Some argues that the nineties is the greatest period in dancehall however I was there and the eighties is the best period in dancehall history for me .Echo minott's biggest hit ... No Lazy Body was done in the eighties as with most if not all authentic dancehall artiste their most successful songs were done in the eighties .

I lived the 80s and 90s. The reason why the 90s is hailed as the dancehall decade, is because by that time, most of the other music genres in Jamaica were kind of dying out. Most people forget that there were a lot of other genres of music in Jamaica during the 80s including, jazz, country and western, Calypso, soca, roots rock reggae, international reggae, dub reggae, lovers rock reggae, gospel and so much more. With so much choices of music to choose from, a lot of people were not in favored for dancehall. However, by the 90s, a shift has occurred, the sound system has become a dominant force in the island. Shabba Ranks won Grammy for Dancehall and suddenly, people who would rather listening to jazz or soul, is now interested in the ghetto, dirty music. Irie FM was also a driving force that brought dancehall music to the ears of the people, not to mention Japan splash that Tiger, Dennis Brown and more sold out! By the 90s, dancehall could not be contained any longer, and Jamaica have no choice but to give in to the vibe. With studios like Penthouse, Shocking vibz, Madhouse, Jammies and others, and top engineers like Dave Kelly, pumping out the hottest riddims, no doubt, the 90s was the sweetest times to be enjoying dancehall music for sure!

@@blackbway Ok fine .You said a lot about the 90s but little about the eighties .You did not mention Sly and Robby .All dancshall singers got number one songs in the eighties .Namely Pinchers ,Frankie Paul ,Courtney Melody ,Same Echo Minott ,Barrington Levy ,Cocoa Tea ,Sugar Minott ,Tenor Saw ,Pliers and on the reggea side we had Dennis Brown ,Gregory Isaacs ,I think Garnet Silk would be a 90s singer .Great Sound Systems were more dominant in the eighties .Shabba's rise and peak was in the eighties .Actually Authentic Dancehall ran from like 1979 to 1999 peaking in 1989 .I still did not name the greatest line up of Dancehall Djs of the eighties along with the magnificient contribution of the great Barrington Seymore Gordon .
