Why do you think that it's unfair? After all it's just a perception/an opinion. I for example find him to be unfunny. I can't laugh at his jokes. At all. But compared to other comedians I also find to be unfunny I feel like his jokes aren't even executed that well. It feels like he doesn't put as much thought into it because the jokes aren't clever at all. No wordplay. No story with an awesome twist. Pretty shallow. The only point he has going for him in my opinion is that when working with the crowd he's able to think and react really fast which is impressive. But that doesn't make him funnier and what he says reflects how much time he had to come up with a response. This isn't supposed to be a diss. I just wanted to explain why I think it's absolutely fair to call him unfunny

He's... different. Obviously he's popular with women and his shows sell out in days because of them because of his looks, its just another example of "pretty privilege". That said when he found his confidence on Wild 'n Out I thought he was pretty good. His material isn't for me generally speaking but his crowd work is pretty good and there's some great clips of him floating around where he's dropping truth bombs on people that a more traditional comic wouldn't get away with. Places like Tik Tok have also played a big part in turning him into almost a celebrity first and a comic second but hey, good for him, I'm sure he's brightening a lot of people's days and that's a good thing!

Calling him the Dane Cook of this generation is a slap in the face to Dance Cook. Dane actually has talent. When you watch his act you can see that the jokes are well crafted. Matt Rife is definitely funny but to act as if his looks aren't a huge part of his success is cope. When your audience is 90 percent female and they are telling him to take his belt off, getting tattoos in their mouth, and baking him cookies you realize there is something else going on here. He definitely put in the work, but there are comedies with equal talent and crowd work skills that get 1/100 the attention he does. By the way, this is not Matt's fault at all. Again, it looks like he really did put in the work but his success would have you believe he's the next Chris Rock or something. He appeals to a lot of people who casually watch comedy because they're looking for the girls-night-out experience or don't want to admit that he's not a legend out of fear of looking jealous.

I think your criticism is fair in that it sets out to prove Matt doesn't belong in comedy, but that is a stupid statement. However, I think you're downplaying some of the facts. I think calling him unfunny is short sighted, idk about his normal standup but clearly, if nothing else, he's at least fast with crowd work. i think a lot of people underestimate how difficult crowd work can be, its inherently unstable since u don't know what you're getting into. i probably wouldn't say he's FUNNY, he's just, somewhere between, and he can work a crowd. which DOES have its own audience, and clearly he's serving it well.
