RCA Victor introduced the 45 RPM record (which Mario Lanza is holding) in March and April of 1949. They remained very popular for many years to come. The phonograph in the picture is one of the 45 RPM only players which could be plugged into many radios of the period allowing one to utilize the radios audio system to play the record. They sound magnificent!

There's always some things that jump out although I need to keep listening. "I Know, I Know, I Know" - with what pure light tones Mario croons the title line! The man was a musical sponge. The "Deep in My Heart" is delightful. For a big-voiced singer he was a very tactful partner in a duet. The two songs from "Serenade" are the big finds, I much prefer these takes to the more bombastic versions used in the movie. It's nice to hear a longer version of the "Bella Figlia" quartet (though it still ends abruptly) as the snippets previously available were tantalizing. "Beloved" had me shedding a tear, a first take, unbelievable. I appreciate that the songs from "The Vagabond King" are improved in sound, though not as good as I might wish. I like Mario's voice to have the immediacy of standing right next to him, feeling his breath on my cheek. I wouldn't even mind if it was garlic-flavoured, Mario!

What beautiful words, Verna! Even as a man, I'd give anything to hear Mario's voice live and wouldn't mind garlic breath either!

Excellent. As I think we have discussed before Vince I think some of Mario's film recordings are far superior to his RCA or Coca-Cola output and these extended pieces offer a tantalizing glimpse of what longer operatic performances would have held out as many are from the lesser known tenor solo lollipops. Even the brief interlude here of Una Furtiva Lagime is a stunning example. Mario's RCA recoding of this is I think diabolical, too fast, loud and tasteless, the Midnight Kiss version is the absolute antithesis. My Destiny sounds wonderful, and I have no idea why they had this ridiculous idea of adding echo on everything in Serenade, Aghhh. Keep up the good work and congrats to all involved.
@tenderlyone2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, at the time reverberation was the new thing to use and recordings. And, as you know, people have always believed that using the latest is the best. As you can tell, Mario Lanza would’ve been better served by avoiding all those artifices that hide a lot of his voice quality, which, in my opinion, is one of the best in the 20th century produced.

Oh my goodness......amazing........this is unbelievable....Thanks, as always, Vince....My Destiny....Jeez....outstanding! No wonder Mario thought it'd be the next "Be My Love" BTW, how many of these are left in the "vault" as it were??
@DiPlacido712 жыл бұрын
Aw! Thank you Ron!
@derekmcgovern2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron: It's hard to know what's left in the vault, to be honest. If you'd asked me a year ago, I would never have dreamt that we'd soon be listening to the complete 1948 "Una Furtiva Lagrima" from That Midnight Kiss or an outtake of "My Destiny" that actually surpasses the film version. This gives me hope that one day we'll finally get to hear the "Un di' all'azzurro spazio" that Mario recorded for The Great Caruso, just to name one tantalising example of what is possibly still in the vault. By the way, one of the exciting finds on this CD is a much better take of the recitative on Addio alla Madre (recorded for Because You're Mine) than the take we hear on the 1998 Rhino CD "Mario Lanza At MGM." (The recitative was cut from the film.) There's also Mario's unedited first take of "Beloved" (complete with throat clearing!) from his 1953 remake session. The version that was released included a retake of four bars of his singing, so it's great to have the unspliced take at long last. And I'm particularly excited about two of the raw acetates from the July 1959 Vagabond King session: "Love Me Tonight" and "Nocturne." Both sound so much better than on the commercial LP and CD. This is the "naked" Mario, as Vince puts it, and he's in great form---just three months away from the end. There's more information about this CD here: www.mariolanzatenor.com/news/new-cd-from-sepia-records-the-undiscovered-mario-lanza-rare-recordings-and-hidden-gems Cheers, Derek

@ronaldo1901722 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's just me, but I'm still convinced that this "Lord's Prayer" is sung, particularly the second part, "live" on film? Lanza's lip-synching is flawless and his facial expressions, his mouth movement etc. seem to show that he's actually singing this. I know his movies were lip-synched but there are several examples in his films where he actually sung. Anyone else?

It was in his MGM contract that six months of every year he would be free to follow his operatic career, but after that first year, his astonishing success in films - which no one anticipated - found him so bound up in the MGM publicity maw, that he never had time for opera again.
