Imo; The reason why mercenaries failed it's mostly cause people were expecting a slay the spire type game but got a boring grind-fest gacha game instead. And like chat said, once you got a new merc you had to train and farm coins to make him playable so getting new mercs wasn't exciting it was just more work for you to do...

For Mercenaries it didn't help that there were tons of issues that needed to be fixed that were ignored, but any tricks or strats found to make it less grindy or more playable were almost instantly fixed overnight...

I agree that Marvel Snap WAS very fun and that it's cost prohibitive. The battle pass cards (cards that are only accessible from the paid battlepass on release but will be available for everyone else after the season) were always quite strong but I feel like starting from silver surfer, the difference became unreasonable. Also, because I started the game late and there was no acceleration for new players, when they released new cards in the 4th and 5th pools, they also made it much harder for me to get 3rd pool cards, some of which are staples. Even though I still had a positive win rate and was reasonably high ranked, it just stopped being fun getting destroyed on the last turn by opponents with much better cards so I quit.

Regarding the Mercenaries chat in the video: Maybe it's not the biggest reason, but I'd say one reason why Mercenaries fell short was the pricing model. $15 for a *random* portrait (skin) that can only be used in a mode that's barely played? You would have to be out of your mind to think that's at all reasonable. Activision does value their digital goods way too highly across their games (peak greed), but that's definitely the worst offender. Skins in Hearthstone in general should cost no more than $5 *max,* like for the new 3D animated Sylvanas and Arthas skins, yet they've been selling their animated jpegs for $10+ for years. It's kind of disgusting. The other issue semi-relating to pricing is the acquisition of new mercenaries. Either you grind a stupid amount to get some free packs, spend your gold on mercenary packs instead of main Hearthstone card packs (which sounds ludicrous to me), or pay with real money. The fact that you're not guaranteed to get who you want from the sea of characters, if any at all, makes any of the options you choose not feel good. The mode didn't need to have "gacha" elements to it, but knowing it's Activision, they'll go with whatever route is the greediest. Lastly, to throw it in there, regardless of the grind, pricing model and fun factor, they shot themselves in the foot by releasing too many new mercenaries too quickly. There are only so many characters to pull from WoW, so once they implemented all the biggest characters and reached as far as they could for lesser-known extras, there's no one left to add. The only thing they could really do to keep players interested would be to create new modes within Mercenaries, but obviously they're not going to put in that effort when there would be little to no profit to be gained.

I love the insights from trump here. Personally for me, mercenaries wasn't appealing because the gacha aspects really didn't mesh well for me with a style of gameplay that I just wasn't into.

In the spirit of leaving feedback, I'm not a huge fan of leaving out the tag of "Arena" or "March of the Lich King Standard" from the video titles. My preferred content of yours is the arena runs since I found your channel through the single player content stuff, so I'll preferentially watch those videos. If it weren't for the fact that I'd seen another youtuber play an Unending Swarm deck and I thought that its gameplan looked cool, I wouldn't have clicked on this video. It also makes it harder to go back and find specific modes or formats, though not impossible thanks to playlists. Even if they aren't marked formally, e.g. "I Drafted the STRONGEST Arena Card! | Mage Arena | Forged in the Barrens", but just having "Arena" or even something like "Draft" or something to indicate that this is an arena video, it would help. Anyway, now I shall watch this video.
