As a Niners fan, your point about Mullens, Beathard, Jimmy G and Lance not thriving nearly as much as Purdy in Shanahan’s system has is pivotal to proving why the kid is so special.

It's not a fair comparison, a lot of their games were with injury riddled teams (2018 for example). It does kill the argument that any QB can succeed in Kyle's system. It makes it easier for all of them, but they still have to be good. The comparison with Jimmy in the win streak is a different story. Purdy has looked better than Jimmy. The one QB Kyle was winning with while losing with all the others.

Purdy is different. His ten yard split was elite at the combine. He’s quicker than fast in the pocket with both his feet and reads. Honestly, reminds me of Wilson with his escapability in the pocket while keeping your eyes down the field. Dudes elite.

Sometimes you have to give someone a chance until they actually shine. I mean I sat an entire year on my varsity baseball team and my coaches were shocked on why I sucked so much. If you give an athlete just enough time to develop, that’s how you create athletes as s coach by giving your athletes reps. I couldn’t play football at all but I think coaches get stuck in playing the best players possible instead of allowing your team to fail in order to develop your players.

And now that rw is out of the nfc west, 9r's will prolly win the west again next year. 1 game away last season, and only got better in the off season. Then got cmc... and kept him healthy. Dammit. After Jimmy G I felt the 49ers season was done. I expected the stars of the team to carry the team but only up to an extent, because of falling onto a 3rd string rookie QB in Purdy. I expected lots and lots of INTs from him, and honestly, I wouldn't have faulted him for it. He was a 3rd stringer. What he's been doing has totally caught me by surprise. Maybe 1 or 2 good games and the rest bad performances were my expectations, but he's put in nothing but great work.

As a niner fan love to see the team rally behind tha purdy. Way beyond what you would typically see of players when talking about backups when they become the starter. Brock's confidence, poise, attitude, and determination is crucial for a leader beyond just skill alone. Having a true leader is what makes a team come together and play for each other, and elevates the entire franchise. With that said outside of the fins, the cowboys D will be a big test for Brock.

in 2019 my father took me to the Camping World Bowl in Florida he took me there and we saw his Cyclones get humiliated by the Fighting Irish seeing him get drafted last overall was a moot point, he was an NFL Quarterback, and above that one for a franchise as storied as San Francisco imagine my amazement to not only see him end up as the starter but to keep pace at the elite level somehow managing to maximize the capabilities every player on the roster has I hope that his rookie year is one that's told for years on end and I hope that these playoffs create his legend BIG COCK BROCK FTW!

The stat that stands out to me about Purdy is how many games he's played. He played over 40 in High School, then again over 40 in College and now he's playing again in the NFL. The sheer number of games and never really sitting I think is something to consider. Sure the kid is young but damn dude he's played a lot of ball.

Something important you didn't mention was his Iowa State HC Matt Campbell. He was allegedly offered the lions and jets HC jobs but turned them down because he didn't want to leave his guys. He coached Kareem Hunt and Logan Woodside at the University of Toledo, my local college, which is less than an hour from Detroit. Matt Campbell is an offensive genius as much as that's thrown around. He had Purdy starting 4 years which was all I needed to know to know Purdy was very relevant

Seahawks fan here. Despite the long history and obvious division rivalry, I can't find myself for any other team in the playoffs besides these 49ers other than the Bengals. My ideal super bowl is 49ers vs Bengals and the Bengals win. The 49ers this year have been such a treat. All the off season drama with Deebo, confusion with Jimmy vs Tre, saving CMC's career, and having to watch the Rams get rich quick and win a ring, and then both the QBs going down and having to start a rookie that was last pick... they have over come SO much to get to where they are. Yeah they 3 game swept the hawks but we weren't even supposed to be good so it didn't really count ;). Kyle deserves a ring and a half for keeping this team playing the way it has. So as far as NFCW rival respect goes the 2022 49ers has got to be my favorite rival team ever. But if they don't win it all this year than I'll have died from laughter due to the ultimate choke that would be.

Makes me wonder how Mac Jones would be doing if he was selected instead of Lance. All those picks they traded away for him could have been saved. Pretty sure Mac would have been available at 12. Shanahan runs a great system. San Fran has some phenomenal weapons in Kettle, McCaffery, and Samuel. Having the number one ranked Defense also helps. All these have contributed to Purdy's success. In the end though, he is winning. THAT, is all that matters.

Regardless of what happens in game vs. Dallas, Brock has earned the starting gig next year. The 49ers need to ignore the sunk cost fallacy regarding Trey Lance. The picks are gone, let it go. Don't try to force him to play to try and justify the draft capital they gave up for him. Also I'm pretty sure Brock is the 1st rookie making his first start to beat Brady period.

After Purdy took over, I looked at his college stats and there’s not a lot to dislike. His numbers were probably best his first year but he was efficient and successful and the team lacked star wideouts and operated around Breece Hall. Seemed like the 49ers would be a pretty easy progression. He does make me wonder how the NFL really might be too in love with it’s own evaluations. Watch as Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold get recycled over and over again… how many other Brock Purdy’s are maybe out there who never get a chance? In another universe, Tom Brady could very well be one of them.

I've seen enough shaky backup QBs for this team in recent years, Mullens, Beathard, Gabbert, Hoyer. But this guy is DIFFERENT. The decision making and confidence is through the roof. A few plays stood out to me. His first rushing TD, his double pump fake TD, and his TD to Mitchell and almost TD to Aiyuk in the Wild Card game. If it was Jimmy G in those situations, those would be throw out the endzone, throw out the endzone, sack, sack.

You have a great point here. I agree to some point. But what is a bit different than the Montana/Young/Grbac/Bono 80/90s: Actually the replacements of JG were way worse until Purdy came up. So I think Purdy is legit, checkdowns en masse or not.

He was eventually fired after they gave him too much control and his drafting started to become suspect and the wheels started to come off. Definitely had a lot of success under Mike Shanahan. The only reason Kyle didn't come to Denver was a grudge between the football president at the time, Joe Ellis, and Mike Shanahan.

He never gets the blame, but he 100% is the reason. Never cared about winning, used the team as a cash cow, then cashed out. And the fact that he told Elway no to hiring Kyle, is because Ellis hates Mike. It’s ridiculous and stupid. Everything the 9rs are is what we were supposed to be. One thing to consider about BP. He ran the scout team for most of the season.....so he was facing the best defense in football for most of the season. THAT might be the biggest reason he's playing so well.

It really makes you think, how many potential Hall of Fame quarterbacks were out there but never got the opportunity to prove themselves? Guys like Brady and Warner were in the right place and right time with just the right circumstances to get their chance and succeed. What if Bledsoe and Green were never injured? Bledsoe had just signed a 10 year contract. Was Belichick going to move off of him if he didn't absolutely need to? The whole reason the 49ers restructured Garoppolo in the first place was because they were still unsure about Trey Lance and they did not want Purdy to be the backup.

That's exactly right. Too many people are trying to take credit away from Purdy. All it takes is looking at how this team looked the few games before Miami and the games after, all wins, Jimmy was playing his best football as a 49er, and the offense just looks much better since Purdy took over.

Dude, we've seen Brock Bottom (so far). And it's better than what 50%+ of the league puts on the field at quarterback. This kid deserves to be SF's long-term starter, even if they lose in the next few weeks. He's light-years ahead of Lance; he's the Platonic Ideal of what Garoppolo should be. Fuck a sunk-cost, make Lance his back up and roll on.

Is the take that Purdy is on the verge of a cliff a bad one? Yes. That doesn't mean the conversation about how good he is isn't worth considering. Purdy has proven that he is an accurate passer, and a good game manager. Purdy makes good decisions, debatably better that Jimmy G. Now here's the thing: You can't double ANYONE on the 49rs offense, and the 49rs have a top 5 o-line. Yes, we saw Mullens, Lance, and Bothered struggle in the same system. The same system, but not the same roster. This 2022 team is healthier (everywhere but QB) than they've been for years. The 2022 o-line is better. The 2022 roster has Christian McCaffrey. Before McCaffrey got there, you could at least try to scheme out someone. Now with McCaffrey, seriously who do you double? Purdy just doesn't have to mess it up. The only way to beat this offense is to have a defense where there's at least one skill player as good on that side of the ball, as the 4 skill players are on San Fran's offense. Would Purdy be successful on a team where he has to be the hero? We won't know until we see it. Though, and I hate to say this, we have not seen a team more capable of fast forwarding a rookie QB's development since the 2001 Pats.
