS instead (External Thermal Insulation Composite System). There is one major difference: we do not create the drainage air gap between the EPS and the masonary wall, so after a couple of years the EPS starts to get black and green because of mold and bacteria...

I worked for a stucco and plaster company from the late 1990s to 2015. We went through the redesign of EIFS. There were a number of lawsuits against the manufacturers. About 90 to 95% of the cases were dismissed. The reasons given for the dismisals ranged from improper structure design, lack of appropriate waterproofing plans, failure to install proper flashing, improper window and door installs and poor training and quality control. When installed properly and maintained, EIFS like any other building material will last for years. When I started EIFS was approximately 15% of the commercial cladding market. In 2015 it was closer to 25% of the market.

At 4:50 you have a photo of a product you called "rigid rockwool". If the drainage channels are not installed vertically, how is water supposed to drain down? Your photo shows the channels running horizontally. At 5:19 you have a photo of the product installed correctly.

How much heat transfers through the fasteners? Is something like z channel or Larsen truss better if you are going for a perfect wall?

I have an A-Frame that was built inside-out in 1970, i..e they put up beams then put up tongue-and-groove cedar over the beams, then built the roof on top of the cedar... with no insulation. I'm wondering how much of the existing roof I need to tear off to insulate it. I suspect I could just tear off the shingles and install EIFS, but I also have a problem with critters getting into the spaces in the roof, so I need to either fill the spaces or seal all holes into the spaces.

Do you or not need firing strips when using rock wool... on plywood that's been paintings and sealed?

can this be installed over an existing stucco surface? (using the same fluid applied water barrier as was described for masonry buildings)

I was wondering if I could ask for a video. To address using a humidifier during winter. when is it ok, when isn't it. across different building assemblies and air tightness. I hate when the air inside gets down to near single digit humidity in the winter. But I'm worried that a humidifier might just be pumping water into my attic or walls in my old leaky house. Someday I want to custom build a very airtight and building science maximized house to near passive house standards on my property. And finally achieve year-round perfect temperature humidity and air quality, and wonder how I would safely maintain humidity in that sort of scenario?

I want to insulate my 115 year old home in Ontario (cold climate). However, I don’t have access to the exterior walls… what do I do? Rigid foam and roxwool? Or is rigid foam just for concrete. Thanks
@markstipulkoski1389Ай бұрын
I've seen E.I.F.S. used directly on the foam of ICF walls. Assuming the joints are sealed as you showed for the rigid foam board, do you see any problems? Certainly there would be no thermal bleed though of the insulation fasteners since with ICF, none are present.
@ASIRIDesignsАй бұрын
Great question, short answer is that we wouldn't recommend it, as the system lacks a water control layer and a drainage layer. Taping the joints would certainly help, but I would prefer to see a fully adhered or liquid applied membrane installed over the ICFs, then something like Dorken's delta dry and lath, or an entangled mesh product.

Thank you for this episode. Can I use EIFS on a brick retrofit but instead of stucco a cladding material?
@floridafisherman7885Ай бұрын
Yeah you can, you need some who is good with using it though, my dad and grandpa used eifs to make stucco brick and other designs, but you need some experience with it to use it that way

Does the air gap between the insulation and water barrier negate some of the thermal benefit of the insulation? Is there a way to quantify the impact?
@tombuilder5361Ай бұрын
EIFS is a good system, but I don't believe you stressed the importance of proper drainage flashing. In another video, would you please get into the flashing details? Specifically, how the drainage gap allows water to drain at the bottom & air movement at the top & bottom of wall systems as well as at doors & windows. If the installer can master those details & you will have a siding that performs well & lasts.

Sounds good overall at first, yet your last few sentences bring up an issue of fiberglass mess degradation with no long term track record info. to help us understand if this system may be a "NO GO" system!
@ASIRIDesignsАй бұрын
@@slaveofjesus3878 It's definitely the weakest link, even if you do everything correctly. You want to make sure that the mesh specified has a decent plastic coating over the fiberglass to slow down deterioration. The products are getting better but eventually the plastic coating wears away to reveal the fiberglass.
