Here is my story! After two decades of smoking, I decided to quit last year after experiencing a health scare. Not wanting to worsen my condition, I went along with the Tan Tock Seng's "smoke-free program" (there will be an assigned pharamacist to guide you along). My first 2-3 weeks wasn't easy. My advise is for you to stay away from other smokers during this period. I applied nicotine patches and ate those nicotine gums ~ it does help to reduce cravings but not as much as having a strong mindset. Oh, drinking lots of cold water helps too! It has been over 6 months since my last stick. I save at least $300 a month. I can breathe easily and my heart rate chart has improved. My only issue now is that I gained 15kg since my last stick. I literally grown from size M to XL in 6 months. Thats another story for another day :/

good on jared to share and acknowledging that it is a problem. it's really no joke. I absolutely hate it when people at work (not even young teens, but people in mid 20s-30s) joke about drinking, needing a drink, let's get a drink, etc. and glorifying the idea of getting drunk/wasted. not only is it juvenile, it's really not funny at all, especially when you know how destructive it can be. there is something about mainstream drinking culture that's incredibly toxic that doesn't acknowledge how destructive it is and can be.

It is also expensive. Literally you buy two, three drinks, that is 20-30 bucks down. This is almost the same as a pack of cigarettes. You don't drink, you suddenly see yourself with $300 -$600 more to spend.

I had a psychology lecturer once told us that we are doing this whole campaign to reduce smoking/ vaping wrong. Instead of only educating and marketing these practices as something bad for health per say, they should also be marketing it as something despicable or embarrassing thing to do cause ultimately, humans do not want to look "uncool"...The human psychology thinks that a person who takes risk ( in this case is going against the law and health advices), to be something attractive, empowering or cool. So, if smoking and vaping can be marketed as something "uncool or embarrassing" to do... it'll probably be a more successful. Of course, this is just one other angle to look at, it may not apply as effectively for those who have been long term smokers/vapers as they have other challenges and factors affecting them.

This is true, it is probably the leading reason why cigarette use has been on such a steep decline in recent decades. Unfortunately, the government has generally proven to be quite bad at influencing young people's opinions on what is cool or uncool so they usually stick to what they know best, which is scaring (or educating) people.

I'm sure my addiction story is very common and less serious than others, but it's regarding computers & gaming in general. Probably moreso in the current generation of teens. Been playing games since young, like kindergarten young. My dad bought halo & 3kingdoms on the original xbox as a introduction, then i went on to pokemon and stuff. So when i first got my pc in primary 3, i got stuck on it ever since with newer games like maplestory and audition etc. My parents had to create rules like turning off the router after 8pm, meals at the dining table, etc. My family had a few conflicts with this as a catalyst. My studies were ok though, just a relationship, physical and mental health thing. Also, I was called in during secondary school for computer addiction (probably someone in my family snitched) and had to go through a whole program for addiction (this was back in the early 2010s) and stuff, but it didn't help because I personally did not consider it an addiction back then, but just a way to spend my time. After growing up, I didn't need to adhere to the rules anymore, so things didn't improve. Right now I'm studying computer science in uni, so I have to face the pc for countless of hours everyday. And so everything goes back in a circle - having a justified reason to spend time on the computer :D I didn't "beat my addiction", because I didn't treat it as one in the first place. In retrospect, it was definitely an unhealthy and self-destructive one, even if I was coping decently well with the other things in life. No one can help you if you don't want to help yourself, and the first step of helping yourself is to identify that there is an issue in the first place. Edit: Oh, and also addicted to spending money on (gacha) games, but let's not get into that one... :')

Who doesn't have a past? I had alcohol last time, thankfully not to the point of addiction. But the drinking wasn't happy- it's more of to shut my thoughts and feelings. I stopped any alcohol ever since 22, not even during my and others' wedding. I feel healthy and happy now.

Yes! Since vaping doesn't have the pungent smell, it becomes more dangerous as people unknowingly vape more and second hand vapers(?) won't even know they are inhaling the harmful substances or try to avoid it :( that's bad for everyone as a whole...

Why didn't invite a pharmacist to explain about nicotine replacement therapy (nrt) 😆 From what I know, there are patches, gums and lozenges. Compared to vapes, there are no other chemicals for nrt. these only have nicotine content and are controlled amount of nicotine so that you can adjust (usually reduce over time) so that you can use it to replace the nicotine in cigarettes and reduce the qty (thereby reducing the amt of nicotine consumption) over time to wean off.

I don’t drink alcohol at all, but as someone who never drinks or drank alcohol, I am convinced the entire world of drinkers are at least mildly suffering from alcoholism and addiction. And yes, vaping is very bad for you. I understand many people switched from cigarettes to vaping over the years, because it was marketed as healthier (both are detrimental to your health). But what I don’t understand is someone vaping who doesn’t or has never smoked cigarettes. It’s baffling the recreational activities people take up, but I do suspect a lot of it is to do with peer pressure, and even colleague/work pressure with endless alcohol inclusive events. Can the world try to be more original for once?

If we honestly ask about the why, we can’t ignore the societal root of why people run to smoking/vaping/drinking. We are born into a rat race from schooling till work. In highly competitive and overworked societies like Japan, smoking and alcoholism is far more rampant. We can continue the cycle of blaming vices every generation, but as long as Singapore continues with the rat race culture, the underlying stressors that push people to unhealthy coping styles will always be around.

Alcohol addiction is real. I had this one year period of time where I go pub to drink for 5-6 days a week. Every freaking week. Until I realized I can actually save alot from not drinking. Then it has now become a social thingy where I can control myself whether I wanna drink or not. To those alcoholic out there, you can actually do it, believe in yourself.

I enjoy a drink or 2 every wkend (usually red/white wine depending on dinner menu) & public holidays, however, my hb seems to think it might be an addiction. I actually got worried & checked w medical professionals & based on that 125ml/wkend evening amt, I am actually in the clear for alcohol addiction. I also had a laparoscopic knee surgery recently & had to go wo my wkend celebration drinks. I was just wondering if I cld make it thru but my painkiller meds prevented me fr consuming any for tt wkend. Tt experience made me realize tt I was not an addict bcos I still had control over whether I wanted a drink or not & I cld stop at will. Stay healthy, everyone! Like JonPaul said, he cld hv easily afforded a car if he hadn’t splurged on alcohol & smoking all those yrs. HEALTH IS WEALTH!:) One cn always enjoy a drink or two BUT one shd ALWAYS CHOOSE HEALTH over addiction!❤ Btw, I hv tried 0.0% Heinekan beer & it’s actually not bad! I do wish tt they wld drop pxs on 0% alcohol drinks so tt those who r addicted cld more easily opt for the 0% alternative. Taste test PASSED! 👍🤗🙏

I'd been smoking more than 30 years and I'm able to quit it during the Covid-period. Smoking is about mindset and habit. If you have a strong will in quitting, you're sure to accomplish with that mindset. Vaping is worst than smoking, vaping cause all those vapors into your brain and what does all those vapors doesn't exit the valves in your body?

I feel vape is less harmful than conventional cigarette, but also when people vape they tend to take more puffs or more frequent puffs as compared to say a few sticks of cigarettes per day. So at the end the nicotine intake would be much much more than conventional cigarette. Also, been a smoker for on and off for close to 13 years before transitioning to e-cig for a few years. Finally quit for good after getting a heart attack, was a good wake up call. :|

It tastes good and pairs well with many dishes unlike other beverages with overly strong or sweet flavors that don't match with foods. The fermentation brings out flavors that can suit unique flavors. Beer, spirits and wine have been drank for centuries and the people that produce it put in a lot of effort to make a nice drink that people enjoy. They don't sell alcohol to get people drunk they sell beverages/ drinks for people to enjoy

Why vape is much more rampant than conventional cigarettes is because of convenience. Smoking a cigarette is actually very inconvenient. You have to smoke in an open air area due to the smoke and smell, you have to find a smoking corner, you have to puff until you finish the cigarette, you have to bring a lighter, smell from cigarettes linger on your body/fingers etc etc Whereas for vape, you can take a puff any where/ any time. Smells more pleasant, smell does not linger etc etc. Humans are lazy creatures, anything that is more convenient will always be chosen.

I think vaping vs smoking and sugared drinks vs sugar free drinks have the same issues. I rather choose sugar and drink it in moderation than drinking artificial sweeteners that are not well researched. Vaping is probably a lot worse. You have no idea what it does to you.
